He had lost in his last two appearances in December, but kept himself ready.
"Just keeping good habits in practice, trying to stay focused," he said. "The last couple games for me were tough personally, so this is a good way to bounce back."

TORONTO (AP) — Alex Ovechkin was at his high-scoring best — again.
"Sometimes you are just feeling it," the Russian forward said.
Ovechkin had a hat trick to help the Washington Capitals beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Saturday night.
Ovechkin scored two of his three goals in the opening period. Jakub Vrana also scored, and Braden Holtby made 27 saves for his 13th victory of the season.

BOSTON (AP) — The Toronto Maple Leafs made this a lot easier for Curtis McElhinney with a quick lead. The backup goalie took care of things from there.
McElhinney stopped 38 shots, Mitchell Marner and James van Riemsdyk each had a goal and an assist and the Maple Leafs beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 Saturday night to complete a sweep of the home-and-home series.
Toronto — Tomas Tatar didn't seem overly bothered by it, being the regular season is only seven games old.
No need to stress, yet.
But in that seventh game Wednesday, a convincing 6-3 Toronto victory over the Red Wings, Tatar finally got into the goal-scoring column.
Tatar put back his own rebound in the second period past Toronto goalie Curtis McElhinney. Just like that, Tatar was on the scoresheet, after a quiet six games.

TORONTO (AP) — Curtis McElhinney got all the help he needed in his season debut.
McElhinney made 30 saves and the Toronto Maple Leafs scored four times in the first period in a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.
Starting in place of Frederik Andersen, McElhinney stopped 15 shots in the third period to hold off the Red Wings.
