USC can’t allow Love to mimic McCaffrey in Pac-12 title game
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California safety Chris Hawkins still remembers what Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey did in the 2015 Pac-12 championship game.
"We almost handed one person the Heisman Trophy that day," Hawkins said. "They probably should have gave it to him that day after the game."
The No. 11 Trojans can't allow a repeat performance to the No. 14 Cardinal and their latest Heisman candidate, Bryce Love, on Friday.
USC’s defense dealt another blow before facing Notre Dame
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California knows what it has to do to win at No. 13 Notre Dame, but another injury will make the task that much harder.
"I think our offense is going to do what they do," safety Chris Hawkins said. "I think it's up to us to stop the run."
No. 14 USC feels disrespected, still seeking to dominate
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California safety Chris Hawkins wanted to see how a loss at home to an unranked opponent would compare to a road loss to a ranked opponent on a short week in the eyes of pollsters.
Darnold, No. 14 USC down Oregon State 38-10
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cornerback Iman Marshall and linebacker Uchenna Nwosu were two of the last Southern California players to reach the locker room after helping push the hydration cart back into the locker room, an apt conclusion to a perfectly workmanlike win.
Sam Darnold threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns, Ronald Jones II ran for a score and the No. 14 Trojans beat Oregon State 38-10 on Saturday.
No. 5 USC planning for more balanced Washington State
LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Southern California last faced Washington State in 2014, safety Chris Hawkins remembers preparing for an offense ready, willing and able to throw the ball on nearly every play.
The No. 16 Cougars are still capable of airing it out, but the fifth-ranked Trojans expect to face a slightly more balanced version of the Air Raid approach on Friday night.
No. 5 USC pulls away late for 30-20 win over California
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — With Sam Darnold and Southern California's usually potent offense struggling to finish drives, the defense kept getting the ball in good positions for the Trojans.
Fifth-ranked USC forced four of its six turnovers in the fourth quarter to set up a touchdown run by Stephen Carr and a TD pass by Darnold, and the Trojans won their 13th straight game by pulling away late for a 30-20 victory over California on Saturday.
No. 6 USC routs No. 14 Stanford 42-24 for 11th straight win
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California ran the ball straight at Stanford in the opening series, and the Trojans never stopped. USC's defense dominated up front and largely stifled the Cardinal's vaunted running game.
The recent roles in this California private-school rivalry were completely flipped Saturday night, and the surging Trojans embraced the chance to be the victorious bullies.
"We beat them at their own game," USC safety Chris Hawkins said.
USC needs to improve run defense before facing Stanford
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Western Michigan was a mystery to No. 4 Southern California, forcing coaches and players to watch three sets of film to prepare for a new head coach and offensive coordinator.
There will be no such illusions when No. 14 Stanford comes to the Coliseum on Saturday.
"I've been playing Stanford for going on four years now," safety Chris Hawkins said. "I know what they are going to come do. We all know what they are going to do. They are going to run the football."
With Smith suspended, USC readies first-time starters at LB
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cam Smith has been dreaming his whole life of being a team captain at Southern California. However, the junior linebacker will have to wait one more week before overseeing the opening coin toss.
Smith will miss the first half of the No. 4 Trojans' season opener against Western Michigan on Saturday after being ejected for targeting in the third quarter of the Rose Bowl.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Oscar Robertson, Jamal Harris - two names that will forever be synonymous with Crispus Attucks basketball.
Before Robertson was known as the "Big O" he was the centerpiece to Crispus Attucks' 1955 and 1956 state championship teams. And after this evening, Harris will forever be remembered for hitting the game-winning shot in the 2017 class 3A state title game that gave the Tigers their first state championship since 1959 - the last year the Tigers played for a state title.
USC players lean Alabama over Washington in Peach Bowl
LOS ANGELES (AP) — No one has a better perspective on the Peach Bowl between No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Washington than Southern California, having faced both teams this season.
And while the Trojans would love to see their Pac-12 rival advance to the national championship game, first-hand experience has them leaning toward picking the Crimson Tide.
Childhood friends become foes whenever No. 15 USC meets UCLA
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Although the five-county Los Angeles area is a sprawling metropolis of nearly 19 million people, the Southland can be a small town to its best young football players, who know all about each other from Pop Warner onward.
For those who stay close to home for college, UCLA's annual crosstown showdown with Southern California is a lively rivalry game with a unique edge. Almost everybody has friends across the line of scrimmage, which makes a victory even sweeter.
USC set to face balanced Washington offense
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast's biggest strength is taking away the opposing offense's biggest strength.
However, there is no obvious strength to attack this week against No. 4 Washington. The Huskies' offense is as balanced as it gets, averaging 268.4 yards passing per game and 231 yards rushing.
"You just don't know," Trojans cornerback Adoree Jackson said Wednesday. "Either or, they are deadly."
Jones, Darnold power USC to 45-20 win over Oregon
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California coach Clay Helton was afraid his team might look past struggling Oregon toward next week's marquee matchup against College Football Playoff contender Washington.
Fortunately for Helton, there were no such issues as Ronald Jones tied a school single-game record with four rushing touchdowns and the Trojans demolished Oregon 45-20 on Saturday.
"Now y'all can ask all the UDub questions you want," USC safety Chris Hawkins said.
USC ready to face area prep star Khalil Tate
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California didn't have to go far to find a scouting report on Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate, the freshman who could make his first career start Saturday.
Freshman defensive end Oluwole Betiku played with Tate in high school. As one of nine current Trojans who attended Serra in Gardena, the prep powerhouse that produced cornerback Adoree Jackson and other recent USC stars, Betiku wanted to prepare the defense for the mix of size and speed Tate had as a runner.
