Offseason of change awaits Packers after another losing year
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Clay Matthews looked up into the Lambeau Field suites to find his parents before walking down the stadium tunnel for what might be the last time as a member of the Green Bay Packers.
An offseason of change awaits in Titletown following a second straight year without a playoff appearance.
A coaching search is already underway after Mike McCarthy was fired in early December, which leaves the futures of upcoming free agents like Matthews up in the air.
Packers’ Davante Adams questionable for Lions game
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Packers receiver Davante Adams is questionable for Green Bay's season finale against the Detroit Lions because of a knee injury.
Adams missed the first two days of practice this week, though he did say that he was optimistic that would be able to play. Adams needs to two catches and 134 yards receiving to set single-season franchise marks in each category.
Fired coach Mike McCarthy returns to speak to Packers
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Fired shortly after Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals, former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy didn't get a chance to say goodbye to the team he coached for most of the past 13 seasons.
On Wednesday, he got his chance. Interim coach Joe Philbin allowed McCarthy back into Lambeau Field to speak to the team, and the players bid him farewell with a standing ovation.
Packers place linebacker Nick Perry on injured reserve
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have placed Nick Perry on injured reserve with a knee injury, ending the veteran outside linebacker's season.
Rookie defensive end James Looney, a seventh-round pick out of California, was signed from the practice squad to take Perry's spot on the roster ahead of the road game Sunday night against the Minnesota Vikings.
Hobbled Packers defense looks to beef up takeaways
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — As the Packers look to end their road futility, coach Mike McCarthy would like to see another turn of events transpire when they play the rival Minnesota Vikings in prime time on Sunday.
"We definitely need turnovers," McCarthy said Friday. "That's always been a staple of our success here, and Sunday night will hopefully be that game."
Packers’ Clay Matthews weighs in after NFL clarifies QB hits
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — An NFL statement intended to clarify to officials the emphasis on quarterback hits may have raised questions with Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews.
NFL sticking with officiating emphasis on quarterback hits
NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL is sticking with its officiating emphasis on quarterback hits, including those in which the tackler uses all or most of his body weight when falling on the quarterback.

ICYMI in NFL Week 3: When is a sack legal? Hard to know now
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Sure does seem as if "When is a sack just a sack?" is quickly becoming the NFL's new "Did that player lower his helmet too much?" or "What, exactly, is a catch?"
It's a fundamental element of football — how a pass-rusher is allowed to bring a QB down to the ground — and no one really seems to be clear on it at the moment.
Clay Matthews on latest roughing call: NFL is ‘getting soft’
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews does not understand why he was flagged — yet again — for roughing the passer, this time while sacking Washington's Alex Smith on Sunday. Matthews think it's an indication that the NFL is "getting soft."
Peterson runs for 120 yards, 2 TDs, Skins top Packers 31-17
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — A week removed from what he called "an embarrassment," Adrian Peterson turned in his first 100-yard game in more than 10 months.
Roughing it: Packers confident in how they go after QB
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Keep the head up. Be aware if the quarterback got rid of the ball. Wrap up.
Seems like a simple enough checklist for a defender to hit the quarterback.
A roughing-the-passer penalty on linebacker Clay Matthews against the Minnesota Vikings might have raised new questions with the Green Bay Packers.
Vikings’ Sendejo fined $53,482 by NFL for hit vs. Packers
NEW YORK (AP) — Vikings safety Andrew Sendejo was fined $53,482 by the NFL on Friday for his hit during a play in Minnesota's tie at Green Bay last weekend.
Sendejo was penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness after tackling Packers wide receiver Davante Adams in the third quarter. The safety knocked into Adams with his right shoulder just after Xavier Rhodes made initial contact.
Renewed push to protect QBs has defenders stumped
Pass rushers like Clay Matthews are stumped as to what constitutes a clean hit on quarterbacks anymore. Lending a sympathetic ear is none other than Mike Zimmer, one of the biggest beneficiaries of the league's renewed emphasis on protecting the passer.
"It's pretty difficult," the coach of the Minnesota Vikings said. "You've got a target area the size of a strike zone."
Packers dealing with costly penalties in tie with Vikings
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Every week, the Green Bay Packers are like any other NFL team, sending video of officials' calls they didn't agree with to the league office for review.
This week's will have one that undoubtedly the league already knows the team is unhappy with: Linebacker Clay Matthews' controversial roughing-the-passer penalty late in the fourth quarter, a call that wiped out a Packers interception and allowed the Minnesota Vikings to escape Lambeau Field with a 29-29 tie on Sunday.
Packers OLB Reggie Gilbert making move, impressing in Year 3
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers' defense needs someone to step up behind Clay Matthews and Nick Perry at outside linebacker.
Reggie Gilbert is starting to make his move. After a strong showing during the team's preseason-opening victory over the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night, Gilbert got extensive work with the starting defense in practice Sunday, the first time the team was back on the field.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Lucas Patrick hasn't played baseball since he was a child. With one swing of the bat, he broke the nose of one of the "faces of the franchise."
At the Green & Gold Charity Softball Game on Saturday in Grand Chute, Patrick's line drive struck linebacker Clay Matthews in the face, breaking the long-haired star's nose.
GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews says he needs surgery on his nose after getting hit in the face with a line drive during a charity softball game.
Matthews was pitching during Saturday's game when offensive lineman Lucas Patrick hit the ball directly into Matthews' face, knocking him to the ground. The Green Bay Press Gazette reports that Matthews got up, covered his face with his glove, then walked to the dugout. He did not return to the game.

No pressure not a good thing for Matthews and the Packers
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Clay Matthews is learning new playbook terminology this spring under a new defensive coordinator, though his overall goals haven't changed.
It's more important than ever for the Green Bay Packers' long-haired linebacker to get to the quarterback.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers might be busy on the third day of the NFL draft. General manager Brian Gutekunst begins the day with eight selections over the final four rounds.
The Packers could use an edge rusher to help Clay Matthews and Nick Perry. Wide receiver and offensive line are also positions of need.
Packers’ GM doesn’t want Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson, Clay Matthews to ‘walk out the door’
GREEN BAY — Brian Gutekunst wants to see wide receivers Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson and linebacker Clay Matthews on the Green Bay Packers’ roster in 2018.
But the first-year general manager acknowledged at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis this week that finances will definitely play a role on whether the three veterans do indeed stick around.
Tom Oates: It’s time for Packers GM Brian Gutekunst to get to work
It’s almost March, which means it’s time for Brian Gutekunst to go to work.
Not that Gutekunst has been vacationing since becoming general manager of the Green Bay Packers in January, but now comes the hard part. Gutekunst has to start constructing the roster for a team that will be in win-now mode as long as quarterback Aaron Rodgers is around.
Packers: Damarious Randall undergoes surgery on hand
GREEN BAY — It turns out Damarious Randall’s curious 2017 season had another twist to it: The Green Bay Packers third-year cornerback played through a hand injury that bothered him all season and required surgery.
Randall, who ended the year as the Packers’ most reliable cover man, had the surgery Monday. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which was first to report the minor procedure, reported that Randall had a small bone fixed in his hand at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
Not much at stake for this year’s Lions-Packers finale
Twice in the past three seasons, this was a de facto NFC North title game.
Now, the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers are already out of the playoff race.
So much for another big showdown in the regular-season finale.
Packers: For Clay Matthews, uncertain future is ‘not something you dwell on’
GREEN BAY — Clay Matthews has seen it happen. A pass rusher doesn’t have the sack numbers to match his contract numbers – never mind the fact that sacks aren’t the best way to measure productivity – and the next thing you know, he’s off to another team and starting over.
Packers: Injuries force Green Bay to shuffle deck in loss to Minnesota Vikings
GREEN BAY — Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams weren’t the only ones who sat out the Green Bay Packers’ 16-0 loss to the Minnesota Vikings Saturday night — which certainly didn’t help the Packers’ chances.
Vikings LT Reiff’s ankle improves; questionable vs Packers
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings left tackle Riley Reiff's sprained ankle has improved, and the team has listed him as questionable to play at Green Bay.
Packers: Tom Oates gives Green Bay an overall grade of ‘B’ for overtime win at Tampa Bay
Brett Hundley ran the wrong play on a fourth-and-1 toss in the third quarter but was superb after that. Davante Adams made a huge touchdown catch to tie the game. Then he did it again to win the game. Cleveland stuffed the box and the backs had little running room. Jamaal Williams helped in the passing game.
Packers: Tom Oates gives Green Bay an overall grade of ‘B-’ in overtime win over Tampa Bay
Brett Hundley overthrew an open Geronimo Allison in the end zone and threw too far inside on a shot play to Jordy Nelson, resulting in an interception. Jamaal Williams ran hard and made some nice cuts en route to 113 yards rushing. Williams and Aaron Jones could form a great tandem. Jones has his burst back.
Packers: Rookie ‘workhorse’ Jamaal Williams happy to carry rushing load
GREEN BAY – Luckily, the cameras didn’t catch Clay Matthews’ facial expression as Jamaal Williams went whizzing by him on the Green Bay Packers’ sideline last Sunday night.
Packers: Aaron Rodgers’ recovery impresses Clay Matthews
GREEN BAY — Clay Matthews and Jordy Nelson aren’t sure when — or if — their quarterback will be back. But the two Green Bay Packers veterans and pals of Aaron Rodgers know this much: They’re impressed by what appears to be an incredible recovery from the broken right collarbone he suffered six weeks ago.
LB Clay Matthews on mend with Packers in must-win mode
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — A week of missing practice with a groin injury allowed Clay Matthews to get an up-close view of injured quarterback Aaron Rodgers' rehab work after collarbone surgery.
Matthews might be back this week for the Green Bay Packers. If the linebacker had any say, Rodgers might follow him back to the field in a few weeks, too.
Linebacker Clay Matthews out for Packers against Steelers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Green Bay will be without linebacker Clay Matthews when the Packers try to pull an upset in Pittsburgh against the Steelers.
The Packers made Matthews inactive for their prime-time meeting with the AFC North-leading Steelers. Matthews is dealing with a groin injury. Matthews suffered the injury in the first half of last week's loss to Baltimore.
Tom Oates: Packers get overall grade of ‘D-’ in loss to Ravens
Brett Hundley threw interceptions on the first two possessions, killing the team's momentum. The first one was a great play by the defender, the second one was just a poor decision. Hundley holds the ball too long, one reason he was sacked six times. Welcome to the NFL, Devante Mays. They strip the ball here.
Packers: Martellus Bennett episode can galvanize Green Bay locker room, Clay Matthews says
GREEN BAY — Corey Linsley had the preferred messaging down cold Thursday afternoon.
A week removed from the Martellus Bennett melodrama, the veteran Green Bay Packers center trotted out the sound bite many of his brethren have uttered during the past several days.
“We’re only concerned about the people in this locker room,” he said.
And Linsley meant it — though he said so with a smile.
Packers can breathe a bit easier after beating Bears 23-16
CHICAGO (AP) — The Green Bay Packers would love nothing more than to have Aaron Rodgers return this season and lead a deep playoff run.
There's no guarantee their superstar quarterback comes back from a broken collarbone. That means Brett Hundley is on the spot, at least for now.
"We're trying to weather the storm until 12 gets back," linebacker Clay Matthews said. "You got to get a win. That's exactly what we did. We grinded it out."
