HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a one-time speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan who later became Russia's leading defender on Capitol Hill and an outspoken advocate for legalized marijuana, was defeated Saturday, a victim of California's Democratic tilt and voters' distaste for President Donald Trump.

California Rep. Rohrabacher sheds GOP focus in tough race
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (AP) — Thirty years ago, California U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher campaigned for Congress as the face of the Reagan revolution.
The conservative campus activist and surfer known for his libertarian streak had worked for Ronald Reagan's presidential campaigns and later as a White House speechwriter. His posters displayed his image with the face of the 40th president.
The 71-year-old still surfs, but the days of unabashedly proclaiming his Republican bona fides are gone.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — In the battle for control of Congress, one of the toughest fights among Democrats has been settled by 126 votes: Businessman Harley Rouda will face endangered Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher in November.
Rouda has been locked in a close match with fellow Democrat Hans Keirstead for the second ballot slot in the 48th Congressional District in Orange County, California. The top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party.

SUNSET BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Endangered Republican incumbents advanced to November ballots in closely contested U.S. House races in California, where Democrats hope to capture a string of GOP-held seats in the party's bid to reclaim control of the chamber.
But the outcome in many crowded contests remained unclear Tuesday — it could take days to sort out — while Democrats feared being shut out of November runoffs in key districts.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Latest on Congressional races in California's primary election (all times local):
Endangered Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is headed for the November election.
Early returns in Tuesday's California primary election show the 15-term Republican easily advanced to a two-candidate showdown for the Orange County seat this fall.
Several candidates were jockeying for the second spot, including Republican Scott Baugh and Democrats Harley Rouda and Hans Keirstead.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Twenty-three years ago, Scott Baugh was a little-known Southern California lawyer whose conservative politics and youthful brio impressed Republican U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, who steered his new protege to a seat in the state Legislature.
Now, Baugh wants the congressman's job.
What was once a political kinship forged around the values of the Reagan revolution has deteriorated into a nasty rivalry in a state where Republicans can scarcely afford it.
