‘Laverne’ role gave Marshall springboard to historic career
NEW YORK (AP) — Penny Marshall was typically self-effacing whenever her brother, the late filmmaker Garry Marshall, proudly boasted that his sister was the first female director to direct a $100 million box-office hit.
"They didn't give ME the money," Marshall joked in 2012 to The New Yorker.

NEW YORK (AP) — Penny Marshall, who indelibly starred in the top-rated sitcom "Laverne & Shirley" before becoming the trailblazing director of smash-hit big-screen comedies such as "Big" and "A League of Their Own," has died. She was 75.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Philip Johnson had been staying at the Second Chance Mission of Hope shelter in downtown Jacksonville for about a year before Hurricane Florence hit. During the storm he found himself with one other resident at the shelter, watching the basement slowly fill up with water.
After the storm passed, he said the director told him it was no longer safe to stay at the drowned and moldy location.
So on Saturday, he left and started living on the streets.
In the third grade things began to fall apart in public school for Autumn Williams.
“She was falling through the cracks,” her mother, Cindy Williams, said.
As a child on the autism spectrum with an attention deficit and hyperactive disorder, Autumn required a special focus from teachers. The school system suggested she be put into a self-contained special education class.

CARTERSVILLE — The Georgia Department of Transportation is focusing on two possible routes for the Rome-Cartersville Development Corridor.
The proposed U.S. 411 connector to Interstate 75 is still at least three to four years from the start of construction, according to GDOT spokesman Albert Shelby, who met with a group of Floyd and Bartow county leaders in Cartersville on Thursday.
“I was a little disappointed in the time frame,” said Floyd County Commission Chairman Larry Maxey.
Ron Howard set for ‘Odd Couple’ tribute to Garry Marshall
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ron Howard is among those set to guest star in a tribute to late TV sitcom king Garry Marshall in an episode of "The Odd Couple" next week.
Marshall died in July at 81. He developed the original "Odd Couple" TV series from the 1970s and acted in the current CBS version in an April episode, playing the father of Matthew Perry's character.
