MADRID (AP) — Real Betis defeated last-place Malaga 2-1 in the Spanish league on Monday to keep alive its hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
Betis' seventh win in eight matches left the team eight points behind third-place Valencia with three matches left. The result secured Betis a place in the Europa League for the first time in four years.
Levante wins to virtually escape relegation in Spain
MADRID (AP) — Levante defeated Sevilla 2-1 in the Spanish league on Friday, practically securing its spot in the first division next season.
Levante opened a 12-point gap to the first team inside the relegation zone, Clarence Seedorf's Deportivo La Coruna, which hosts leader Barcelona on Sunday.
There will be three matches left after this weekend's matches.
MADRID (AP) — With two free kick goals by the same player from nearly the same spot only two minutes apart, Levante came from behind to beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 and move a step closer to avoiding relegation in the Spanish league on Monday.
Macedonian midfielder Enis Bardhi scored from eerily similar free kicks in the 42nd and 44th minutes, and Jose Luis Morales capped Levante's victory in the final minutes after a superb run from his own half.

Deportivo was left six points from safety in 17th place of the 20-team league with four matches left. The bottom three teams go down.

MADRID (AP) — Clarence Seedorf's wait for a win at Deportivo La Coruna ended in his ninth match in charge Friday with a 3-2 victory over Malaga in a meeting of relegation-threatened teams.
Deportivo scored more goals on one night than it had done in the previous eight games under Seedorf, who was facing mounting pressure over his struggles.
Striker Adrian Lopez scored twice, including an 85th-minute winner, to move Deportivo five points from safety with seven games remaining in the Spanish league.
Deportivo coach Seedorf running out of time in Spain
MADRID (AP) — Clarence Seedorf is running out of time at Deportivo La Coruna.
The former Netherlands great took over the coaching job at Deportivo with the mission of keeping the traditional Spanish club from relegation. Eight matches later, Deportivo has yet to win.
Seedorf has another eight matches to turn things around, and his next chance comes this weekend when the bottom four clubs face each other.

Kevin Gameiro converted a first-half penalty kick as Atletico defeated Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 on Sunday to move within nine points of leader Barcelona with eight matches remaining.
Barcelona lost points in a 2-2 draw at Sevilla on Saturday when it needed two very late goals by Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi to remain the league's only unbeaten team this season.
Deportivo loses again, Seedorf’s struggles continue
MADRID (AP) — Deportivo La Coruna's poor run under coach Clarence Seedorf continued with a 2-0 loss at Girona in the Spanish league on Friday, extending the team's winless streak to six matches since the former Dutch midfielder took over.
It was the third win in a row for surprising Girona, which has impressed in its first-division debut. The Catalan club is in sixth place, in position to make it to the Europa League next season.
Ghanaian midfielder Muntari faces test at Deportivo
MADRID (AP) — Deportivo La Coruna says veteran Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari will start a trial period with the Spanish club from Friday.
The 33-year-old Muntari will be evaluated by new coach Clarence Seedorf.
Muntari played alongside Seedorf at AC Milan and was also coached by the Netherlands great when he took over Milan in 2014.

After two stints as a coach in Italy and China, Seedorf is taking over the helm of Deportivo La Coruna in the Spanish league, where his playing career took off with Real Madrid in the late 1990s.
