Racism lingers for NHL players 60 years after O’Ree landmark
WASHINGTON (AP) — Devante Smith-Pelly got up from his seat.
The Washington Capitals forward had heard the unmistakably racist taunts from fans from inside the penalty box. As a black hockey player, he knew exactly what they meant by yelling, "Basketball, basketball, basketball!"
"It's just ignorant people being ignorant," Smith-Pelly said.
McDavid has 4 points, Nurse scores in OT as Oilers top Jets
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Edmonton coach Todd McLennan made no apology for his bias toward Oilers star Connor McDavid.
McLennan only had to watch McDavid score twice and add two assists as the Oilers overcame a three-goal deficit to beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-4 Tuesday night on Darnell Nurse's goal 1:25 into overtime.
"He's our captain. He's our leader," McLellan said of McDavid. "He's, in my opinion, the best player on earth right now and he decided that he was going to will his team to a win."
Penguins goalie Matt Murray has only been through two NHL trade deadlines in his career and has yet to celebrate his 24th birthday, but he has gained some wisdom that battle-scarred general managers around the league might need a reminder of in the next week or so.

Oilers halt losing streak with 6-2 win over Red Wings
DETROIT (AP) — The Edmonton Oilers buckled down and played the kind of hockey they know they're capable of playing.
A solid 6-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday ended a three-game losing streak for Oilers, who'd surrendered 18 goals during their skid.
"There's no sense of relief, because we know we are capable of winning hockey games," Oilers center Mark Letestu said. "We know those three games aren't the hockey we can play, and we came in to prove that tonight.
Vancouver, British Columbia — This might surprise those people who know Anthony Mantha as a goal scorer.
And, let's face it, since being promoted to the Red Wings last season, Mantha has done a good job scoring goals, something he was so prolific at in junior hockey.
But there was a play during Sunday's victory in Edmonton that Mantha enjoyed just as much, or even more.
And it didn't involve scoring a goal.
It was a linemate, in this case Martin Frk, scoring a goal.
