A nine-year veteran, Gimenez played for Chicago manager Joe Maddon when both were with Tampa Bay in 2012 and 2013 and was later a teammate of free agent pitcher Yu Darvish — a Cubs target — with the Texas Rangers.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs are having active talks with free agent Yu Darvish, hoping to add the right-hander to their rotation as they try for a second championship in three seasons.
The 31-year-old Darvish is one of the top players available in a slow-moving market this winter. He finished last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping them reach the World Series.
Dozier repeats as Twins MVP, leadership award winner
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Brian Dozier has been named MVP of the Minnesota Twins for the second straight season.
The Twins announced their 2017 awards Tuesday, as voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America's Twin Cities chapter. The winners will be honored Jan. 18 at the Diamond Awards, the fundraiser for brain, muscle and nerve disease care and research at the University of Minnesota.
Brian Dozier, for the second consecutive season, has been named the Twins most valuable player.
The veteran second baseman, who led the team with 34 home runs and 93 RBI, won the Calvin R. Griffith Award as team MVP in voting by the Twin Cities chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
Dozier also was a repeat winner of the Bob Allison Award for determination and leadership on and off the field.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — After going deep twice in a game for the first time in his big league career, Chris Gimenez still has more mop-up relief appearances this season than home runs.
Wait, maybe the Minnesota Twins have this whole thing backward with their backup catcher.
"Hopefully I'm one of the better hitting pitchers in the league," Gimenez said with a wide smile, after his pair of drives on Thursday spurred the Twins to a 6-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have recalled right-hander Ryan Pressly from Triple-A Rochester, the latest change in their chewed-up bullpen.
Pressly was promoted before Tuesday night's game against Seattle to take the place of right-hander Alex Wimmers, who was sent down Monday following a rough appearance during a 14-3 defeat by the Mariners.
The Seattle Mariners scored seven runs in the fourth inning in Tuesday’s 12-3 win over the Minnesota Twins.
Danny Valencia hit a three-run double and later in the frame, Kyle Seager cranked a three-run home run.
The M’s went on to generate 12 hits and 12 runs against five pitchers. The most efficient “pitcher” the Twins sent up was catcher Chris Gimenez, who pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, the fourth time he’s been asked to mop up for the bullpen this season.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Adalberto Mejia made the most of his brief stint back in the majors with the Minnesota Twins by getting his first big-league win.
