NC State hires ex-West Virginia defensive coordinator Gibson
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State has added former West Virginia defensive coordinator Tony Gibson to its coaching staff.
Coach Dave Doeren said Sunday that Gibson will be the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.
Gibson helped develop linebacker David Long into the Big 12 defensive player of the year in 2018 and led the Mountaineers' defense for the past five years. He left West Virginia during the head coaching transition from Dana Holgorsen to Neal Brown.
Brown brings lighthearted coaching style to West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — New West Virginia coach Neal Brown's lighthearted approach to football is forever captured in a 2016 dance video at Troy.
Brown dabbed while his players and assistants showed off their moves in the video that was part of a spring competition among Troy athletic coaching staffs.

West Virginia hired Troy's Neal Brown on Saturday to coach the Mountaineers, landing the youngest of six coaches in the FBS who have won at least 10 games each of the last three seasons.
The 38-year-old Brown signed a six-year, $19.05 million contract and replaces Dana Holgorsen, who left West Virginia to become Houston's coach.
AP sources: West Virginia, Troy’s Neal Brown close to deal
West Virginia and Troy's Neal Brown are completing a deal to make him the next coach of the Mountaineers, two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Friday.
The people spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because the contract was not yet final. Brown would replace Dana Holgorsen, who this week left West Virginia to become Houston's coach.
Yahoo! Sports first reported West Virginia and Brown were close to a deal.
Dana Holgorsen back home to coach University of Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — Dana Holgorsen is back at the University of Houston.
"It's great to be home," Holgorsen said Thursday at his introductory press conference.
Holgorsen left West Virginia to return to Houston, where he was offensive coordinator from 2008-09.
"When I left here 10 years ago, I left here with a frown," Holgorsen said. "Because, one, I was going to Oklahoma (State), but two, I just loved this city and this university so much. Obviously, things worked out OK."
Houston hires coach Dana Holgorsen away from West Virginia
Houston hired West Virginia's Dana Holgorsen as its coach Wednesday, ending his eight-year run with the Mountaineers.
Holgorsen was 61-41 and 33-30 in the Big 12 as he helped guide West Virginia through the transition from the Big East. Houston competes in the American Athletic Conference, which was formed from the remnants of Big East football after it was torn apart by realignment earlier this decade.
Some players skip bowls with bonuses at stake for coaches
Dana Holgorsen can earn a $25,000 bonus if West Virginia beats Syracuse next week in the Camping World Bowl, a game the Mountaineers will play without star quarterback Will Grier and left tackle Yodny Cajuste.
Dave Doeren's contract with North Carolina State calls for him to receive a $50,000 bonus if the Wolfpack beat Texas A&M in the Gator Bowl. N.C. State's best players on either side of the ball (receiver Kelvin Harmon and linebacker Germaine Pratt) will not play.
West Virginia shores up secondary with 5 DBs signed
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia has shored up its secondary by signing five defensive backs.
The Mountaineers landed 16 players Wednesday on the first day of the NCAA's early signing period.
Osita Smith, a 6-foot-2 safety, is from Wilde Lake High School in Bowie, Maryland, and 6-2 cornerback Dreshun Miller is transferring from Eastern Arizona Community College. Both are four-star recruits according to 247sports.
No. 7 West Virginia not looking past Oklahoma State
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — No. 7 West Virginia hopes for a spot in the Big 12 Championship game and possibly a berth in the College Football Playoff.
The next challenge for the Mountaineers (8-1, 6-1 Big 12, No. 9 CFP) comes Saturday when they visit Oklahoma State (5-5, 2-5), which is coming off a 48-47 loss at No. 6 Oklahoma last week.
Injuries mounting for TCU, tough test at No. 7 WVU next
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — TCU coach Gary Patterson figures all those injuries that have piled up for the Horned Frogs could present a problem for No. 7 West Virginia.
Patterson joked it might be difficult for West Virginia to put together a scouting plan against TCU's revolving-door defense.
"It's been a hard year for us," Patterson said. "This team hasn't quit battling."
TCU has seen 20 season-ending injuries and 36 players have missed playing time.

The sixth-ranked Mountaineers failed miserably.
Freshman Brock Purdy threw for 254 yards and three TDs and Iowa State throttled West Virginia 30-14 on Saturday, handing the Mountaineers their first loss in emphatic fashion.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — No. 6 West Virginia will head into the second Saturday in October as the Big 12's last undefeated team.
The elements of a potential upset appear to be in play for the Mountaineers (5-0, 3-0 Big 12).

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — One messy game didn't diminish West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen's confidence in Heisman Trophy hopeful Will Grier.
Grier's four turnovers overshadowed a four-touchdown performance in No. 9 West Virginia's 38-22 victory over Kansas on Saturday.
West Virginia (5-0, 3-0 Big 12) has won its first five games for the second time in three seasons.
"We'll take the sloppy win and go home," Holgorsen said.

Coach Dana Holgorsen said during a Big 12 coaches conference call Monday that Benton will have season-ending surgery. The junior college transfer injured his left knee in the second quarter of No. 17 West Virginia's 40-14 win Saturday over Tennessee.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia has added Southern Cal graduate transfer Kenny Bigelow Jr. to its roster.
West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen announced Bigelow's addition Saturday. He will be eligible to play immediately.
The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Bigelow graduated with a degree in sociology. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility after missing the 2014 and 2016 seasons with injuries. He saw action in six games last season and in 13 games in 2015.
West Virginia hires Marquel Blackwell as running backs coach
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia has hired Marquel Blackwell as running backs coach.
West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen announced Blackwell's hiring Thursday. He replaces Tony Dews, who was hired as running backs coach with the Tennessee Titans.
Blackwell spent the past two seasons as running backs coach at Toledo. He also had stints at Florida, South Florida and Western Kentucky.

West Virginia has two good reasons to feel confident heading into next season.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia running back Justin Crawford will skip the Mountaineers' bowl game to focus on preparing for the 2018 NFL Draft.
West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen made the announcement Thursday night in a statement.
Crawford was the third-leading rusher in the Big 12 this year with 1,061 yards and seven touchdowns and finished with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. The senior was named to the all-Big 12 second team both times.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Injured West Virginia quarterback Will Grier says he'll return for his senior season in 2018.
The Mountaineers announced Grier's intentions in a statement Thursday.
Grier says "there is still a great deal that I want this team to accomplish," while coach Dana Holgorsen said the decision "certainly makes it a great day for West Virginia football."
West Virginia earned its 36th all-time bowl berth Sunday when it accepted an invitation to the Heart of Dallas Bowl to play Utah of the Pac-12. The game is Dec. 26 at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas.
