Mitchell helps South Alabama beat Coastal Carolina in 2OT
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Trhae Mitchell had 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists and South Alabama pulled away in the second overtime to beat Coastal Carolina 84-77 on Saturday.
Kory Holden added 16 points and scored the go-ahead points for the Jaguars (9-6, 2-0 Sun Belt Conference) on a 3-pointer that made it 78-75 with 3:06 left in the game. Zac Cuthbertson cut the deficit to one for the Chanticleers (7-7, 1-1), but Holden hit another jumper and Mitchell scored the final four points.
Coastal Carolina hits 15 3s, beats Troy 88-75
TROY, Ala. (AP) — Tyrell Gumbs-Frater scored 20 on Thursday night and Coastal Carolina made a season-high 15 3-pointers on just 25 attempts to open the Sun Belt season with an 88-75 win over Troy.
Gumbs-Frater tied his career high with six made 3s on nine attempts for the Chanticleers (7-6). Zac Cuthbertson added 17 points, David Kralj scored 15, and Trevion Brown and Amidou Bamba had 11 points apiece.
Coastal Carolina thwarts NC Central comeback in 69-65 win
CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Zac Cuthbertson scored 23 points, three other players each scored 10 and Coastal Carolina beat North Carolina Central 69-65 on Sunday.
NC Central's Raasean Davis' 3-point play with 2:23 made it 61-all, but Coastal Carolina (6-5) used an 8-4 spurt the rest of the way to seal the win. Trevion Brown, Cuthbertson and Tommy Burton each sank two foul shots and Josh Coleman added a layup.
Coastal Carolina beats Methodist 88-57 behind Cuthbertson
CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Zac Cuthbertson had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, Amidou Bamba added 14 points and 10 boards and Coastal Carolina never trailed in beating Division III Methodist 88-57 on Tuesday night.
David Kralj scored 11 points with three 3-pointers and Trevion Brown made five assists for the Chanticleer (4-3), who shot 57 percent and outrebounded Methodist 40-23.
McDonald scores 31, Northern Kentucky beats Coastal Carolina
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (AP) — Drew McDonald had seven of his season-high 31 points in the final four minutes to help Northern Kentucky close out the NKU Basketball Classic with an 89-83 win over Coastal Carolina on Sunday night.
McDonald's layup with 1:26 left made it 84-76 for the Norse (6-0). The Chanticleers' David Kralj hit a 3-pointer at 1:09 to cut the deficit to five, but Northern Kentucky made 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute.
