CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Monticello man has been sentenced to prison for robbing an eastern Iowa bank on his birthday.
Federal prosecutors say 46-year-old Joseph Kripner was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids to five years in federal prison. He had pleaded guilty in August to one count of bank robbery.
Landlords file suit against Iowa officer for false arrest
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Two Iowa landlords who say they were falsely accused of stealing a tenant's washer and dryer are suing a detective and prosecutor they blame for unfairly arresting and charging them.
The Linn County attorney's office dropped felony theft charges against the men last year after neighbors testified that they did not witness any such crime as the detective claimed in his police report.

Man acquitted of punching 2-year-old girl to death
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A jury has acquitted a 31-year-old man accused of punching to death a 2-year-old girl in Iowa County.
Court records say Cody Stevenson was found not guilty Monday of first-degree murder.
A criminal complaint said Stevenson struck the daughter of his live-in girlfriend three or four times in the abdomen on June 30, 2017, at a Williamsburg apartment. Authorities say the girl died three days later.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Dubuque woman tied to two drug overdose deaths has been imprisoned.
Federal court records say 25-year-old Brianna Martin was sentenced last week to 27 months. She'd pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids to distribution of heroin. She must serve three years of supervised release after she leaves prison and pay $12,500 in restitution.

Iowa to see dangerously cold conditions overnight
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for much of eastern Iowa, including Davenport, Iowa City, Dubuque and Cedar Rapids.
The service says dangerously cold weather is expected Thursday night into midday Friday, with wind chills dropping to as low as 35-below (-37.22 Celsius) in some areas. Wind gusts of 40 mph are also expected.
Under those conditions, frostbite can occur within minutes.
Suspect may be linked to several sex assaults near U. Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Investigators say they have arrested a 32-year-old Iowa man who is believed to be linked to several sexual assaults near the University of Iowa campus.
Carlos Hivento of Cedar Rapids was arrested last week and charged in the November sexual assault of a 19-year-old girl he allegedly met at an Iowa City bar. He's being jailed pending trial.

MILLERSBURG, Iowa (AP) — Eastern Iowa authorities say a man has died in a house fire.
Cedar Rapids television station KCRG reports the fire happened Tuesday morning in Millersburg. Firefighters were called to the house just before 6 a.m.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Prosecutors say thousands of individuals and businesses were victims of a large-scale scheme in which ordinary corn and soybeans were fraudulently marketed nationwide as "certified organic."

Sixty-one-year-old Randy Constant of Chillicothe, Missouri, pleaded guilty to wire fraud Thursday under a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in Cedar Rapids.
Constant faces a potential prison sentence of 12 years or more, but that could be reduced at sentencing due to his ongoing cooperation.
Woman gets 7 years for stealing from dead fiance, his mother
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa woman has been given seven years in prison for stealing more than $192,000 from her now-dead fiance and his elderly mother.

Police announced the arrest Wednesday night in the Dec. 19, 1979, stabbing death of 18-year-old Michelle Martinko.
Police arrested 64-year-old Jerry Lynn Burns on Wednesday morning in Manchester and charged him with first-degree murder. He's being held in the Linn County jail in Cedar Rapids and will appear in district court Thursday morning.

A Cedar Rapids news release says 43-year-old Sharon Garnett died Saturday afternoon at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
Firefighters sent to battle the blaze Friday afternoon had found Garnett in her bedroom. Authorities say a medical condition made it difficult for Garnett to escape.
