MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have designated opening day starter Jhoulys Chacín for assignment.
The Brewers announced the move on Saturday before playing Arizona.

DENVER (AP) — San Diego infielder Wil Myers has a cut on his nose after taking a groundball to the face while practicing at his new position.
Myers was fielding grounders at third base during batting practice Wednesday prior to a game against the Colorado Rockies when a ball went over his glove and struck him. Myers fell to the dirt as teammates rushed in to check on him. Myers left the field holding a towel over his face with a trainer near his side.
CHICAGO (AP) — Jon Lester offered no clues. When it comes to his mid-summer swoon, there's only one thing for the veteran left-hander to do.
"Figure it out. A little rut right now," he said. "Keep grinding."
Lester was hit hard again and the San Diego Padres also battered Chicago's bullpen on their way to a 10-6 victory over the Cubs on Sunday.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves' bid for a combined no-hitter has ended as reliever Shane Carle allowed a single to San Diego's Cory Spangenberg with one out in the seventh inning.
Starter Julio Teheran was removed after allowing no hits through six innings. He struck out a season-high 11, walked three and threw 95 pitches Sunday.
Teheran was activated from the 10-day disabled list on Saturday. He had been out since June 5 with a sore right thumb.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Freddie Freeman was a triple shy of the cycle when Atlanta manager Brian Snitker took out his first baseman because the Braves were beating the San Diego Padres so badly.
Freeman was OK with the move, because otherwise he would have faced Padres infielder Cory Spangenberg, who pitched the ninth inning of the Braves' 14-1 blowout win.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — After beating up on the other last-place teams in the NL last week, the San Diego Padres kept rolling when they opened a series against the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves.
Cory Spangenberg homered and tripled, Raffy Lopez had a homer among his career-high three hits and Eric Hosmer and Franmil Reyes also went deep to lead San Diego over the Braves 11-4 on Monday night. Clayton Richard (4-6) pitched seven strong innings.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The San Diego Padres squeezed out a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Freddy Galvis drove in the go-ahead run in a four-run ninth inning with San Diego's second successful squeeze bunt of the game, and the Padres rallied to beat the Pirates 8-5 Sunday for their third win of the four-game series.
Pittsburgh had a 5-4 lead into ninth when Jose Pirela and Christian Villaneuva singled off Felipe Vazquez (2-1).
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Carlos Martinez was having no problem hitting 98 and 99 mph with his fastball in the eighth and ninth innings.
It was a message, all right.
"I think he was trying to show us he was still OK," manager Mike Matheny said after Martinez threw a three-hitter and struck out 10 to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-0 victory Monday over the San Diego Padres.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Cory Spangenberg had an impressive game in the San Diego Padres' 7-4 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night, with three hits, including a homer, and three runs scored.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Travis Wood settled in quickly with the San Diego Padres.
Acquired Monday in a six-player trade with Kansas City, Wood picked up on the energy of a young team that plays hard — even if it is mired in fourth place in the NL West — and got reacquainted with former teammates with the Chicago Cubs, Clayton Richard and Matt Szczur.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — It used to be a Madison Bumgarner start meant the San Francisco Giants almost assuredly would find the win column.
Now, still without a 2017 victory, MadBum just wants to get back in a groove and stop giving up costly home runs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Austin Hedges got excited when he saw the bunt sign with the game on the line. That plan didn't work out, but the San Diego Padres backstop still came through.
Hedges hit a pair of solo homers and had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the ninth, Jose Pirela also went deep and the Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Friday night.
CLEVELAND (AP) — While the Indians remain concerned about manager Terry Francona's health, the defending AL champions have plenty of smaller worries.
They aren't stringing hits together. They aren't winning at home. They aren't beating National League teams.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Corey Kluber put on a record-breaking performance Tuesday night and still lost 1-0 to the San Diego Padres.
The ace right-hander struck out 10 in eight innings — setting a Cleveland Indians mark with five consecutive double-digit strikeout games. But the 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner received little help from his offense or defense.
Cory Spangenberg drove in the only run with a groundout, and six San Diego pitchers combined on a five-hitter.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Luis Perdomo is making up for the odd beginning to his season.
Perdomo pitched five scoreless innings and Hunter Renfroe and Cory Spangenberg contributed two RBIs apiece to help the San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 7-4 on Wednesday night.
San Diego's Carlos Asuaje and Erick Aybar had three hits each.
CHICAGO (AP) — A dash of power, followed by patience at the plate, paid off for the San Diego Padres.
Erick Aybar hit a tying home run in the sixth inning, Luis Torrens walked with the bases loaded against Koji Uehara in the eighth and the Padres stopped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Wednesday.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — One home run in extra innings wasn't enough for the San Diego Padres, so they cranked out a couple more Saturday.
It's been that kind of weekend at Miller Park.
Cory Spangenberg and Chase d'Arnaud each hit solo homers in the 11th inning, lifting the Padres over the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 in yet another slugfest.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Ryan Hanigan made a big impression in his first game with the Rockies.
The veteran catcher was summoned Wednesday and led Colorado on Thursday with an RBI infield single in the 11th inning of a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres.
"What a game he had coming in from our Triple-A (Albuquerque) team and contributing with a veteran game behind the plate with a rookie pitcher and multiple relief pitchers that he hasn't caught," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "That is not easy."
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — With a timely swing in the 12th inning, Wil Myers turned his frustrating day into a fantastic one.
Myers hit a three-run homer in the top of the 12th to send the San Diego Padres past the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Sunday.
His seventh home run and second in two games came on a 1-0 fastball from reliever George Kontos (0-2). Cory Spangenberg singled against Kontos leading off the inning, and Erick Aybar singled two batters later.
