2 dead after wrong-way crash on Connecticut interstate
WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police say two people have died in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 91 in Wethersfield.
Police say 22-year-old Albert Correa, of Hartford, was driving south on the northbound side of the highway just before 6 a.m. Sunday when he collided head-on with a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Jonathan Villalobos, of Springfield, Massachusetts.
Correa was pronounced dead at the scene. Villalobos was taken to Hartford Hospital where he later died.
Driver killed, another seriously injured in wrong-way crash
ESSEX, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police say one driver died and another was seriously injured after a wrong-way crash involving three vehicles.
Authorities say the crash happened around 5:15 p.m. Monday on Route 9 in Essex.
Police say 38-year-old David Moran, of Deep River, entered the highway going in the wrong direction and struck a vehicle driven by 70-year-old Joseph Louis Kaplowe head-on.

WVIT-TV reports the man had been conscious when firefighter arrived around 2 p.m. Saturday to the home in Windham but died before he could be airlifted to the hospital.

Officials responded and found one of the men clinging to the edge of the broken ice. Authorities say the other man hadn't resurfaced.

Former Hartford police chief picked for public safety job
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut's governor-elect has chosen retired Hartford Police Chief James Rovella to be next commissioner of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.
Gov.-elect Ned Lamont also announced Friday he's selected Regina Rush-Kittle as deputy commissioner of the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and Stavros Mellekas as the state police colonel. All three have lengthy law enforcement backgrounds.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police investigated more accidents but handed out fewer tickets during the six-day Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period this year compared to 2017.
The department supplemented the normal patrol force with additional troopers from 12:01 a.m. Tuesday until 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
Troopers investigated 573 accidents this year, 60 involving injury and two that resulted in a fatality.
State police report over 200 accidents through Thanksgiving
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police have responded to more than 200 accidents so far during the Thanksgiving holiday, including one fatal accident.
State Police say they've also issued more than 1,000 tickets for motor vehicle infractions, including 322 tickets for speeding offenses and 161 for seal belt violations, as of Saturday morning.
And officers made 16 arrests for driving under the influence and received more than 5,000 calls for service.
State trooper suspended after drunken driving arrest
NORWICH, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut State Police trooper has been suspended following her arrest last weekend on drunken driving charges.
Norwich police say 34-year-old Trooper Sarah Starkey was arrested at about 6 p.m. Sunday after a witness said they had been involved in a minor accident and the other driver then left the scene.
Police say Starkey was off duty and driving her personal vehicle.
State police searching for driver that struck, killed man
BETHANY, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut state police are searching for a driver that struck and killed a pedestrian on a state highway.
Police say 25-year-old Tony Pires Goncalves, of Derby, succumbed to undisclosed injuries after being struck Sunday on Route 63 by a vehicle that fled the scene.
The collision happened near the Bethany-Naugatuck town line sometime before 7:30 a.m.

MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) — An armed man who had just gotten out of his moving car in a pharmacy parking lot was injured Thursday night when three officers opened fire on him when he turned toward them, Connecticut State Police said Friday.
The man who was shot, identified as Ryan Holley, 41, of Meriden, was taken to Hartford Hospital with injuries that were described by police as non-life threatening.
Woman killed in I-95 rollover crash
WESTBROOK, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police say a woman has been killed in a rollover crash in Interstate 95.
Authorities say the Jeep the woman was riding in swerved to the left, rolled over and struck a jersey barrier in Westbrook at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
The woman, 48-year-old Angela Ford, of Clinton, died at the scene. The driver, 48-year-old Kyle Ford, was hospitalized.
Police: Driver struck state police vehicle in hit-and-run
WINDSOR, Conn. (AP) — Police in Connecticut are searching for a driver they say struck a state police vehicle in a hit-and-run.
The crash happened around 5:15 p.m. Thursday in Windsor. State police say a blue pickup truck rear-ended the police vehicle and fled the scene.
Investigators say the suspect's vehicle was later found unoccupied.
Diver found unresponsive in Connecticut pond, police say
NEW HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Police say a diver has been found unresponsive in a pond in New Hartford.
Connecticut State Police say they were called to West Hill Pond shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday on reports of a diver in distress. Rescuers arrived and performed CPR but the diver was not responsive.
The diver was flown to a hospital by helicopter. Other details were not immediately available. Police say the case is under investigation.
State police announce Labor Day traffic enforcement numbers
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police say they issued more than 1,300 speeding tickets over the long holiday weekend.
The agency said Tuesday that troopers also investigated 281 accidents, including 63 involving injuries, and arrested 24 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Those numbers compare with 1,189 speeding tickets issued over the three-day Labor Day weekend last year, 529 accidents and 47 DUI arrests.

Police not saying if car was being chased at time of crash
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police and Hamden authorities are declining to say whether a police chase was underway at the time of a fatal accident in New Haven.
Officials say a stolen car crashed into a tree at about 1 a.m. Friday, killing the passenger and seriously injuring the driver.
State police said in a news release that Hamden police chased the car at some point before the crash. Troopers referred questions about the chase to Hamden police.
Man dies in motorcycle crash
NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A man has died in a motorcycle crash on a highway in Connecticut.
State police say 52-year-old Sherrod Robinson was riding a motorcycle on Interstate 91 on Saturday afternoon in North Haven when he lost control of the bike and crashed into the center median guard rail.
The North Haven Fire Department and Connecticut State Police responded to the scene. Robinson later died from his injuries.
TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police have failed to determine the cause of a head-on crash that killed two drivers in March.
Police Lt. William Baldwin tells the Republican-American the investigation is open but the cause of the March 18 crash in Cornwall may never be known.
WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (AP) — Two brothers police say talked about using a gun and offended other passengers by using vulgar language on a flight from Atlanta to Connecticut have been arrested.
Connecticut State Police say Raymond and Jonathan Hryb were arrested Sunday at Bradley International Airport. Raymond Hryb, of New Haven, was charged with threatening and breach of peace. Jonathan Hryb, of North Branford, was charged with breach of peace.
Women dies when pickup truck rear ends car on I-95
WATERFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police say a Pennsylvania woman has died in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 95.
Police say two cars were stopped for heavy traffic on the highway in Waterford at about 3 p.m. Sunday when a pickup truck failed to stop in time and rear-ended both cars.
A rear-seat passenger in one of the cars, identified by police as 34-year-old Leotie Miller, of Newport, Pennsylvania, was killed.
LITCHFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State police say they're investigating four untimely deaths in relation to heroin overdoses.
In a statement sent out Saturday evening, officials said the overdoses have been reported in Litchfield County over the past nine days, with heroin paraphernalia found at each scene.
State Police Trooper Kelly Grant says it is unknown if any of the consumed narcotics were contaminated "by any substances unknown" to the deceased.
GRISWOLD, Conn. (AP) — The two Democratic candidates are taking sides in a local battle over where to locate a proposed Connecticut State Police firing range.
Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont, the party's endorsed candidate, opposes the state's plans to locate the range in Griswold near Pachaug State Forest. He appeared Tuesday with local activists fighting the long-awaited project.

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police say a man was killed and two others critically injured in a rollover crash on Interstate 95.
Authorities say the crash happened around 4 a.m. Monday in Stamford. Police say the vehicle veered off onto the right shoulder, hit a sign, struck a bridge abutment and then rolled onto its roof.
Two men were taken to Stamford Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police haven't released the identity of the victim who was killed.

BARKHAMSTED, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut environmental police say a bear casually walked into a home, strolled past the homeowner and a child and helped itself to whatever food was inside the kitchen.
The bear break-in was reported in Barkhamsted Thursday. Authorities say the bear ate food from the refrigerator, pantry and countertops, and left just as state troopers arrived.
Connecticut State Police say they lost sight of the bear in the neighborhood, and the animal was not tagged.
Car crash seriously injures 2 young children
NORWICH, Conn. (AP) — Police have arrested a driver who they say swerved into oncoming traffic in Connecticut and hit a vehicle with a woman and her two children inside, seriously injuring the children.
The 32-year-old Colchester man is facing charges of assault, driving under the influence and driving without a license among other offenses.
Police say the crash happened Saturday night in Norwich. The man fled the scene on foot before he was apprehended by Connecticut State Police.
GRISWOLD, Conn. (AP) — The Connecticut State Police are planning to conduct a noise testing exercise at the site of a proposed firing range in Griswold.
The live gun fire exercise is planned for Wednesday, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. If there's inclement weather, the exercise will take place on Thursday.
State Police say the gun fire is needed to provide baseline information for a noise study that will be included in an environmental impact study for the project. Troopers will be on-site.

The victim of the crash in Interstate 691 at about 3 a.m. Tuesday was identified as 35-year-old Marieta Morchadze, of Brooklyn, New York.
Police say she was the passenger in a Nissan Versa that was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the highway that crashed into a tractor-trailer traveling east.
