ATLANTA (AP) — Shai Werts threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third and Wesley Fields ran for 151 yards and a score as Georgia Southern beat Georgia State for just the second time, 35-14 in a Sun Belt regular season finale on Saturday.
Georgia Southern rolled to a 28-0 lead through three quarters to snap a streak of three-straight losses to the Panthers.
App State beats Georgia State, sets up showdown with Troy
BOONE, N.C. (AP) — Zac Thomas was 20 of 24 for 282 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions to help Appalachian State beat Georgia State 45-17 on Saturday.
The Mountaineers (8-2, 6-1 Sun Belt Conference) won their third straight and kept their hopes alive to win a share of the East Division title, closing the season next Saturday against Troy, which is 7-0 in conference play.
Jones throws Texas State past Georgia State 40-31
ATLANTA (AP) — Willie Jones III completed 21 of 26 passes for 325 yards and two touchdowns and Texas Southern created enough distance to hold off Georgia State for a 40-31 win on Saturday.
Texas State (3-6, 1-4 Sun Belt) led 13-10 at halftime before Jones took over. He threw an 11-yard score to Javen Banks to increase the lead to 10. The 18-yard scoring drive was set up when the Bobcats recovered Penny Hart's fumble of a punt early in the second half.
Big plays dominate in Coastal Carolina’s 37-34 victory
ATLANTA (AP) — In a game full of big-play touchdowns, it was Alex James' 3-yard run and Massimo Biscardi's 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that rallied Coastal Carolina to a 37-34 win over Georgia State on Saturday.
James' TD run capped a 12-play, 57-yard drive with 9:46 remaining. Biscardi's tiebreaking field goal came with just under three minutes left and was set up by a 48-yard, Fred Payton-to-CJ Marable completion.
Barker, Troy east past Georgia State 37-20
TROY, Ala. (AP) — Kaleb Barker was 9-of-10 passing for 136 yards and two touchdowns — all in the first half — and Troy cruised by Georgia State 37-20 on Thursday night to extend the nation's third-longest conference winning streak.
Troy (5-1, 3-0 Sun Belt) has won nine straight leagues games, trailing UCF and Oklahoma.
Ellington leads Georgia St. to 46-14 romp over UL-Monroe
ATLANTA (AP) — Dan Ellington threw for one touchdown and ran for another as Georgia State opened Southern Conference play with a 46-14 romp over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday afternoon to halt a three-game skid.
Ellington was 15-of-18 passing for 179 yards and ran for 64. The first-year starting quarterback threw for 170 yards in the first half, completing 12 of 13 attempts. Freshman Seth Paige racked up 145 total yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Tra Barnett rushed for 64 yards and a TD.
