Cahokia Mounds society gets $100K grant for digital projects
COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The support group for the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site has been awarded a $100,000 grant for digital projects from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The Cahokia Mounds Museum Society announced the grant Wednesday. Officials will use it to develop a functional prototype of an augmented reality application available for smartphones and other applications and an educational website about Cahokia Mounds.
Illinois man sentenced in fatal shooting of SEMO student
ST. LOUIS (AP) — An Illinois man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison in the fatal shooting of a Southeast Missouri State University student during a botched carjacking.
Joline M. Smith, 87, of Highland, was born Feb. 12, 1930, in Chicago, and passed away Nov. 23, 2017, at her home in Highland.
She was a member of Troy United Methodist Church, Troy; Troy United Methodist Women and TUMS. She was a long-time member of the New Hope Chapter 432 OES. While attending Collinsville First United Methodist Church, she was a member of Dorcas Circle.
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings and advisories following heavy rainfall across northeastern Oklahoma.
Forecasters in Tulsa issued flood warnings for the Illinois River near Tahlequah, Chewey and Watts. The river was forecast to rise above flood stage at each location and minor flooding is expected through Monday.
Cahokia Mounds to host event marking spring’s arrival
COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A historic site in southwest Illinois is hosting an event to mark the arrival of spring.
The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency has announced that the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site will hold a dawn event Sunday.
Visitors are invited to gather at 6:45 a.m. to see dawn break over a model of a calendar used when Cahokia Mounds was home to thousands of Native Americans.
More than 800 gymnasts to compete at Southern Illinois meet
COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Hundreds of gymnasts are competing at a gymnastics meet this weekend that's expected to bring some 2,500 people to Southern Illinois.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/2l58l5p ) the 20th annual Gateway Challenge Gymnastics Meet is being held at the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville.
The event started Friday and continues Saturday and Sunday. It's hosted by World Class Gymnastics, a Belleville-based club.
The Alabama Sports Writers Association released the final rankings of the high school basketball season late Wednesday evening, and there were several position changes for area teams.
In Class 4A girls, the Cherokee County Lady Warriors (16-6) crept up a spot to No. 5. The Lady Warriors host Piedmont on Friday.

The two biggest changes both involved Class 4A Cherokee County. The Warrior boys (15-5) dropped from No. 3 to No. 7 this week, while the Lady Warriors (13-6) fell two spots from fourth to sixth. Both Warrior teams host White Plains on Friday.

Cahokia Mounds to offer free lectures on Illinois story
COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Illinois history buffs will get the chance to look back at 2,000 years of Native American history.
Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in southwestern Illinois is offering a series of free lectures.
The speaker at the first presentation on Jan. 15 is Jason King, who is director of the Center for American Archaeology. He'll discuss the center's research, including recent mound excavations. Other presentations will take place on Feb. 26 and March 19.
Swansea latest southern Illinois city to allow chickens
SWANSEA, Ill. (AP) — The southern Illinois city of Swansea is the latest in the region to allow residents to raise chickens in their backyards.
The Belleville News Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/2hKUmC9 ) that Swansea village leaders recently voted unanimously to allow chickens in neighborhoods that are zoned residential. That's different than four years ago when the village board rejected a similar plan. Swansea trustee Brian Wells says "people want to know what's in their food."

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A Missouri man has been ordered to spend 40 years in prison after having admitted in court that he played a role in the 2015 robbery killing of a man in Collinsville, Illinois.
Thirty-five-year-old Jessie James Werley of Farmington, Missouri, was sentenced Wednesday in Illinois' Madison County after he pleaded guilty to a first-degree murder count.
Throughout the 2016 high school football season, the Cedar Bluff Tigers’ football ranking in the Alabama Sports Writers Association weekly poll has resembled a pulse monitor.

Records released Friday after a Freedom of Information Act request by the Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/2dGyiW6 ) state 14-year-old Tray Turner suffered the fall on a staircase at Collinsville High School on Sept. 19 after asking another student to give him a push down the bannister.
