Rays’ Faria sparkles against Tigers in final tuneup
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jake Faria couldn't think of a better way to finish what's been a mostly frustrating spring for the young Tampa Bay Rays right-hander.
The 24-year-old pitcher no-hit the Detroit Tigers for six innings on Tuesday, exiting his final tuneup for the regular season confident his performance is trending in the right direction.
Clearwater, Fla. — Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire has been champing at the bit to get a look at Tigers outfield prospect Christin Stewart. He and some of his coaches had lobbied for the slugger to get a big-league camp invite — to no avail.
So, when he saw Stewart's name on the list of minor leaguers invited to play Thursday against the Phillies, he jumped at it.
"When I saw he was coming over, I definitely made a spot for him," he said. "Just to see him."
Tampa, Fla. — This is one way to prove you belong.
Work your way into a couple of early Grapefruit League games. Lash a pair of singles. Draw a walk. Toss in a deep, opposite-field sacrifice fly to the warning track in left.
Should he keep this up once he arrives at Triple-A Toledo in a month, Christin Stewart will imply that maybe he should see Comerica Park in 2018, perhaps earlier than September, which is when the Tigers ideally want him in Detroit.
