Interstate 70 in western Colorado is back open after a rock slide sent boulders the size of big SUVs tumbling down on part of the highway.
State transportation officials opened both eastbound lanes in Glenwood Canyon at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, and one westbound lane was opened a couple of hours later.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A stretch of Interstate 70 is closed in western Colorado because of a rock slide, forcing drivers to make long detours to travel east or west.
The rockslide happened early Tuesday in Glenwood Canyon and the full extent of the damage isn't known yet.

Transportation officials have reopened a 185-mile (298-kilometer) stretch of Interstate 70 between Denver and the Kansas border that was closed because of ice and blowing snow.
Transportation officials change avalanche mitigation system
FRISCO, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Department of Transportation is changing the way it handles avalanche mitigation efforts on the Western Slope.
The Summit Daily News reports the department, in conjunction with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and the U.S. Forest Service, last week completed the implementation of two new O'bellx avalanche control systems along Highway 40 near Berthoud Pass.
Colorado agency targeted in nationwide ransomware scheme
DENVER (AP) — Officials say no ransom was paid and no information was lost during a cyber extortion attack on the Colorado Department of Transportation's computer network last spring.
Brandi Simmons is a spokeswoman with the Colorado Governor's Office of Information Technology.
She said Wednesday that that agency, the FBI and others contained and eradicated the so-called "ransomware" attack that essentially froze hundreds of CDOT computers.

Independence Pass closes for winter following snowstorm
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Independence Pass near Aspen is closed for the winter season after more than a foot (.3 meters) of snow fell in the area over the weekend.
Colorado Department of Transportation officials said Monday the Aspen and Twin Lakes gates will remain closed, and crews will search the highway for any cars that might be parked at the summit or in campgrounds and on auxiliary roads.
DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — Colorado transportation officials say heavy rainfalls have pushed rocks, mud and other debris on to roadways and train tracks.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A plan to widen a section of Interstate 25 between Colorado Springs and Denver has received a federal funding boost of $65 million.

Colorado mountain pass roads open for summer
DENVER (AP) — Colorado's highest elevation roads are open in time for Memorial Day weekend.
The Mount Evans Highway opened Friday, a day after Independence Pass to Aspen and Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park opened for the season after being cleared of snow.
The Colorado Department of Transportation says the roads over Kebler (KEHB'-lur) and Guanella passes are also open for the season. Construction will keep Cottonwood Pass closed for another summer.
DENVER (AP) — Mount Evans Road will be back to opening at its normal Memorial Day weekend date this year after a shorter season than usual for motorists in 2017.

Nolan Olson was hit on U.S. Highway 160 in Pagosa Springs on Feb. 2 and died at a suburban Denver hospital Sunday. The 64-year-old Pagosa Springs man was an equipment operator for CDOT for 14 years.

Contract finalized for Interstate 25 express lanes project

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — Two Colorado bus operators are joining forces, as Road Runner Stage Lines is set to team with the Bustang state network.
The Durango Herald reports new, smaller and more modern 38-passenger buses will replace the 55-passenger buses currently used by Road Runner.
State bus service plans expansion into southwest Colorado

Colorado traffic deaths rise to 615, many in El Paso County
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Department of Transportation says the state's traffic death toll has spiked to 615, the highest it's been since 2004.
The Gazette reports data from the transportation department shows this year's total reached 615 on Monday.
Last year, the total was 608 — the first time since 2005 that it surpassed 600.

Crews close Independence Pass near Aspen for winter season
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Crews have closed Independence Pass near Aspen for the winter season.
The Colorado Department of Transportation, which shut the Aspen and Twin Lakes gates Friday morning, says drivers can get to Aspen this winter on State Highway 82 from Glenwood Springs.
The scenic pass, which reaches an elevation of 12,095 feet, usually reopens the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend, weather permitting.
