The union's House of Delegates voted Wednesday for Jesse Sharkey to take over the position held for many years by Karen Lewis. Sharkey was the CTU's vice president. He has been leading the union while Lewis has battled brain cancer.
Stacy Davis Gates, the union's political director, was chosen to serve as vice president.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Teachers Union president Karen Lewis says she is stepping down because her battle with brain cancer has made it impossible to do her job "at my best."
Lewis said Friday that she's submitted her retirement papers to the Chicago Board of Education.
Lewis was diagnosed with brain cancer four years ago, has undergone chemotherapy, suffered a stroke, and underwent brain surgery recently.

CHICAGO (AP) — A Republican lawmaker trying to unseat Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is standing by a campaign ad that has been blasted as racist and homophobic, despite the state party chairman's call for her to stop airing it and apologize.
State Rep. Jeanne Ives, a social and fiscal conservative, said the ad that began airing this weekend illustrates the GOP governor's "chosen constituents based on the policy choices he made" and primary voters need to know about his record.
Teachers union suffers stroke, says she is OK
CHICAGO (AP) — The president of the Chicago Teachers Union is hospitalized after suffering a stroke in the area of the brain where a tumor was removed in October 2014.
Karen Lewis says she suffered the stroke last week, adding that she is going to be OK. She is calling the episode a "minor setback" in her recovery from a malignant brain tumor.
The 64-year-old Lewis said Tuesday she will need rehabilitation treatments to strengthen her weakened left side, and hoped to start therapy soon.
CHICAGO (AP) — Members of the Chicago Alliance of Charter Teachers and Staff, the union representing teachers at city's charter schools, have voted to join the Chicago Teachers Union.
ChiACTS officials announced Friday that 671 of its members voted to consolidate with the CTU, while 130 members opposed the merger.
Members of the CTU are expected to vote in the fall whether to go through with consolidation of the unions.
Chicago Public Schools mandate 4 furlough days for staff
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Public Schools has mandated four unpaid furlough days this school year for its teachers and staff.
In a letter sent Friday to district employees, CPS CEO Forrest Claypool blamed Gov. Bruce Rauner's veto of a measure providing $215 million in state aid to the district for the action.
However, The Chicago Teachers Union says the district's action is the latest consequence of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's and Claypool's failure to pursue "progressive revenue for our schools."
Teacher absences worse in Chicago’s poorest schools
CHICAGO (AP) — A published report says one in four Chicago Public Schools teachers missed more than 10 days of school a year.
The Chicago Sun-Times (http://bit.ly/2fmK6Pr ) based its analysis on 2013-2014 data from the Illinois State Board of Education. The state board has started reporting teacher absences on the annual school report cards it puts out in the fall.
The numbers include teachers taking maternity leave and other short-term disability leaves, as well as regular sick days.
