WASHINGTON (AP) — The Philadelphia Flyers tied an NHL record with Mike McKenna becoming their seventh goaltender to play this season.
McKenna started against the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals on Tuesday night and allowed four goals on 25 shots in a 5-3 loss . He got the nod because interim coach Scott Gordon wanted to give top goaltending prospect Carter Hart a break after playing twice in three days.
On a busy day for goaltenders on the NHL waiver wire, the Carolina Hurricanes put Scott Darling on waivers and the Arizona Coyotes claimed Calvin Pickard from the Philadelphia Flyers.
Darling went on waivers Thursday with two years left on his contract beyond this season at a salary-cap hit of $4.15 million. Darling became Carolina's third goaltender behind Petr Mrazek and Curtis McIlhenney, who the Hurricanes claimed from the Maple Leafs before the season began.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Jeff Skinner scored 3:06 into overtime after getting the tying goal late in regulation, and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 on Friday for their eighth straight victory.
Buffalo's win streak is the longest in the NHL and the team's best stretch since winning 10 in a row to start the 2006-07 season. Casey Mittelstadt also scored for the Sabres, and Carter Hutton made 31 saves.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Jakub Voracek rebounded quickly from an embarrassing loss.
Voracek had two goals and three assists and Scott Laughton also scored twice in Philadelphia's 7-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators in Wednesday, a night after an 8-2 loss to San Jose in the Flyers' home opener.
"It was a tough start at home for us, but we scored seven and I think we played a pretty good hockey game," Voracek said. "We just have to take it to the home ice now."
Toronto Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock was very much the diplomat after goalies Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard were claimed off waivers Tuesday.

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov will undergo season-ending hip surgery in an effort to fix a lingering groin issue.
He will have the procedure Thursday in Vail, Colorado.
The 28-year-old Varlamov has been dealing with a nagging groin injury since December. He has a 6-17 record with a 3.38 goals-against average over 24 games this season for the last-place Avalanche.

DENVER (AP) — The Calgary Flames had trouble scoring on Colorado goalie Calvin Pickard, so they started using his teammates to beat him.
Once they started rolling, the Flames cruised to an easy win.
Mikael Backlund scored two of Calgary's four goals in the second period and also had an assist, and the Flames beat the Avalanche 6-3 on Tuesday night.
