Pirates P Chad Kuhl has elbow surgery, out for 2019
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Chad Kuhl underwent reconstructive surgery on his right elbow and will miss the entire 2019 season.
The team says Kuhl had the surgery Wednesday in New York. Kuhl went 5-5 with a 4.55 ERA in 16 starts for Pittsburgh this season. The Pirates initially placed him on the disabled list because of right forearm soreness following a loss to the New York Mets on June 26.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Chad Kuhl was just happy his team got the win. His manager was thrilled that his right-hander got the credit for it.
Kuhl pitched six solid innings to win for the first time since May 6, a span of seven starts, and the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Cincinnati Reds and Matt Harvey 3-2 on Friday night.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers bring out the best in Chad Kuhl.
Kuhl and Richard Rodriguez combined on a two-hitter, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Brewers 9-0 on Sunday.
Kuhl is 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA in six starts against the Brewers, and the Pirates are unbeaten in those games.
"There were a few games last year that really stand out," Kuhl said. "This is up there, just for the amount of weak contact and all that. It was one of my better ones, for sure."
Moved to leadoff, Harper hits 3-run homer as Nats win 12-4
WASHINGTON (AP) — Moved to the leadoff spot for the first time since 2013, Bryce Harper showed signs of breaking out of his slump.
Harper hit a three-run homer that helped Max Scherzer win his fifth straight start as the Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-4 Wednesday night.
"Seriously, I thought I missed that ball," Harper said. "I thought I got the popup down the line more than I did the homer, but it went over the fence, so I'll take it."

For a few agonizing moments, he would have preferred the electric bolt.

Pirates come to contract terms with 31 pre-arbitration players
The Pirates finalized contract terms Saturday for all 31 of their players who have fewer than three years of service and are not eligible for arbitration.
The list includes several of the more prominent members of the team, including:
• First baseman Josh Bell, who hit 26 home runs last season.
• Pitcher Steven Brault, who is in the middle of a battle for a spot in the starting rotation.
• Jameson Taillon, who will start the home opener April 2.

The ball caromed off the inside of Kuhl's right leg near his knee, and he collapsed in pain as Gordon reached on a single. Kuhl was examined by a trainer, rose and threw several warmup pitches but then left the game, walking to the dugout accompanied by manager Clint Hurdle.

The teams will make up the game on April 13 at Fenway Park.
Lefty Eduardo Rodriguez had been scheduled to face Pirates right-hander Chad Kuhl.
The Red Sox won the first two games of the series, including a 3-0 win in 12 innings on Wednesday night.
