Things to Know about George H.W. Bush
HOUSTON (AP) — George H.W. Bush was largely known for his work in public office, from his time as a Texas congressman and CIA director to his years in the White House as president and Ronald Reagan's vice president. But the World War II hero and great-grandfather also was an avid skydiver, played in the first-ever College World Series and was the longest-married president in U.S. history.
Here's a closer look at those and other elements of his life:
Arkansas extends Dave Van Horn’s contract through 2023
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas has extended its contract with baseball coach Dave Van Horn, three months after he led the Razorbacks to the finals of the College World Series.
The university announced Wednesday that Van Horn's contract has been extended two years through the 2023 season. The contract calls for annual salary and compensation of $925,000, plus incentives based on the team's performance, coaching honors and academic scores.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State's trophy for winning this year's College World Series is now on display at the Oregon Historical Society in downtown Portland.
The Beavers defeated Arkansas in June to claim their third national championship in baseball.
The trophy can be seen Wednesday through Sunday in the pavilion of the Oregon Historical Society on Southwest Park Avenue. Admission to view the trophy is free.
HARRISON, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn says he's agreed to a contract extension through the 2023 season after taking the Razorbacks to a runner-up finish in last month's College World Series.
Van Horn, who just completed his 16th season at Arkansas, said Tuesday night that the deal includes options for the 2024 and 2025 season. He declined to release specifics.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins signed first-round draft pick Trevor Larnach just one day before Major League Baseball's deadline.
For both sides, the delay was well worth the wait. There were no contentious contract negotiations in the way, only a College World Series championship for Larnach with Oregon State.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The popular narrative has been that Oregon State's run to the national championship was fueled by the Beavers' desire to redeem themselves for fizzling out in last year's College World Series.
Coach Pat Casey doesn't dispute that. But he says there is more to it.
Correction: CWS Finals story
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — In a story June 28 about the College World Series between Oregon State and Arkansas, The Associated Press reported erroneously that three infielders had failed to catch a foul ball during Game 2. It was two infielders and the right fielder.
A corrected version of the story is below:
Oregon State wins College World Series, beating Arkansas 5-0
Freshman Kevin Abel's performance on mound leads Oregon State to 5-0 win over Arkansas for national championship
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Oregon State hadn't been able to catch a break in the College World Series finals. And then the ninth inning happened Wednesday night.
Three Arkansas fielders watched a foul ball drop between them with two outs. If one of them catches the ball, the Razorbacks would have locked up the national championship.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Arkansas didn't hit much against Luke Heimlich and Christian Chamberlain in Game 1 of the College World Series finals. In fact, the Razorbacks struck out 16 times.
Somehow, some way, they sit on the cusp of their first national championship in baseball after beating Oregon State 4-1 Tuesday night.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Game 1 of the College World Series finals between Arkansas and Oregon State was postponed until Tuesday night because of rain — just the latest in a line of delays caused by the weather this year.
"In my 16 years of being involved with this championship, this has been the most challenging College World Series as it relates to inclement weather," NCAA director of championships and alliances Randy Buhr said.
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State has hired Indiana's Chris Lemonis to be its next baseball coach.
Lemonis, 48, has led the Hoosiers to the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four years. He was also an assistant at Louisville when the school made three trips to the College World Series.
The school announced Monday that Lemonis will replace interim coach Gary Henderson, who led the Bulldogs on a surprise run to the College World Series. He'll be introduced on campus Tuesday.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Oregon State has won 109 of 127 baseball games over two seasons with mostly the same cast of players. The Beavers see winning a national championship as the only way to validate their body of work.
"Ultimately," Beavers coach Pat Casey said Sunday, "nobody cares how many games you win unless you win the last one."
Standing between Oregon State (53-11-1) and the title is Arkansas (47-19) in the best-of-three College World Series finals starting Monday night.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kevin Abel and Jake Mulholland made it look easy for Oregon State.
Until it wasn't.
Abel turned in the Beavers' best start of the College World Series and the usually reliable Mulholland came on in the eighth inning with a four-run lead and retired the first five batters he faced.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn had a simple message for his Razorbacks before they played Florida for a spot in the College World Series finals Friday night.
"I don't care if they have the best player in the SEC and the best pitcher in the SEC, we have to take it to them tonight," Van Horn said he told them.
Arkansas eliminates defending champ Florida at CWS
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Isaiah Campbell limited Florida to two hits over 5 1/3 innings, Arkansas scored four times in five innings against first-round draft pick Brady Singer, and the Razorbacks earned a spot in the College World Series finals with a 5-2 win over the defending champion Gators on Friday night.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — It has been decades since an offense at the College World Series has been as prolific as Oregon State's.
The good times — and the runs — kept rolling for the Beavers in a 12-2 win over Mississippi State on Friday. Oregon State used a five-run second inning to build a big lead, batted around twice and never were threatened thanks to Brandon Eisert's season-long 5 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Florida carried a five-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning against Texas Tech. Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan never let himself get comfortable.
"We knew they weren't going away," O'Sullivan said. "They hung in there with us, and we knew it would be a nine-inning ballgame."
It was every bit a nine-inning game Thursday night.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Major League Baseball will come to Omaha for a day next year as part of an initiative to take the product to new places, commissioner Rob Manfred said Thursday.
As part of the buildup for the 2019 College World Series, the Detroit Tigers will play a regular-season game against the Kansas City Royals at TD Ameritrade Park on June 13. The CWS starts two days later.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Oregon State was down three runs when a steady mist moved in at TD Ameritrade Park in the eighth inning Wednesday night.
Perfect conditions for a team from the Pacific Northwest.
"Every time we're playing and it starts to rain, everyone looks around and says, 'OK, we're going to come back and do what we do at home,'" OSU shortstop Cadyn Grenier said. "When the rain comes, we know there's a possibility of a storm coming — and that's from us."
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Brett Daniels walked in the go-ahead run after Adley Rutschman tied it with a three-run double in the eighth inning, and Oregon State knocked North Carolina out of the College World Series with an 11-6 win Wednesday night.
It was a stunning turnabout after the Tar Heels had wiped out a 3-0 deficit to go up 6-3 in the sixth. North Carolina had been 37-0 when leading after seven innings and had won 50 straight when scoring six runs, the longest streak in Division I.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Dominic Fletcher was a freshman All-American in 2017 and so impressive in the fall practices that coach Dave Van Horn thought Arkansas might have another Andrew Benintendi in the making.
A month into the season, though, Fletcher was batting .190 and led the team in strikeouts.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals will play a regular-season game in Omaha the week the 2019 College World Series opens, The Associated Press has learned.
Major League Baseball and the NCAA have been working to arrange a game as a kickoff event to the CWS, two people close to the situation told the AP on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Jackson Kowar's first inning didn't portend the stellar afternoon he was about to have Tuesday. He didn't give up a run in the first, but he threw 25 pitches.
"Just reminded him he's going to have to be a little more economical," Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan said.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The College World Series game between Arkansas and Texas Tech has been postponed because of the threat of rain in the Omaha area Tuesday night.
The Razorbacks and Red Raiders will play their Bracket 2 winners' game on Wednesday. The Bracket 1 losers' game between North Carolina and Oregon State will follow.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Go bananas, Mississippi State Bulldogs! You're one win away from the College World Series finals.
Jordan Westburg hit a grand slam, doubled and drove in seven runs and Mississippi State continued its surprise postseason surge by beating North Carolina 12-2 on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (39-27), with two wins at the CWS, are off until Friday. Win then or on Saturday, and they'll be playing for the national championship next week.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Oregon State kept things loose in the clubhouse during a weather delay that stretched to 4 ½ hours at the College World Series. Reserve outfielder Joe Casey entertained teammates by stuffing 30 pieces of gum into his mouth, a party game known as "Mafia" broke out and the tunes were cranked up.
When it was time to return to the field, the Beavers were all business.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The NCAA has postponed the North Carolina-Mississippi State game at the College World Series until Tuesday morning.
The elimination game between Oregon State and Washington on Monday was interrupted for 4 hours, 31 minutes in the sixth inning because of storms in the Omaha area. A threat of more rain Monday night, plus the possibility of a late start time, led the NCAA to reschedule North Carolina-Mississippi State.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The College World Series game between Oregon State and Washington was delayed in the top of the sixth inning because of lightning in the Omaha area.
Washington led the Beavers 5-4 in Monday's elimination game at the time.
The grounds crew rolled the tarp over the infield even though there was no rain at TD Ameritrade Park. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the area and rain was falling elsewhere in the city.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Texas Tech cleared the hurdle of winning a College World Series opener. It was a high one, too.
Gabe Holt hit a tiebreaking single in the fifth inning and drove in an insurance run in the ninth, leading the Red Raiders to a stunning 6-3 win over defending national champion Florida on Sunday night.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Once Arkansas' offense got rolling against Texas in the sixth inning, nothing could stop the Razorbacks. Not even the weather.
Five straight batters had reached base when the teams were pulled from the field for a weather delay. When play resumed 2 hours, 49 minutes later, five more in a row got on base.
What turned into an eight-run sixth carried the Razorbacks to an 11-5 win in their College World Series opener on Sunday.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Mississippi State's flair for the dramatic continued in its College World Series opener.
Luke Alexander's drive to right field got past Christian Jones in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing Hunter Stovall to score from second base to give Mississippi State a 1-0 victory over Washington on Saturday night.
Of the Bulldogs' seven wins in the NCAA Tournament, three have come in walk-off fashion and a fourth on their final at-bat.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — It took nearly 4 1/2 hours in 95-degree heat to play the opening game of the College World Series.
Time flew for North Carolina coach Mike Fox. He was having fun.
The Tar Heels knocked out Oregon State ace Luke Heimlich during a five-run third inning and went on to beat the Beavers 8-6 on Saturday.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — State and local officials have announced an effort to combat sex trafficking in Omaha during the NCAA Men's College World Series this month.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — It was a long time ago, but Washington teammates Joe DeMers and Willie MacIver once talked about playing together in the College World Series.
Here they are.
In 2010, the two played in a youth baseball tournament held in Omaha at the same time as the CWS. While here, their team attended some games at Rosenblatt Stadium.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Oregon State pitcher Luke Heimlich is the probable starter in the opening game of the College World Series on Saturday, and he said he is ready for any kind of reception he receives from the fans on the sport's biggest stage.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Dave Van Horn has never been one to shy away from a direct answer to a direct question.
In fact, if the Arkansas coach is known for anything outside of all the winning teams he's put together during his 30-year coaching career, it's for his honesty.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Brady Singer knew the hook was coming. He paused behind the mound with two outs in the seventh inning and waited for Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan.
The opening weekend of Mississippi State's baseball season couldn't have been much more demoralizing. The proud program lost three straight games, lost its head coach and had multiple excuses to totally fall apart.
Instead, the Bulldogs' season will end at the College World Series.
Texas Tech pitcher Davis Martin remembers what he was told when he got to the College World Series as a freshman two years ago, a message the right-hander appreciates much more with another opportunity.
"Enjoy every second of this because you never know if you're going to come back," Martin said. "Then we left, I was like 'Oh my gosh, I didn't embrace it enough.' And then just the blessing to go back again is just unbelievable."
Strikeouts on upswing entering College World Series
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — If the College World Series is like the rest of the season, there will be lots of strikeouts when the final eight teams play for the national championship at TD Ameritrade Park.
Strikeout numbers are the highest on record in college baseball, and pitching staffs averaging nine or more Ks per nine innings have tripled the last two years.
What's happening in the college game mirrors the major leagues, where strikeouts are on track to set a record for the 11th straight year.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kody Clemens had just launched another massive postseason home run when he stared hard into the opposing dugout and flashed the "Hook 'em Horns" hand sign.
It was the sort of bravado that has come to define the Clemens name at Texas and in baseball in general. And like his father Roger did more than 30 years ago, Kody Clemens has led the Longhorns back to the College World Series with outsized confidence and the talent in a big bat to back it up.
When Lindsay Meggs arrived at Washington nine years ago, he proclaimed that he wanted the Huskies to become an "Omaha program" worthy of being in the College World Series mix on a regular basis.
It's finally happened, and maybe in the most unlikely of seasons.
"I don't think we mapped it out exactly this way," Meggs said.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's offense is racking up hits, working counts to get on base and coming up with timely hits to bring runners home.
College World Series team capsules
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A capsule look at the eight teams competing in the College World Series, which starts Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. (Capsules in order of CWS opening games. Coaches' records through super regionals):
NORTH CAROLINA (43-18)
Coach: Mike Fox (889-377-1, 20 years at North Carolina; 1,425-518-5, 35 years overall).
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Robbed of extra-base hits in his previous two at-bats, Florida's Austin Langworthy got a little lucky in his final one.
Langworthy homered off Steven Williams' glove in the 11th inning, giving the overall top-seeded Gators a 3-2 victory against Auburn in the deciding game of their NCAA super regional Monday night and sending the defending national champions to the College World Series for the fourth consecutive year.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Nothing short of a return to the College World Series would have been good enough for an Arkansas team that started the year in the top 5 of most national polls and loaded with expectations.
Facing the prospect of failing to reach that goal in a winner-take-all third super regional game, the Razorbacks responded.
Defending national champion Florida, Texas, Texas Tech and Arkansas won their winner-take-all games in the NCAA Tournament best-of-three super regionals on Monday and are headed to the College World Series.
The No. 1 national seed Gators beat Auburn 3-2 in 11 innings in Gainesville, Florida, when Austin Langworthy's deep drive to right field glanced off Steven Williams' glove and went over the fence for a walk-off home run.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Michael Davis and Texas Tech are going back to Omaha.
Davis hit the biggest of the Red Raiders' three home runs, a tiebreaking two-run shot that put them ahead to stay, in a 6-2 win over Duke on Monday to send them to the College World Series for the third time in five seasons.
