Von Miller switches tactics, buttering up Chiefs
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — No promises from Von Miller to kick butt this week. Just some buttering up instead.
And a lightening up of the mood prior to addressing the Halloween party he hosted that became the talk of the town over some curious costumes and backup quarterback Chad Kelly's trespassing arrest following the annual team-bonding get-together.
Broncos’ new backup QB is former Stanford star
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — If anything happens to Case Keenum, the Denver Broncos' offense would be in the hands of Kevin Hogan, who rose up the depth chart when Chad Kelly slipped up.
A third-year pro, Hogan has one NFL start on a resume that includes more wins (36) and total yardage (10,634) in college than any of the all-time great quarterbacks who played for Stanford, including his boss, John Elway.
Broncos cut Chad Kelly a day after trespassing arrest
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Chad Kelly's short stint as the Denver Broncos' backup quarterback is over, and his former teammates and ex-coaches are trying to ignore the distraction of his dismissal while keeping him in their thoughts.
The Broncos waived the second-year pro Wednesday, a day after he was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass after being accused of entering a couple's suburban home uninvited.
Broncos backup QB Chad Kelly arrested in trespassing case
DENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos backup quarterback Chad Kelly was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of criminal trespass after a couple reported he came into their suburban house uninvited and sat down on their couch "mumbling incoherently," according to court records.
General manager John Elway said the team was "very, very disappointed in Chad and the situation he put himself into" and suggested the Broncos were pondering Kelly's future with the club.
Broncos keep Lynch but jettison several recent draft picks
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The former first-rounder survived cutdown day, making the Denver Broncos' roster Saturday despite slipping to third on the depth chart this summer behind primary backup quarterback Chad Kelly, last year's "Mr. Irrelevant."
"With Chad not having a lot of experience and not having played in a regular season game before, we thought we had to go with three quarterbacks," Elway said.
Lynch has big 2nd half, Broncos beat Cardinals 21-10
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — A near-perfect second half in the preseason finale didn't appear to be enough to give Paxton Lynch the No. 2 quarterback job in Denver.
Lynch completed 14 of 15 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns and was not intercepted, leading the Broncos to a 21-10 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night.
Big decisions looming for John Elway on Broncos QBs
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Chad Kelly has a tenuous hold on the No. 2 quarterback job in Denver, and not because Paxton Lynch is making a push to regain the gig he lost to him this summer.
Kelly gets one more shot at showing he's a worthy backup to starter Case Keenum when he starts the Broncos' final preseason game Thursday night at Arizona.
Paxton Lynch has gone from 1st-rounder to roster bubble
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos coach Vance Joseph said former first-round pick Paxton Lynch was "obviously motivated" by his demotion to third-string quarterback last week "and that's a good sign. He's upset and he should be upset."
Lynch might not have enough time to channel that frustration and salvage a roster spot.
Chad Kelly of Ole Miss, "Mr. Irrelevant" as the final pick of the 2017 draft, has outworked and outplayed Lynch all summer and in both of Denver's exhibition games.
Keenum rebounds but Bears beat Broncos 24-23
DENVER (AP) — Chicago quarterback Mitch Trubisky and Denver QB Case Keenum feel better about their respective offenses after starting out faster and finally moving the chains Saturday night.
"Scoring points always feels better," said Keenum, who led two scoring drives in three possessions one week after his dud of a Denver debut.
Trubisky also bounced back from a dismal debut last week by connecting with Trey Burton for his first score of the summer.
John Elway says he might still seek a veteran backup QB
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos might not be done shuffling backup quarterbacks.
General manager John Elway said Tuesday that he might still sign a veteran to back up starting QB Case Keenum if he doesn't feel Chad Kelly can win games in a pinch.
"I'm not going to tell you we're definitely going to stand pat, but I'm not telling you we're going (in) that direction, either," Elway told 103.5 The Fox radio station in Denver.
Paxton Lynch demoted, Chad Kelly promoted in Denver
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Paxton Lynch inched closer to full-blown bust status Monday when he was demoted to third string after Chad Kelly's solid debut in the Denver Broncos' exhibition opener.
"Chad's played well. He played well in the scrimmage. He played well Saturday night. So he deserves the chance to be the 2 right now," coach Vance Joseph said.
Lynch was disappointed, Joseph said, "but he understands that it's a performance business."
Kelly outshines Lynch in Broncos scrimmage
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Chad Kelly outshined Paxton Lynch in the Denver Broncos' scrimmage Sunday, and that might have earned him work with the No. 2 offense in his quest to win the backup job behind Case Keenum.
"Yeah, he looked good," coach Vance Joseph said after watching Kelly throw two touchdown passes in a five-play span following Lynch's erratic performance that included a sack and a near interception.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — John Elway has changed his mind about adding another quarterback to the Denver Broncos' roster.
The Broncos signed undrafted free agent Nick Stevens of Colorado State on Thursday, three weeks after Elway said he wouldn't bring in a fourth passer for offseason workouts.
After bypassing QBs in the NFL draft last month, notably Josh Allen and Josh Rosen with the fifth overall pick, Elway said he was satisfied with the group he had.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Not even the signing of free agent Case Keenum could keep the Broncos from staging yet another quarterback competition this offseason.
Broncos coach sticking with Osweiler at QB
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Jake Butt won't be rescuing the Denver Broncos' faltering offense, at least not this season.
The rookie tight end is headed to injured reserve along with quarterback Chad Kelly, the seventh-round draft pick from Mississippi who is still working his way back from knee and wrist surgeries.
Broncos add a bunch of tough guys in the draft
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — John Elway and Vance Joseph used free agency to target toughness in the trenches. In the draft, Denver's new duo zeroed in on prospects with an attitude.
"You want guys who love to play and hate to lose," Joseph said. "These eight guys we picked this weekend all fit into that category: They love to win, they hate to lose and they're tough guys. But they're all good kids, so we're excited about that.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The final day of the NFL draft began with an impromptu rendition of "Fly Eagles Fly" by former Philadelphia star safety Brian Dawkins and ended with a player who was far from irrelevant in college being picked last.
Mississippi quarterback Chad Kelly, a talented player with a history of off-the-field issues and injuries, was the 253rd and final selection Saturday by the Denver Broncos.
The Latest: SEC’s 53 draft picks lead all conferences
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Latest on the NFL draft (all times Eastern):
The SEC led all conferences in number of draft picks for the 11th straight year.
The Southeastern Conference had 53 players selected. The run started with Texas A&M's Myles Garrett going No. 1 overall and ended with Mississippi's Chad Kelly going last, at No. 253, as "Mr. Irrelevant."
Former Mississippi quarterback Chad Kelly has had surgery on his right wrist just weeks before the NFL draft and won't be able to throw for the next three months.
Kelly's agent, Vance McAllister, said Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida, performed the surgery Monday to repair a ruptured ligament. McAllister said the surgery went well and Kelly is expected to be ready for training camp,
Ole Miss sophomore QB Patterson takes over offense
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Shea Patterson had a three-game, crash course as Mississippi's quarterback in November after senior starter Chad Kelly went down with a knee injury.
Now, the Rebels belong to him.
Ready or not, the 6-foot-2, 203-pound sophomore is the new face of the Ole Miss football program. The former five-star recruit was the main attraction during Saturday's intrasquad spring game and for the most part delivered, completing 21 of 30 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns.
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Quarterback Chad Kelly's workout at Mississippi's pro day ended prematurely because of a wrist injury.
Kelly threw about a dozen passes at the Rebels' indoor practice facility before leaving with what he said was a sprain. He said he first hurt the wrist on his throwing arm last week and aggravated the injury Monday.
AP Source: NFL bars Kelly from combine due to past troubles
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Mississippi quarterback Chad Kelly's past troubles are the reasons the NFL revoked his invitation to the league's scouting combine.
A person familiar with the league's decision told The Associated Press that Kelly is barred from participating in the event because of charges stemming from a fight outside a Buffalo nightclub and for being dismissed by Clemson. Both incidents happened in 2014.
Mississippi trying to become bowl eligible in visit to Vandy
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason thought it was fun watching Mississippi freshman Shea Patterson in his college debut last week. Defending against the quarterback who just led a big fourth-quarter rally to upset then-No. 8 Texas A&M brings out an entirely different emotion.
Patterson wows in debut, Ole Miss rallies to beat A&M 29-28
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — When Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze saw Shea Patterson win a state championship as a high school junior he walked away with a "man crush" on the quarterback.
Safe to say he's still crushing on Patterson after his performance Saturday night.
Patterson threw for 338 yards and two touchdowns in his debut and Gary Wunderlich made a 39-yard field goal with 37 seconds left to lift Mississippi past No. 10 Texas A&M, 29-28 on Saturday night.
Texas A&M and Ole Miss both look to backup QBs this week
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Both No. 10 Texas A&M and Mississippi will start backup quarterbacks on Saturday when they meet after Aggies starter Trevor Knight and Rebels starter Chad Kelly both suffered serious injuries last week.
With Kelly out, Mississippi tries to decide on new QB
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — The college career of Mississippi quarterback Chad Kelly is over at least a month before anyone expected.
With Kelly out, Rebels' coach Hugh Freeze faces a tough dilemma in deciding who should replace him: backup Jason Pellerin or prized recruit Shea Patterson.
The 7-2 Nebraska football team has slipped from ninth to 21st in the AP Top 25 and fall from tenth to 20th in the coaches’ poll. They dropped a road game at sixth ranked Ohio State last Saturday 62-3. Alabama, Michigan, Clemson, Washington, and Louisville round out the top five in the AP Poll. The Huskers, who are outscoring their opponents on average 28.8-23.2, return to action this Saturday when they host Minnesota on Saturday at 6:30 on BTN.
Mississippi QB Chad Kelly tears ACL, out for season

The 6-foot-2 senior was hurt Saturday in the Rebels' victory over Georgia Southern. The school announced the injury following Kelly's MRI on Sunday, and said he would have surgery this week.
Kelly leads Ole Miss to 37-27 win over Georgia Southern

Arkansas in pursuit of its 3rd straight win over Ole Miss
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas quarterback Austin Allen wasn't even watching Hunter Henry's heave that led to a fourth-and-25 conversion — and eventual win — against Mississippi a year ago.
Razorbacks coach Bret Bielema saw the desperate lateral, which eventually led to the 53-52 overtime win over the Rebels , but he'd prefer something less dramatic this time around.
