Police ID Michigan parents who died from carbon monoxide
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) — Police have identified the couple who died after carbon monoxide apparently filled a house from a generator and portable heater while their 5-month-old son survived.
Battle Creek Det. Sgt. Todd Elliott said Thursday that 20-year-old Brandon Bull of Bronson and 19-year-old Cylie Jo Canniff of Coldwater had been using a gas-powered generator to operate a kerosene heater inside the house.

11 urban forestry projects to share nearly $90,000 in grants
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Grants worth nearly $90,000 are being awarded to 11 urban forestry projects in Michigan.
The state says the competitive grant program pays for projects that create and sustain local programs. It's a partnership between the Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forest Service.

4 arraigned on charges of plotting to kidnap, kill child
COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — Four southern Michigan people charged with plotting to kidnap, rape and kill a child are each being held on $5 million bonds after being arraigned.

COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette (SHOO'-tee) says he has charged four southern Michigan people with conspiring to kidnap and kill a child.
Schuette says a Michigan State Police learned the four planned to kidnap a young child at a county fair, torture and sexually assault the child until death and then dispose of the body.

Official: failing southern Michigan dam could cause flooding
COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — Officials in southern Michigan say the Coldwater River's Blackhawk Dam is failing, which may lead to flooding if the crews aren't able to adequately repair the structure.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reported Sunday that local officials were dispatching repair materials and equipment in hopes of repairing the dam.
DTE eyes southern Michigan for wind energy project
COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — DTE Energy says it has plans for 50 to 70 wind turbines in southern Michigan's Branch County.
The Daily Reporter says the utility made a presentation Thursday to county commissioners in Coldwater. Commission Chairman Ted Gordon says any key decisions about the placement of turbines will be made by townships.
COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — Two men have been arrested in connection with damage earlier this year at a cemetery in southern Michigan.
The Daily Reporter in Coldwater reports that 19-year-old William Vanness and 20-year-old Christopher Palmerton, Jr. are charged with conspiracy to maliciously damage property and malicious damage to tombstones.
COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say grave markers were tipped over, broken or thrown at a cemetery in southern Michigan.
Coldwater Municipal Services Manager Dave Sattler tells The Daily Reporter that he discovered the damage on Wednesday at Oak Grove Cemetery. He estimated that more than 30 grave markers in the oldest section of the cemetery were damaged.

Fort Wayne bakery with nearly 100 workers being shut down
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Nearly 100 jobs are being cut with the closing of a Fort Wayne bakery in the coming months.
Aunt Millie's Bakeries says it will start shutting down the bakery in December and have production phased out in April. The company says the closure will eliminate 91 jobs, but that it will keep its headquarters office with about 120 workers open in downtown Fort Wayne.
Michigan inmate’s published book raises ethics questions
COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan inmate's book that was published this summer is raising questions as to whether a prison writer should profit from tragedy.
Curt Dawkins, 49, is imprisoned for fatally shooting Tom Bowman of Kalamazoo while on drugs in 2004. He's serving life without parole at Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, the Detroit News reported .
COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — Officials say a more than $250 million hog processing facility in southern Michigan will handle hogs from states including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Iowa.
Hatfield, Pennsylvania-based Clemens Food Group held a ribbon-cutting Saturday at the plant in Coldwater that is expected to eventually employ 830 people. It starts running in August and be at full production in early September. It will process thousands of hogs per day.
COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — A health official says cases of whooping cough are spreading among Amish residents in southwestern Michigan.
Val Newton, prevention services director for the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency, told the agency's board Thursday that whooping cough, or pertussis, has struck up to 30 members of St. Joseph County's Amish community.

Police: Michigan man hit by vehicle on Ohio road dies
NEWARK, Ohio (AP) — A Michigan man has died after police say he was struck on a central Ohio road by a vehicle that then fled.
Newark police say a passerby reported an injured man lying along State Route 16 late Sunday night. Authorities say 24-year-old William Lee Goodman III, of Coldwater, Michigan, was taken to a hospital, where he died Monday morning.
Police say Goodman recently had been living in Newark, about 40 miles east of Columbus.
Motel operator pleads guilty in wage investigation
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) — Investigators say a Michigan motel operator who agreed to pay back wages forced some employees to cash checks and return the money.
Mehul Patel pleaded guilty Thursday to concealing those facts from the U.S. Labor Department when investigators tried to confirm that he was following minimum wage laws. The 31-year-old Patel, known as Mike, operated motels in Coldwater and Battle Creek.
