Former Czech Republic defender Repka gets jail for fraud
PRAGUE (AP) — Former Czech Republic defender Tomas Repka has been convicted of fraud and sentenced to 15 months in jail.
The Prague 6 district court ruled that the 45-year-old Repka sold a luxury car to a woman even though he didn't own it. The former West Ham and Fiorentina player had been renting the car at the time.
In a deal Repka signed, he promised to return the money if the ownership was not transferred to the woman, but he didn't do that.
Kvitova testifies at trial of suspect in knife attack
PRAGUE (AP) — Australian Open finalist Petra Kvitova testified in the Czech Republic on Tuesday at the trial of the man who allegedly knifed her in her home.
After the December 2016 attack in her home in Prostejov, Kvitova had surgery on injuries to her playing left hand. It took the tennis star more than five months to recover.
Her testimony was requested by a lawyer for the suspect, the 33-year-old Radim Zondra.

SOLITUDE, Utah (AP) — Eva Samkova of the Czech Republic added a world championship snowboardcross title to her list of accomplishments on a day when favorite Lindsey Jacobellis didn't advance to the big final.
Samkova beat British rider Charlotte Bankes on Friday in the women's final, with Michela Moioli of Italy taking third. A five-time winner in the event at worlds, Jacobellis of Stratton Mountain, Vermont, didn't make it out of the semifinals. She won the small final to take fifth.

VICTORIA, British Columbia (AP) — Northeastern's Tyler Madden scored twice and Jason Robertson had a goal and an assist as the United States closed out the preliminary round of the world junior hockey championship Monday night with a 4-1 win over Finland.
The Americans finished second in Group B behind unbeaten Sweden.

Death toll in Czech mine explosion increases to 13
PRAGUE (AP) — The death toll in a methane explosion at a black coal mine in northeastern Czech Republic has increased to 13, a mining company said Friday.
OKD mining company spokesman Ivo Celechovsky said that 12 of the dead were Polish nationals while one was Czech, correcting information given earlier that said there were 11 Poles and two Czechs.
A further 10 miners were injured in the explosion Thursday afternoon at the CSM mine near the town of Karvina.

Czech mine explosion kills at least 5, leaves 8 missing
PRAGUE (AP) — A spokesman for a mining company in the Czech Republic says a methane explosion inside a coal mine in the country's northeast has killed at least five miners.
Ivo Celechovsky of the OKD mining company says at least 10 miners are injured and eight others are missing after the explosion Thursday afternoon at the CSA mine near the town of Karvina.
He says teams are searching for the missing miners.
Czech government office stops using Huawei mobile phones
PRAGUE (AP) — The Czech Republic's prime minister has ordered his government office to stop using mobile phones by Chinese telecoms company Huawei.
Tuesday's announcement by Prime Minister Andrej Babis comes a day after the country's National Cyber and Information Security Agency warned that the hardware and software made by Huawei and another Chinese telecommunications company, ZTE, pose a security threat.

Czech spy agency says it paralyzed Russian spying network
PRAGUE (AP) — The head of the Czech Republic's counter-intelligence service says his agency broke a Russian spying network earlier this year and completely paralyzed its activities.
Michal Koudelka also says the agency known as BIS prevented dozens of Russian and Chinese spies from operating on Czech territory in last five years.
Koudelka's statement Friday comes a day after President Milos Zeman dismissed BIS' annual report.

PRAGUE (AP) — Barbora Strycova and Katerina Siniakova won their singles for the Czech Republic to take a commanding 2-0 over the defending champion United States in the Fed Cup final on Saturday.
Strycova rallied from a set down to defeat Sofia Kenin 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4.
Siniakova stretched the advantage by dispatching Alison Riske 6-3, 7-6 (2) to the delight of more than 14,000 fans at Prague's O2 Arena.
Czech star Safarova retiring after Australian Open
PRAGUE (AP) — Former French Open finalist Lucie Safarova will retire after the Australian Open in January due to health concerns and will not play in any tournaments before then.
The 31-year-old Safarova announced her decision on Saturday in Prague before the Fed Cup final between the Czech Republic and United States.
"I had a great career but my health doesn't allow me to continue," Safarova said.
She helped the Czechs win four Fed Cup titles but is not in the current team.

Czech lawmakers to debate bill to allow same-sex marriage
PRAGUE (AP) — The lower house of the Czech Parliament is set to begin debating a bill that could give same-sex couples the right to marry.
