Jags sticking with QB Kessler despite woeful, 3-game stretch
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Quarterback Cody Kessler has taken the Jacksonville Jaguars to a new low in 2018.
The Jaguars (4-10) have totaled 658 yards in three games since Kessler replaced inconsistent starter Blake Bortles, including a season-low 192 yards in a 16-13 loss to Washington on Sunday. It's the franchise's worst three-game stretch of offense since Blaine Gabbert's second year in 2012.
Injuries have Redskins-Jaguars looking like preseason game
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Cover your eyes, folks. This one could be ugly, even by late-season NFL standards.
When the Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars take the field Sunday, it might look a little like a preseason game. The dreaded fourth preseason game, too.
4th Redskins QB starter of season prepped with ‘Madden NFL’
WASHINGTON (AP) — This is what it's come to for the Washington Redskins: Their fourth quarterback of a once-promising, now-lost season, Josh Johnson, will be making his first NFL start since 2011 and spent time playing the "Madden NFL" video game to try to pick up something about his new teammates.
"I learned their names, first and foremost," Johnson said with a smile.
QB Bortles says ‘time’s probably limited’ when you don’t win
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Blake Bortles isn't quite ready to focus on his future with the franchise.
For now, the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback is trying to be supportive teammate.
Bortles will start a regular-season game on the bench for the first time since Sept. 14, 2014, serving as Cody Kessler's backup against Indianapolis (6-5) on Sunday.
Jaguars fire OC, bench Blake Bortles after 7th straight loss
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars sacked offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and quarterback Blake Bortles one day after the team's seventh consecutive loss.
Coach Doug Marrone fired Hackett and benched Bortles on Monday, making sweeping changes to one of the league's worst offenses.
Losing Jaguars sticking with Blake Bortles as starting QB
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars are sticking with Blake Bortles as their starting quarterback.
Coach Doug Marrone made the announcement Monday, one day after benching Bortles early in the third quarter of a 20-7 loss to Houston.
ICYMI in NFL Week 7: Kaepernick, social issues back in news
Colin Kaepernick is no longer in the NFL — which, when one considers that Derek Anderson and Cody Kessler are getting snaps at quarterback, is fascinating — and the White House-driven conversation about pregame national anthems in the league largely has receded.
Bortles benched, Jaguars implode after 20-7 loss to Texans
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Blake Bortles is no longer Jacksonville's starting quarterback.
Whether he regains the job in the next week is anybody's guess.
Bortles fumbled on the team's third play of each half, leading to 10 points and his benching in a 20-7 loss to AFC South rival Houston on Sunday.
Jaguars waive former draft picks Lee, Myrick in final cuts
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars waived two former draft picks in final roster cuts Saturday, including quarterback and sixth-round draft pick Tanner Lee.
The Jaguars also cut speedy cornerback Jalen Myrick, a seventh-round pick in 2017. Undrafted rookie Tre Herndon, from Vanderbilt, beat out Myrick for the fifth and final cornerback spot.
3 Jets fined by NFL for illegal hits in game last week
NEW YORK (AP) — Jets linebackers Jordan Jenkins, Darron Lee and Frankie Luvu were each fined $20,054 by the NFL for illegal hits in New York's preseason game at Washington last week.
Jenkins and Luvu were both docked Friday for roughing the passer, while Lee was fined for a horse-collar tackle in the Jets' 15-13 loss last Thursday.
Cleveland Browns ship Kevin Hogan to Washington, complete 2017 QB room cleanse
The Browns now have the same number of quarterbacks left on their roster who attempted a pass last season as 2017 wins.
New GM John Dorsey traded QB Kevin Hogan to Washington in exchange for a sixth-round pick Friday, per multiple reports. Hogan becomes the last of three holdover Browns quarterbacks to get dealt this offseason.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Cleveland Browns traded their third quarterback of the offseason, sending Kevin Hogan to the Washington Redskins.
The teams announced the deal Friday that includes swapping sixth-round picks. Cleveland acquires the 188th pick from Washington for No. 205, which it previously acquired from New England for cornerback Jason McCourty.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns continued their quarterback makeover, signing free agent Drew Stanton to a two-year contract.
The veteran is expected to back up Tyrod Taylor, recently acquired in a trade with Buffalo. Cleveland is also expected to draft a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft.
Stanton signed on Friday. He gives the Browns experienced depth and protection in case Taylor gets injured.
CLEVELAND (AP) — No longer part of the Browns' plans, Cody Kessler got passed to a new team.
Cleveland traded its former starting quarterback to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday, the latest move for the Browns who have spent the offseason upgrading the team's most troublesome position following a 0-16 season.
In exchange for Kessler, the Browns will receive a conditional 2019 seventh-round draft pick from the Jaguars, who were in the market to find a backup for starter Blake Bortles.
Browns agree to contract with QB Drew Stanton
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have agreed to a two-year contact with free agent quarterback Drew Stanton.
The team announced the pact on Sunday night. The Browns met last week with Stanton while they were in California scouting UCLA's Josh Rosen and USC's Sam Darnold — two quarterbacks in the mix to be selected by Cleveland with the No. 1 overall draft pick next month.
Cleveland Browns quarterback woes solved: Beyond Belief (opinion video)
Cleveland Browns quarterback woes solved: Beyond Belief (opinion video)
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- You may think it's crazy, but here at the Beyond Belief desk, we think we've come up with a solution to the Cleveland Browns quarterback problem.
Time does not permit us to go back and detail all the woes endured by the Browns since they returned, but we've gone through a lot of quarterbacks, that's for sure. See if any of these names ring a bell.
Cleveland Browns fans have been just as tortured with the quarterbacks the team has drafted as they have with the ones the team has passed up.
Watching Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson, quarterbacks the Browns were in position to draft, have early-career success has not been easy. Nor has watching quarterbacks the Browns have drafted the past two seasons, Cody Kessler and DeShone Kizer, struggle.

Ready or not: Rookie Kizer now Browns starting quarterback
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — DeShone Kizer will be next through the Browns' quarterback turnstile.
He doesn't want it to spin again anytime soon.
The rocket-armed rookie QB from Notre Dame was named Cleveland's starter for Saturday night's third exhibition game in Tampa Bay, and barring an unforeseen flop or injury — remember, these are the Browns — Kizer will start the Sept. 10 season opener against Pittsburgh.
Waiting game: Browns’ Jackson close to choosing starting QB
CLEVELAND (AP) — Coach Hue Jackson is letting the drama build to a crescendo. His pick as Cleveland's starting quarterback is only hours away.
Drum roll, please.
Following weeks of training camp practices and two exhibition games, Jackson said Tuesday he still hasn't decided if Brock Osweiler, rookie DeShone Kizer or Cody Kessler will start the team's season opener on Sept. 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kizer takes ‘step’ in Browns’ QB clash, could get next start
CLEVELAND (AP) — DeShone Kizer's time is coming. It's just not here yet.
Kizer excited Cleveland fans and impressed his teammates with a strong performance in his NFL exhibition debut, but Browns coach Hue Jackson isn't ready to name him his starting quarterback.
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Brock Osweiler has risen from trade throw-in to preseason starter.
The Browns' never-ending quarterback saga has produced yet another surprise.
Cleveland coach Hue Jackson picked Osweiler over Cody Kessler, rookie DeShone Kizer and Kevin Hogan to start Thursday's exhibition opener against the New Orleans Saints in what will be an important stage in a QB competition that's midway through its second week, with no end in sight.
CLEVELAND (AP) — No touchdowns. No sensational plays. No clarity.
Cleveland's quarterback competition doesn't seem any closer to a conclusion.
Calling the play of his QBs "spotty" during a scrimmage at FirstEnergy Stadium, Browns coach Hue Jackson said he isn't ready to name his starting quarterback for the Sept. 11 season opener.
"This thing is still really fluid in my mind," Jackson said Friday night.
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — His head is swimming with new terms, plays and formations. He's got endless film to watch, notes to take and there's a playbook nearly as thick as any finance text he carried around at Notre Dame.
But fresh out of college, DeShone Kizer's treating his job as an NFL quarterback as if he's back on campus.
"I like to consider this like a calculus class," the Browns rookie said. "You miss one day of a calculus class, you're set back for the whole semester."
Browns sign rookie QB DeShone Kizer to contract
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer has signed his four-year contract.
The deal is projected to be worth nearly $5 million and include a $1.7 million signing bonus.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Finding Bigfoot has been more productive than the Cleveland Browns' search for a franchise quarterback.
PHOENIX (AP) — Browns coach Hue Jackson has little use for pro days, especially when looking at quarterbacks.
Cleveland is still searching for its franchise QB after nearly two decades back in the NFL. The Browns have the top overall draft pick following a 1-15 season, and also the 12th pick. Should they opt to select a quarterback, it will be one who came to a private workout.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Terrelle Pryor doesn't know if Kirk Cousins will be the Washington Redskins' starting quarterback, but he hopes so.
Pryor signed a one-year deal with the Redskins last week hours after Cousins signed his franchise tender, and the day after the team fired general manager Scot McCloughan. Pryor wants Cousins to be the one throwing him the ball, but he doesn't need that after what the versatile receiver went through with the Browns.
Browns’ RG3 practices, will start in finale against Steelers
CLEVELAND (AP) — Robert Griffin III can finish what he started.
Cleveland's quarterback was cleared from concussion protocol and will start Sunday at Pittsburgh in the season finale.
Griffin was checked by an independent neurologist — the last step in the NFL's procedure on head injuries — and practiced as the Browns (1-14) prepared to face a Steelers team that has locked up a playoff spot and will rest several starters, including stars Ben Roethlisberger, Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown.
Browns back from bye, but no word on if RG3 will start
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Robert Griffin III healed much faster than doctors thought.
Now, if he can just mend the 0-12 Browns.
Told earlier this season that it was "highly unlikely" he would be able to play again in 2016 after breaking a bone in his left shoulder late in the Sept. 11 opener at Philadelphia, Griffin practiced Monday as the winless Browns returned from their bye and he could start Sunday when they host the Cincinnati Bengals.
Browns place starting guard John Greco on injured reserve
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns offensive lineman John Greco has been placed on injured reserve after hurting his right foot in Sunday's loss to New York.
Greco started all 12 games for the winless Browns, who have been overrun by injuries all season. He started 10 games at right guard and two at center. Greco did not miss a snap before he was injured in the third quarter of the 27-13 loss to the Giants.
New York Giants off to best start since 9-1 in 2008
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants are riding their longest winning streak in six years, and there is no reason to think it is going to end soon.
Rookie coach Ben McAdoo's team has won five in a row and it is heading to Cleveland this weekend for a game against the winless Browns, who will be without starting quarterback Cody Kessler because of a concussion.
And yet, the Giants (7-3) are not even close to peaking.
Browns’ Kessler out with concussion, McCown back as starter
CLEVELAND (AP) — With Browns rookie quarterback Cody Kessler in concussion protocol, Josh McCown will start Sunday against the New York Giants.
Kessler sustained his second concussion since Oct. 23 in Sunday's 24-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, dropping the Browns to 0-11. Coach Hue Jackson does not know when — or if — Kessler will return this season, and added that will be determined by the team's medical staff.
Browns brutalized in 24-9 loss to Steelers
CLEVELAND (AP) — The losses are now coming with lumps for the Browns.
The 11th one this season was the most painful yet.
Cleveland was manhandled on Sunday by the Steelers, who had eight sacks in a 24-9 battering. Pittsburgh gave Browns rookie quarterback Cody Kessler his second concussion in five weeks, an injury that could end a tough first season for him.
Back on track: Steelers punish Browns 24-9, end 4-game skid
CLEVELAND (AP) — A short bus ride into Ohio put Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers back in the fast lane.
The playoffs remain a possible destination.
Le'Veon Bell scored on a 1-yard touchdown run — long after time expired in the first half — and Pittsburgh's defense recorded eight sacks as the Steelers snapped a four-game losing streak, 24-9 Sunday over the winless Cleveland Browns.
Starting over: Browns’ Kessler eager to play after benching
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — There's snow, gusting winds and temperatures in the low 30s forecast for Sunday's game between the Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Bone-chilling football weather.
For Cleveland rookie quarterback Cody Kessler, it may not feel any colder than last week in Baltimore.
Cleveland Browns could be preparing for a return of QB Robert Griffin III
The Browns could be preparing for a return off injured reserve from quarterback Robert Griffin III in the near future, and the latest indications from both Griffin and the Browns' management braintrust appear positive.
Griffin, who endured a broken bone in his left (non-throwing) shoulder just minutes into his Browns debut, rattled off a cycle of at least five different quarterbacks to throw a pass this season for the league's last remaining winless team at 0-10.
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is still in the mix to return to the lineup Sunday in Baltimore.
The Steelers (4-3) listed Roethlisberger as questionable on Friday's injury report. Roethlisberger is less than three weeks removed from surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. He practiced in a limited capacity all week. Swelling has not been an issue and Roethlisberger said his biggest concerns are pain tolerance and the ability to protect himself in the pocket.
Browns want long look at Kessler, starting against Cowboys
CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie quarterback Cody Kessler will be the Browns' starter this week and the foreseeable future.
How long that is could be up to him.
Kessler, who returned to practice a few days ago after being sidelined since Oct. 23 with a concussion, will start Sunday as the winless Browns (0-8) host the Dallas Cowboys. Kessler has shown steady progress and Browns coach Hue Jackson wants to find out if he can be Cleveland's long-term QB.
