The Lynx had just finished their first practice of the 2018 season their first workout as defending WNBA champions about to embark on their fifth attempt to repeat.
Seimone Augustus came over to answer a few questions. She saw someone holding onto a team roster.
I need one of those, Augustus said. Im still learning names.
As has been the case for years now, the core of the Lynx success is back, the starters. Well, four out of five; Maya Moore is still vying for a title for her team in Russia.
The starters will be familiar when the Lynx open their season in May. Seimone Augustus, Sylvia Fowles, Maya Moore, Rebekkah Brunson and Lindsay Whalen.
Lynx, with roster virtually set, looking to WNBA draft for camp competition
The WNBA draft is Thursday night. Three rounds, 36 total picks. And for most of the first half of the yearly affair, the Minnesota Lynx will sit and wait.
This is by design.
Determined to keep the championship window open for her starting five, Lynx general manager and coach Cheryl Reeve has restocked her bench with veterans in the wake of losing Plenette Pierson and Jia Perkins to retirement, Renee Montgomery to free agency and Natasha Howard in a trade.
Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve sharpening her general manager skills, even seeking tips from Rick Spielman, Thad Levine
Its not surprising Cheryl Reeve has looked in many different directions as she plots to push the Lynx ahead.
It was late December when Reeve, while signing a contract extension, had the title of general manager added to her head coaching position. In some ways, this was not a huge change; Reeve always had run the point when it came to finding ways to construct the roster, identifying trade and free agent targets and preparing for the draft.
