CHICAGO (AP) — Courtney Vandersloot scored 20 points and handed out 15 of Chicago's WNBA record-tying 35 assists to help the Sky beat the Connecticut Sun 97-86 on Friday night.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Connecticut Sun have traded guard Alex Bentley to the Atlanta Dream for Layshia Clarendon and a second-round pick in 2019 on Monday.
Bentley is averaging 10 points for the Sun this season as the team's sixth player. The former All-Star was drafted by the Atlanta Dream in 2013 with the No. 13 pick before being traded to Connecticut as part of a three-team deal with Washington in 2014.
NEW YORK (AP) — Connecticut's balanced attack on offense this season is causing problems for opponents and the Sun have rolled to the best record in the league.
On a given night, any of coach Curt Miller's players can lead the team on offense. The coach says the team doesn't have an alpha dog, but the "pack" philosophy as Miller calls is working.
The Sun are 7-1 and sit atop The Associated Press power poll for the first time.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Shekinna Stricklen was all smiles after hitting her first career winning shot.
She had a four-point play at the buzzer to give the Connecticut Sun an 88-86 victory over the New York Liberty on Thursday night.
"I've never hit a game-winner, that was my first time," she said.
Stricklen didn't start for the first time this season as Sun coach Curt Miller decided to go with a bigger lineup. She didn't pout and was ready when her number was called at the end of the game.
Washington and Connecticut are off to fast starts this season, using their depth and favorable schedules to sit atop the WNBA.
The Mystics are 4-0 for the first time in franchise history while the Sun opened the year with three straight wins for the first time in a decade. The schedule has helped both teams as they have combined to play six of their seven games at home.
Nicki Collen is headed south for her first job as a head coach.
After two years as an assistant to Curt Miller with the Connecticut Sun, Collen is taking over in Atlanta.
"I am humbled at the opportunity to become the next head coach of the Atlanta Dream and incredibly proud to be associated with a league that empowers women in such a positive way," Collen said Monday.
She has been a supporter of the WNBA since it started, even trying out for the Detroit Shock after graduating college.
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — WNBA coach of the year Curt Miller has received a contract extension from the Connecticut Sun.
Miller, who also serves as the team's general manager, was heading into the last year of a three-year deal.
The team announced the new deal Tuesday but did not disclose financial terms. The contract is designed to keep Miller in Connecticut through the 2021 season.
Connecticut's Curt Miller is the WNBA's Coach of the Year and the Sun's Jonquel Jones earned the league's most improved player award on Sunday, the league announced.
Miller led the Sun to a fourth-place finish in the standings after the team lost Chiney Ogwumike to an injury before the season. Connecticut lost five of its first six games before winning 17 of the next 21. He received 36 votes from a national panel of 40 sportswriters and broadcasters.
NEW YORK (AP) — Curt Miller has led the Connecticut Sun to the top of the Eastern Conference.
Now he'll get a chance to coach the East in the All-Star Game on Saturday. Miller will replace New York's Bill Laimbeer, who backed out for personal reasons.
"I wish Bill could do it," Miller said. "We're trying to honor Bill and his staff the best we can. We're going to try and have fun and come back with no injuries. No one gives the East certainly the due and credit that we play good basketball."
The clock was ticking down as Los Angeles was getting ready to make its first pick in the draft last year. The phone rang and Connecticut was on the line trying to acquire the pick to draft Jonquel Jones.
The teams had been talking off and on for the previous few weeks, but a trade had three minutes to get completed. Sun general manager Chris Sienko had offered Chelsea Gray and the team's pick for the No. 6 pick. The Sun really wanted Jonquel Jones.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Connecticut Sun have made the most of a brutal early season schedule.
Connecticut spent 17 of 19 days on the road and had to play Minnesota three times in the first 10 games and yet the Sun are sitting at .500. They started the season 0-4 and have won five of six despite missing starters Morgan Tuck — knee bruise — and Alex Bentley — EuroBasket tournament. Connecticut also has been without its top post reserve as Lynetta Kizer is dealing with a back issue.
