Spanish officials say the bodies of seven migrants have been found close to the Canary Islands.
Civil Guard police said five dead migrants were found in a large rubber boat close to the coast of Lanzarote. Another two migrants retrieved from the sea by Civil Guard police died later.
Police later found 18 migrants who had made it to shore. Two others were rescued from the sea, one in critical condition.
22 hurt when night club floor collapses on Spanish island
MADRID (AP) — Spanish authorities say that 22 people were hurt on the island of Tenerife when the floor of a night club collapsed and sent the revelers plunging into the basement.
Emergency services for the Canary Islands say that the people fell "about one story" into the basement early Sunday after a hole of approximately four square meters (43 square foot) opened in the floor.
Emergency services say that two of those hurt suffered serious injuries including broken legs and ankles.
Gerda Martel, who witnessed rise of Nazis, dies at 101
Gerda Martel escaped from Nazi Germany as it intensified its persecution of the Jewish people, settling in the United States and later living for two decades in Spains Canary Islands.
Martel died Nov. 14 in Minneapolis, where shed spent the past 12 years. She was 101.
She was born in Berlin, the daughter of Karl Freund, a prominent cinematographer, whose works included Metropolis, a landmark 1927 German science fiction film. Freund and Gerdas mother, Susette, divorced when she was just 2.

MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid says Spain forward Victor "Vitolo" Machin has agreed to join the club when its ban on new players ends in January.
Until then, Atletico says Vitolo will leave current club Sevilla and play the first half of the upcoming season at his boyhood club in the Canary Islands, Las Palmas.
The unorthodox agreement is Atletico's way of getting around the FIFA-imposed ban from registering new players until 2018 for having broken rules regarding the transfer of underage players.

Marquez, who has never coached a top-flight side, was in charge of Las Palmas' reserve team last season, helping it earn promotion to Spain's third-tier competition.

MADRID (AP) — A court in Spain's Canary Islands has sent a 27-year-old German man to prison for 3½ years for causing a massive forest fire that killed one worker last summer.
The man already admitted, when he was detained in July last year, that he accidentally started the blaze by burning his soiled toilet paper. Civil guard agents had found him near the source of the fire in the Atlantic Ocean island of La Palma.
MADRID (AP) — A large ferry slammed bow-first into a breakwater in the Canary Islands, injuring 13 passengers, Spanish authorities said Saturday.
Manolo Vidal, a spokesman for Naviera Armas, the company that owns the ferry, said a "loss of electrical power" caused the accident Friday night as the boat was leaving the port of Puerta de la Luz on the island of Gran Canaria.
Emergency services said five of the injured had to be hospitalized.

British sprinters in a Tenerife hospital after road accident
LONDON (AP) — The British track and field federation says sprinters James Ellington and Nigel Levine have been hospitalized after being involved in a road accident on the Canary Islands.
British Athletics says the pair is "receiving medical treatment and are conscious and stable."
Ellington and Levine are accompanied by medical staff from British Athletics, who are liaising with the hospital over the treatment. They were taking part in warm-weather training in Tenerife.

MADRID (AP) — Spain's Interior Ministry says police have arrested a Moroccan suspected of praising terrorism by promoting armed Islamic groups on the internet.
A ministry statement said the man arrested Tuesday on the Canary Islands' city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria used a popular social media network to spread propaganda for the teachings and armed actions of extremist groups such as Syria's Fatah al-Sham Front, which is considered linked to al-Qaida.

Man arrested after running onto Madrid tarmac to catch plane
MADRID (AP) — Spanish police have arrested a man who they say ran onto the tarmac at Madrid's Barajas airport to catch a Ryanair flight to the Canary Islands after he somehow missed boarding.
A spokesman for the AENA airport authority said the man was arrested on arrival in the Canary Islands Friday.
The spokesman said the man passed through security to the boarding area with a ticket for the flight but somehow missed the opportunity to board properly.

Forest fire started by lit toilet paper spreads in Spain
MADRID (AP) — Spanish authorities say that a forest fire started by a German man burning his soiled toilet paper continues to spread on La Palma in the Canary Islands.
Spain's acting minister of agriculture and the environment, Isabel Garcia Tejerina, told COPE radio that the four-day-old blaze has consumed between 3,500-4,000 hectares of forest, up from the 2,000 hectares terrain destroyed through Friday.
