MILWAUKEE (AP) — Craig Counsell and the Milwaukee Brewers relied on their bullpen all season long.
Those hard-throwing relievers finally ran out of gas in the NL Championship Series.

LEADING OFF: Dodgers-Brewers in Game 7 of NLCS, Red Sox wait
A look at what's happening around the majors today:

Los Angeles will start 24-year-old rookie Walker Buehler, who showed flashes of brilliance this season but has not fared well in his two playoff starts. Jhoulys Chacin is set to pitch for Milwaukee — the journeyman had a career year and has done even better in the postseason, pitching 10 1/3 shutout innings in two starts.

It comes on Friday night when Miley will try to help the Brewers stave off elimination, down 3-2 to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
After Counsell uses Miley as decoy, Brewers ’pen cracks late
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wade Miley threw just five pitches in Game 5 of the NL Championship Series before Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell emerged from the Dodger Stadium dugout and abruptly removed his starter.
Oddly enough, five innings after this extraordinary bit of subterfuge, Counsell probably waited a bit too long to go to his bullpen again.
Power outage: Brewers’ bats struggle in 13-inning loss
LOS ANGELES (AP) — For the first time since the Milwaukee Brewers began their incredible late-season surge, their bats went cold enough to lose.

The Brewers have chosen Wade Miley to start in Game 2 on Saturday, meaning that Milwaukee will open the NLCS with two straight lefties.
October staffing: Sale, Kershaw, aces become bullpen aces
Chris Sale is all set to start Game 1 at Fenway Park. If the Boston Red Sox later need him for middle relief, he's ready. Or a setup spot, sure.
"I mean, it's postseason baseball. You have to be prepared for anything," the All-Star lefty said.
Especially when it comes to pitching, particularly after seeing the likes of Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer and other All-Star aces working in unusual roles during recent Octobers.
Weekend Sports in Brief
DENVER (AP) — Wade Miley pitched masterfully into the fifth inning before turning it over to a lights-out Milwaukee bullpen, 38-year-old catcher Erik Kratz kept up his torrid hitting and the Brewers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-0 in Game 3 on a cool, misty Sunday to sweep their NL Division Series.
Rockies’ Marquez in Game 3 of NLDS; Miley likely for Brewers
MILWAUKEE (AP) — German Marquez will start Game 3 for the Colorado Rockies in the NL Division Series against the Brewers.
Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said he will likely turn to Wade Miley in the third game on Sunday unless the left-hander is needed out of the bullpen in Game 2.

Marquez going in Game 3 likely means that Kyle Freeland will start Game 4 if necessary on Monday at Coors Field.

OPENER FOR THE OPENER
The Brewers will begin their NL Division Series against the Rockies with a bullpen game at Miller Park. Manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday he had not decided on the order of his relievers. Bullpen day catches on as Rockies, Brewers open NLDS series
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The bullpen day has come to October.
The Milwaukee Brewers plan to open their first postseason series in seven years with a reliever. Manager Craig Counsell hadn't decided who would go first when the Brewers host the Colorado Rockies in Game 1 of the NL Division Series on Thursday.

"Just trying to help the boys out any way you can," Yelich said. "A lot of guys came through in some big situations for us. That was a lot of fun tonight."

Brewers use home run barrage to gain ground in NL Central
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A long rain delay did not dampen the Milwaukee Brewers' hopes of catching the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.
Travis Shaw, Mike Moustakas and Erik Kratz homered during a six-run sixth inning, and the Brewers rallied for an 8-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Milwaukee trailed 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning when rain stopped play for two hours and 14 minutes.
Brewers still struggling to score, fall to Reds 3-1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers' inconsistent offense couldn't offset Chase Anderson's continuing home run struggles.

Milwaukee moved within two games of the first-place Cubs in the NL Central heading into a three-game series at Chicago.
Aguilar’s 2-run double helps Brewers beat Giants 4-2
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jesus Aguilar has cooled off some since the All-Star break, yet still brings in clutch runs.

Brewers add bullpen help, acquire Cedeno from White Sox
CHICAGO (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers added bullpen help for the final stretch, acquiring veteran Xavier Cedeno from the Chicago White Sox for two minor leaguers on Friday.
Cedeno is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 33 appearances after signing with Chicago as a minor league free agent in January. The left-hander is 10-7 with a 3.81 ERA in eight seasons with Houston, Washington, Tampa Bay and the White Sox.
