Marcelino under pressure as Valencia held at home again
MADRID (AP) — Missed chances and home setbacks — it's been a familiar plot for Valencia this season.
And it happened again on Saturday.
Valencia was held at Mestalla Stadium once more, conceding late to relegation-threatened Valladolid in a 1-1 draw in the Spanish league, adding pressure on embattled coach Marcelino.
The plot was repeated: Valencia played well and had plenty of chances to put the game away, including with a penalty kick, but it wasted most of them.
Blackman gives 2nd-tier Sporting win over Valencia in Copa
MADRID (AP) — Substitute forward Nick Blackman scored the winning goal with his first touch of the ball Tuesday to give second-division club Sporting Gijon a 2-1 win over Valencia in the first leg of their round-of-16 match in the Copa del Rey.
Blackman found the net in the 79th minute with a diving header just moments after entering the match.
Alaves remains unbeaten at home, rises to 4th in Spain
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Alaves extended its impressive form in the Spanish league by fighting back to beat Valencia 2-1 on Saturday, remaining undefeated through all nine games at home.
The small team from the northern Basque Country climbed past Real Madrid and into fourth place at six points behind leader Barcelona. Alaves also established its best record for the first half of a league with 31 points after 19 rounds.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his fifth Ballon d'Or award by leading Real Madrid to victory on Saturday, while Valencia kept the pressure on Spanish league leader Barcelona.
Ronaldo presented his trophy for the best player in football to Real Madrid's fans then scored twice as Sevilla was routed 5-0 at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Ronaldo received the honor on Thursday in Paris, his fifth trophy equaling Barcelona rival Lionel Messi.
Getafe’s poor field targeted by Spanish league opponents
MADRID (AP) — Spanish teams are seldom happy when playing at Getafe's small stadium in southern Madrid, no matter the result.
Win or lose, teams have been complaining about poor field conditions at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, which has been attracting more attention than the hosts' decent Spanish league campaign this season.
