Jets’ tight ends in tightly contested competition
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets will spend the next few weeks sorting through their intriguing quarterback situation, with Sam Darnold, Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater the clear focus of attention.
But the tight ends are in perhaps the most tightly contested competition of camp.
New York has a group of five mostly unheralded players trying to win roster spots and be among the guys catching passes from whoever ends up under center this season.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed tight end Chris Herndon, their fourth-round draft pick, to a four-year contract.
The team announced the signing Monday, the day before organized team activities were to begin.
Quarterback Sam Darnold, the No. 3 overall selection, is the only player among the Jets' six-man draft class who remains unsigned.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Coach Jack Del Rio says there's a "good chance" the Oakland Raiders will have receiver Amari Cooper back after he missed last week's game with a sprained ankle.
Cooper was listed as questionable on Saturday for the game Monday night at Philadelphia.
Raiders C Rodney Hudson active vs. Cowboys despite illness
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland Raiders center Rodney Hudson will play against the Dallas Cowboys despite being a late addition to the injury report with an illness.
Hudson was listed as questionable earlier Sunday before being active for the night game against the Cowboys.
Raiders TE Clive Walford makes most of rare opportunity
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Clive Walford spent most of the first three months of the season as an afterthought on the Oakland Raiders offense.
With the addition of Jared Cook as the starting tight end and an offense that relied much more on three-receiver sets than using multiple tight ends, Walford got few opportunities to make plays for Oakland.
Raiders sign tight end Jared Cook
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — When tight end Jared Cook arrived in Oakland for a free-agent visit, the Raiders had plenty of selling points to lure him onto the team with a dynamic offense on an up-and-coming franchise.
A film session with quarterback Derek Carr proved to be the final straw to get Cook to sign a two-year deal with the Raiders on Thursday.
Texans’ Joseph fined $24K by NFL for unnecessary roughness
NEW YORK (AP) — Houston cornerback Johnathan Joseph has been fined $24,309 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness in the Texans' 27-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders in Mexico City last Monday night.

Marcell Dareus back from suspension, not playing for Bills
Marcell Dareus' return to the Buffalo Bills will have to wait at least another week with the star defensive tackle not playing against Los Angeles.
Dareus just completed a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, but then injured his hamstring in practice Friday. The Rams will be without three members of their vaunted starting defensive line after Michael Brockers, Robert Quinn and William Hayes were all declared inactive.
