NEW YORK (AP) — The Latest on the U.S. Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year (all times local):
Alexander Zverev worked deep into the night to get into the U.S. Open's second round.
The No. 4-seeded Zverev made it through a tight first set and eventually wrested control for a 7-6 (9), 7-5, 6-4 victory over 168th-ranked Darian King, the first player from Barbados to participate in the main draw at any Grand Slam tournament.
Frantangelo upsets Tomic 6-2, 6-2 in BNP Paribas Open
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — American Bjorn Fratangelo upset Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open.
Ranked 112th, Fratangelo advanced to face No. 14 Tomas Berdych.
Adrian Mannarino outlasted Juan Monaco 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1, and Darian King topped Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5, 7-5.
Basilashvili upsets No. 1 seed Karlovic in Memphis Open
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Nikoloz Basilashvili beat top-seeded Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (2), 6-3 on Thursday to advance to the Memphis Open quarterfinals.
Basilashvili, ranked 67th in the world, never lost his serve and allowed the 20th-ranked Karlovic just one break-point opportunity.
Basilashvili will face Matthew Ebden, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 winner over 2016 Memphis Open runner-up Taylor Fritz in the late match.
Fritz saves 3 match points to beat No. 8 seed Lu in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Taylor Fritz saved three match points in a third-set tiebreaker to beat No. 8 seed Yen-Hsun Lu 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7) on Tuesday night in the first round of the Memphis Open.
Fritz, the runner-up in this event last year, won without ever breaking Lu's serve.
Earlier Tuesday, qualifier Darian King defeated No. 5 seed Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-4. King, ranked 140th in the world, dropped just 12 points in 10 service games against the 32nd-ranked Tomic.
