LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Nico Evans led the Mountain West in rushing last season. Then the fifth-year senior was gone.
Wyoming's backfield has only gotten thinner from there.
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Talk to Raghib Ismail Jr. about his first season at Wyoming, and the Cowboys' receiver will be perfectly blunt: It was disappointing.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — It wasn't broken, so there was no need to fix anything.
That's essentially the way Wyoming coach Craig Bohl viewed his decision when looking for a new defensive...

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — A former University of Wyoming defensive end faces a sex assault charge stemming from an off-campus encounter a day after the team's last game of the season.
The Laramie Boomerang reports that a case against former player Carl Granderson was filed in Albany County Circuit Court this week.
What might Wyoming football look like in 2019?
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Craig Bohl has raised the expectations.
Five years into his tenure at Wyoming, Bohl has led the Cowboys to three straight non-losing seasons. He inherited a program that had two straight losing seasons heading into the 2014 season and had two more before Wyoming broke through under Bohl with a Mountain West Mountain Division title in 2016.
Wyoming misses out on bowl invitation
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming will not be heading to a postseason bowl this season after having gone to a bowl the last two years.
The Cowboys finished with a bowl eligible 6-6 record this season after winning their last four games but did not receive a bowl invitation. Six other Mountain West Conference teams that had better records did receive bowl invites.
Wyoming runs over New Mexico 31-3 to become bowl eligible
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Xazavian Valladay and Nico Evans combined for more than 300 yards rushing and three touchdowns for Wyoming as the Cowboys became bowl eligible Saturday with a 31-3 win over New Mexico.
Valladay had 192 yards and two scores, and Evans, who did not practice all week because of a right ankle injury went for 142 yards and one touchdown.
Wyoming football player suspended
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming coach Craig Bohl says defensive tackle Youhanna Ghaifan (yo-HAWN'-uh guh-FAWN') has been suspended indefinitely after Ghaifan was charged with two misdemeanor offenses in Fort Collins, Colorado.
A news release from the Wyoming athletic department said Ghaifan was issued a summons by Fort Collins police for misdemeanor false imprisonment and misdemeanor harassment on Friday morning.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — The question everybody is asking regarding Wyoming's quarterback situation won't be answered until the Cowboys tee it up against Colorado State on Friday night.
Wyoming searches for balance, efficiency on offense
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming hasn't had a problem running the ball with Nico Evans.
The Cowboys' senior running back has gashed defenses when he's been on the field. Of the four games Evans has played — he missed two with bruised ribs — he's rushed for at least 140 yards in three of them while his 7.8 yards per carry is tops in the Mountain West.
Balancing out Evans' production through the air has been the season-long issue.
Freshman Gunner Gentry could see playing time at Wyoming
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — A signature Gentry catch was on display Monday morning at Wyoming football practice. A tattooed single-digit receiver went up and made a 50-50 ball look routine. Cowboy fans have gotten accustomed to those catches over the years, though the accompanying numbers are a tad bigger now. Five, instead of 4, on the jersey. Six-foot-3, instead of 6-2, on the roster.
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — When asked about his motivation for running a more physical camp this fall, Craig Bohl did not beat around the bush.
"We need to run the ball better," the Wyoming head coach said.
UW receiver Eberhardt begins fall camp with scholarship
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Ayden Eberhardt is on a roll. In spring camp, he stood out in practice to coaches and on television as Josh Allen's only Pro Day receiving target who was still an active Cowboy.
Then, this summer, he got a text from head coach Craig Bohl.
Wyoming dons pads in fall practice
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming puts on full pads for the first time Wednesday as the Cowboys continue fall practice in Laramie.
The Cowboys are now only 25 days away from the season opener at New Mexico State on Aug. 25.
Head coach Craig Bohl says the practices are starting to wear down some of the players but overall he says the team is in really good health.
Wyoming linebacker suspended for 1 game
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming coach Craig Bohl says linebacker Cassh Maluia (mahl-uh-WEE'-uh) will serve a one-game suspension this fall after his recent arrest for driving under the influence.
In addition, Bohl says Maluia must also go through mandatory counseling, complete the AWARE training program on campus and complete 50 hours of community service.
The coach says this is a learning opportunity for Maluia as well as the rest of the team.
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming coach Craig Bohl says there's a chance that running back Trey Woods will be able to play this fall.
Bohl previously had said that Woods, who led the Cowboys in rushing in 2017, would miss the upcoming season with a shoulder injury that kept him out for most of spring camp.
Wyoming releases depth chart with new No. 1 quarterback
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Redshirt freshman Tyler Vander Waal is listed No. 1 on the final spring depth chart as Wyoming seeks to find a new quarterback to replace NFL bound Josh Allen.
Vander Waal was ranked ahead of senior Nick Smith for the starting job although head coach Craig Bohl emphasized that the quarterback competition, like all other positions on the team, will continue into the fall.
LARAMIE — Wyoming barely had enough running backs to put on a spring game. Only two running backs, Nico Evans and Mike Green II, took carries in Saturday’s exhibition, which the Gold team won 10-8. They made the most of it.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota State's Chris Klieman has signed a two-year contract extension with the perennial Football Championship Subdivision powerhouse.
Klieman is entering his fifth season leading the Bison, who have won six of the last seven FCS titles. He was an assistant at the Fargo school for three years before he was promoted to head coach when Craig Bohl moved to Wyoming.
Wyoming football enjoying unprecedented level of offensive line depth
LARAMIE — Tuesday, Wyoming head football coach Craig Bohl said that the Cowboys’ depth on the offensive line is the best its been since he arrived in Laramie.
To say that offensive line coach Scott Fuchs agrees would be an understatement.
LARAMIE — The Wyoming football team's offense has spent the last year playing second fiddle to the Wyoming defense. The Cowboys forced more takeaways than any other team in the Football Bowl Subdivision last year and just eight defenses allowed fewer points per game. Meanwhile, the offense was the fifth worst in the nation in 2017 in yards per play.
For much of this spring, head coach Craig Bohl said Tuesday, that hierarchy has remained in place. But not Saturday.
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Actions speak louder than words.
So while Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl spoke last fall about the physical potential of cornerback C.J. Coldon, the biggest proof that the Cowboys' coaching staff is confident in its group of young cornerbacks came this spring.
Wyoming returns only one cornerback from its 2017 defense, Tyler Hall. Nonetheless, the staff chose to move Hall to nickel back this spring.
Wyoming receiver Ayden Eberhardt hoping Pro Day experience jumpstarts strong spring camp
LARAMIE — Ayden Eberhardt is hoping to extend his 15 minutes of fame. The Wyoming wide receiver, who will be a sophomore in the fall, was the only current Cowboy to participate in quarterback Josh Allen’s throwing session at Wyoming’s Pro Day last week.
It was a big stage for a receiver who has yet to record a collegiate reception, as both ESPN and NFL Network broadcast live from Wyoming’s Indoor Practice Facility.
Wyoming football assistants Mike Bath, Gordie Haug adjust to new coaching roles
LARAMIE — Spring camp is often a time for college football players to undergo position changes, and this one is no exception for Wyoming football. Tyler Hall has moved from cornerback to nickel back, running back Milo Hall swung out to receiver, and Jahmari Moore and Austin Lopez have moved from the defensive side of the ball to fullback.
Smith, Vander Waal vying for starting Wyoming QB job
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Nick Smith was part of a quarterback competition in Spring 2016. He and Josh Allen, both of whom had played in a backup role for Wyoming the year before, battled for the starting quarterback spot in spring camp.
Smith lost that battle, something that probably stings a little less in hindsight, considering Allen is now a potential top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
It was announced Tuesday that Gordie Haug, who had been the director of recruiting for the Wyoming football program, has been promoted to assistant coach.
Haug will be the Cowboys' 10th assistant coach and will coach the running backs alongside current running backs coach Mike Bath.
BOISE, Idaho — It’s official.
Wyoming junior quarterback Josh Allen will forgo his final season at Wyoming for the 2018 NFL Draft, he announced after Wyoming’s 37-14 Potato Bowl win against Central Michigan on Friday.
“I will be declaring for the 2018 NFL Draft,” Allen said from atop an on-field stage, at the urging of his teammates.
Allen was named the game’s MVP after completing 11-of-19 passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns.
Bowl season gives Wyoming a look at redshirts, something that rule change could increase
LARAMIE — The past few years, the conversation regarding which college football players will play in bowl games has centered around players with NFL hopes who are sitting out to protect their futures. In the coming years, the talk might become more about bowl-game participants who are playing in their first games all year.
Wyoming QB Nick Smith ready if Josh Allen can’t play
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Nick Smith has the mentality of a backup quarterback down pat. Prepare as if you're going to play, because you're always one play away.
But with the status of Josh Allen's shoulder remaining up in the air for the third straight game, maintaining that mindset would be a challenge for anyone.

Southern California prep defensive back Rome Weber verbally commits to Wyoming
Wyoming really went the extra mile in recruiting Rome Weber. The defensive back from San Bernardino, California, verbally committed to Wyoming on Monday, the same day Cowboys head coach Craig Bohl visited Cajon (California) High School. That wasn’t the only city on Bohl’s itinerary.
“He came to see me, and then he drove all the way to Vegas to see my parents,” Weber said. “That’s not a close place to drive to. So that meant a lot to me.”
Illinois receiver Camron Donatlan verbally commits to Wyoming football, track and field
Camron Donatlan shouldn’t have any problems going up for 50-50 balls as a wide receiver for the Wyoming football team. The West Aurora (Illinois) High School student-athlete, who verbally committed to Wyoming on Sunday, will compete in the high jump as well as on the football team for Wyoming.
Wyoming at San Jose State: Three things we learned
Junior backup quarterback Nick Smith made his second start of the season in place of injured starter Josh Allen (shoulder). Unlike a week ago, when Wyoming fell to Fresno State at home, Allen did warm up before the game, throwing some longer passes. But was only available as emergency relief, head coach Craig Bohl said.
Wyoming QB Allen still day-to-day on injury
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming coach Craig Bohl says quarterback Josh Allen continues to make progress in treating his injured right shoulder but his status remains day-to-day.
Allen injured his throwing shoulder during the Nov. 11 game at Air Force. He sat out last weekend's home loss to Fresno State.
Bohl says he's hopeful that Allen can play in this Saturday's season finale at San Jose State.
LARAMIE — It takes more than one player to replace a quarterback like Josh Allen. So with Wyoming's junior starter sidelined Saturday for the first time since 2015, the Cowboys dialed up some new plays offensively to lend a hand to backup Nick Smith.
Wyoming used a wildcat formation at times in the 13-7 loss to Fresno State, snapping the ball directly to receiver Austin Conway or tight end Austin Fort.
Nick Smith starts in place of injured Josh Allen at quarterback for Wyoming
LARAMIE — Wyoming backup quarterback Nick Smith, a junior, started Saturday's game for Wyoming against Fresno State. Injured starter Josh Allen did not take the field Saturday for pre-game warmups before the Cowboys' noon game against Fresno State.
LARAMIE — Wyoming football's 2017 senior class doesn't light up the stat sheet the way the one that preceded it did. Last season, the Cowboys' high-flying offense was buttressed by seniors at receiver, tight end and center. This year, fullback Drew Van Maanen's six catches for 93 yards are the only offensive statistics recorded by a senior.
Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen has AC sprain in right shoulder, according to mother’s Facebook
LARAMIE — Junior quarterback Josh Allen suffered an AC sprain in his right shoulder, according to a Facebook post from his mother Sunday night. According to the post from Lavonne Allen, Josh Allen will have X-rays on Monday.
Wyoming QB Josh Allen has injured throwing shoulder
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen, who has been viewed as a possible high NFL draft pick next year, injured his right shoulder during the Cowboys' win over Air Force.
Coach Craig Bohl said Monday it's too early to say whether Allen will miss this weekend's game against Fresno State.
"It may come down to a game-time decision," he said.
Bohl described the injury as involving "soft tissue" and said Allen is receiving treatment. He described his status as day-to-day.
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — What do you want first, the good news or the bad news?
The good news for Wyoming fans: Their Cowboys were the winners Saturday night at Falcon Stadium, beating Front Range opponent Air Force 28-14 for a much-needed divisional win. The bad news: They suffered a loss that could have significance reaching far beyond the outcome of a single game.
Josh Allen left the game four plays into the second half with an injury that affected his ability to throw properly.
Tight-knit freshman group exceeding expectations this season for Wyoming football
LARAMIE — Making the leap from high school to college isn't easy. There's the adjustment to being away from home for the first time. There's the reality of leaving the top of the high school totem pole for the dregs of freshman status. There's a new campus to navigate. There's laundry.
It can be a lot for an 18-year-old to handle. Throw in the commitment of playing Division I football and it becomes all the more demanding.
But you wouldn't know it from Wyoming football's 2017 recruiting class.
Wyoming kicker comes through in rainy and snowy conditions
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — The Bronze Boot wouldn't have ended up in the hands of Wyoming football team Saturday night if not for the right cleat of Cooper Rothe.
Rothe, Wyoming's sophomore kicker, set a career high with three made field goals, and the Cowboys needed every one of them in their 16-13 win over Colorado State. The fact that they came on a night cloaked in rain and snow made Rothe's game all the more impressive.
The Firebaugh Files: Josh Allen, Wyoming made storybook ascent in 2016 season
Describing Josh Allen's 2016 season comes with the risk of sounding trite. Allen's ascent to the national stage as a redshirt sophomore was subject to myth-making statements and storybook cliches.
