ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Maria Sharapova earned her first WTA win in her native Russia for 13 years after beating Daria Gavrilova 6-0, 6-4 in the first round of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy on Monday.
In a win which sets up a second-round match against Russian No. 1 Daria Kasatkina, Sharapova brushed aside her Australian opponent Gavrilova in the first set. Gavrilova raced to 4-2 in the second but Sharapova won four straight games and closed out the match.
US Open champion Osaka eases into 2nd round in Australia
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The only bug in the system was of the genuine flying variety when Naomi Osaka secured her first win at a major as a Grand Slam champion.
The U.S. Open champion beat Magda Linette 6-4, 6-2 to end play at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday at the Australian Open. The only delay in the 58-minute match came just before Osaka was serving for the match, when a ballboy tried to catch a bug that was fluttering on the court.

BEIJING (AP) — Unseeded Aleksandra Krunic made a remarkable comeback to oust sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina in the first round of the China Open on Saturday.

PRAGUE (AP) — Top-seeded Karolina Pliskova withdrew from her home Prague Open because of a right thigh injury on Monday.
Pliskova won the Stuttgart Open on Sunday for her 10th-career WTA title, and the previous week helped the Czech Republic beat Germany in Stuttgart in the Fed Cup semifinals.
