Construction robots weld, bolt, lift to beat worker shortage
TOKYO (AP) — Robots that can weld, lift and bolt are being developed to help bridge labor shortages at Japanese construction sites, though their use will be limited to night shifts when no human workers will be nearby due to safety and regulatory concerns.
Major Japanese construction company Shimizu Corp. showed off several robots Monday, including one already in use at construction sites that picked up a big pile of boards and took them into an elevator.

Tollway awards nearly $1B in construction work this year
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Directors of Illinois' toll highways have approved five more construction contracts totaling $20 million.
The Illinois Tollway board of directors' action Thursday brings the year's total to nearly $1 billion in construction and engineering contracts. The work has been awarded to 78 different contractors.
It's part of the 15-year, $14 billion Move Illinois capital program.

Just two weeks after an “inspection” by President Uhuru Kenyatta, a $12 million Chinese-built Sigiri bridge in Western Kenya collapsed before it was completed.
Built by the Chinese Overseas Construction and Engineering Company in Busia County, the bridge connects a region that has historically lacked government investment and development. Around a dozen people died on the river after a boat capsized while attempting to cross in 2014.
