ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Gov. Larry Hogan says his administration has had preliminary discussions with Amazon, and he looks forward to meeting with the company again about potentially expanding to Maryland.
Hogan was asked at a news conference Thursday about the company's new headquarters, after Amazon announced it has abandoned plans for a big new headquarters in New York that would have brought 25,000 jobs to the city.

Wounded police officer returns home after months of rehab
COVINGTON, Ga. (AP) — A police officer in Georgia who was shot in the head has returned home after months of physical rehabilitation.
News outlets report Covington police Officer Matt Cooper finished his inpatient brain injury rehab program Wednesday and got to go home.
Police say officers responded to a report of shoplifting at an area Walmart in September and three suspects fled, shooting at officers.
Boy looking for hamster dies as car plunges into garage
NEWTON, Ga. (AP) — A 12-year-old Georgia boy is dead after a car left a road and smashed into a garage.
WSB-TV reports Braden Stevenson died after being hit at his grandmother's home in Covington while looking for his missing hamster with a friend.
A driver lost control of a car for reasons that are unclear and pinned the boy against the wall. The friend, Lucas McWilliams, was also severely injured.

Body found in Georgia river identified as missing woman
COVINGTON, Ga. (AP) — A woman whose body was discovered in a river near Atlanta has been identified as a person with autism who was reported missing last month, miles away.
The Newton County Sheriff's Office said Friday on its Facebook page that she was 23-year-old Shanequa Quanee Sullivan of Atlanta. The agency said it's not clear how she died, and an investigation is ongoing.
Her body was found March 4 by a fisherman in the Yellow River.

2 charged after leading police on car chase
COVINGTON, Va. (AP) — State police say two Virginia residents with outstanding warrants have been arrested after leading a state trooper on a car chase.
Authorities say the trooper responded to a suspicious vehicle call in Bath County on Saturday afternoon and tried to make a traffic stop.
The driver of the car refused to stop and led the trooper on a chase, during which the suspect's vehicle twice struck the trooper's cruiser before crashing into a bridge.

‘Drone Zone’ in southwest Virginia gets federal grant money
COVINGTON, Va. (AP) — An effort to convert a former primary school in southwest Virginia into a drone research and recreational facility is getting a boost.
U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine announced Tuesday that the Appalachian Regional Commission had awarded the city of Covington $100,000 for what's being called the Alleghany County Drone Zone. Man accused of carrying stolen firearm into theater pleads
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Georgia man accused of entering a Pennsylvania movie theater carrying what authorities said was a stolen firearm and ammunition has pleaded guilty to federal firearms law violations.
Twenty-two-year-old William Gossett of Covington pleaded to being a felon in possession of a gun and ammunition. He is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 14.

Covington police Capt. Craig Treadwell tells local media that 46-year-old Marcus Allan Pitts was charged with aggravated assault after he shot 33-year-old Terence Lee Lennox in an incident Saturday morning. Lennox was taken to an Atlanta hospital in critical condition.
Concerned citizen shoots fleeing suspect, faces aggravated assault charge
COVINGTON — The Covington Police Department is investigating a Saturday morning incident in which a citizen apparently attempting to help police — shot a fleeing suspect, leaving him critically wounded.
According to Capt. Craig Treadwell, police officers were pursuing a man driving recklessly in an SUV Saturday morning when the suspect jumped from the vehicle at Newton Plaza and fled on foot. At that point, said Treadwell, another motorist intervened.
