Hopkins’ big season helps Texans to playoffs
HOUSTON (AP) — DeAndre Hopkins had the best season of his career, carrying Houston's receivers in a year the group was decimated by injuries.
Now the self-described best receiver in the NFL will need another big performance for the Texans to get a win over the Colts in the wild-card game on Saturday.
"I feel like I'm a leader of this team, not just this offense," Hopkins said. "I was named captain, so for me to go out and play my best game is important, not just for me but for this team."
Texans have history of success in wild-card game
HOUSTON (AP) — Wild-card games have been a good place for the Houston Texans.
The Texans return to the playoffs Saturday for the third time in four years when they host the Indianapolis Colts in a wild-card game. The Texans have won three of their previous four such games.
Texans clinch AFC South title with 20-3 win over Jaguars
HOUSTON (AP) — After the Houston Texans fell to 0-3 with a loss at home to the New York Giants on Sept. 23, they appeared to be headed for a second straight losing season.

Texans need win against Jags to clinch division
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans are already in the playoffs but need a win against Jacksonville on Sunday to clinch the AFC South and have a chance for a first-round bye.
"That's the main thing we're thinking about is clinching this division, nothing else," receiver DeAndre Hopkins said. "In order for us to get to where we want to get we've got to win this game."
Hopkins’ great hands have Texans on verge of AFC South title
HOUSTON (AP) — DeAndre Hopkins believes if a ball comes near him he should catch it.
"That's been my mindset since I've been playing football," he said. "Defense, offense, basketball as well, the ball's in the air, it's mine."
That belief has led to some amazing catches, and lately he seems to make at least one a game. All of which has helped the Texans turn around their season and leave them one win from clinching the AFC South.
Texans look ahead to bigger goals after reaching 10 wins
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans moved closer to clinching the AFC South by bouncing back from last week's loss with a win over the Jets.
Now they'll try to get banged-up players DeAndre Hopkins and Lamar Miller healthy before visiting the Super Bowl champion Eagles next week. A win could leave open the possibility of getting a first-round playoff bye.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos may have lost a respected voice when they traded former captain Demaryius Thomas to the Houston Texans on Tuesday, but they certainly didn't lose any of their gift of gab.
Watson throws 5 TDs as Texans beat Dolphins 42-23
HOUSTON (AP) — This is the Deshaun Watson the Houston Texans have been waiting for all season.
Watson matched his career high with five touchdown passes to lead the Texans to their fifth straight victory, 42-23 over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night.
The second-year quarterback has played well at times this year but hadn't had a breakout game while dealing with rib and lung injuries over the past few weeks.

Garrett’s OT choice speaks to Cowboys’ sputtering offense
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Jason Garrett decided to trust his defense by punting on a short fourth down in Houston territory in an overtime loss to the Texans.
The choice by the Dallas coach also said a lot about a sputtering offense that simply hasn't looked good enough to get the Cowboys where they want to go in 2018, even with NFL rushing leader Ezekiel Elliott.
Watson helps Texans to 19-16 win over Cowboys in overtime
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson has a knack for making big plays, whether it's with his arm or his feet.
But after the quarterback took a few too many unnecessary hits in a 19-16 overtime win against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night, his teammates wondered if maybe he should dial things back a bit.
Fairbairn’s FG in OT lifts Texans over Cowboys 19-16
HOUSTON (AP) — When DeAndre Hopkins had a chance to make a play in overtime on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, Houston's star receiver was intent on redeeming himself after losing a rare fumble in the third quarter.
He did that with a spectacular 49-yard catch and run that got the Texans in scoring range, and Ka'imi Fairbairn kicked a 36-yard field goal to lift the Texans to a 19-16 win.

Webb will be targeted replacing Eli Apple at cornerback
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants cornerback B.W. Webb is going to be targeted by the Houston Texans this weekend.
It's a given.
Starting cornerback Eli Apple is going to miss the game with a hamstring injury and Webb seemingly is going to replace him in the starting lineup. That gives Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson two options. Throw at Pro Bowl cornerback Janoris Jenkins or go after Webb, a five-year veteran who didn't play a down last season in limited time with Cleveland.
Texans-Giants game features top WRs in Hopkins, Beckham
HOUSTON (AP) — It will be a showcase of two of the NFL's best receivers in DeAndre Hopkins and Odell Beckham Jr. when the Houston Texans and New York Giants meet on Sunday with both teams looking for their first win.
Hopkins likes Beckham's determination and grit, and sees similarities between himself and the New York star.
"Of course. He makes plays no matter where the ball is," Hopkins said. "He's not the tallest, I'm not the tallest, but he (goes) up and gets it. He just makes plays."
Texans blast educator for ‘black QB’ comment about Watson
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans fired back Wednesday at an East Texas school superintendent who wrote: "You can't count on a black quarterback," in the comment section of an online news article where he was criticizing quarterback Deshaun Watson.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Deshaun Watson is back and starting at quarterback. J.J. Watt also is running around on defense along with Whitney Mercilus.
Health has yet to translate into victories for the Houston Texans.
Watson threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns Sunday, but he made a mistake that absorbed the final 17 seconds in a 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
Texans have high hopes for 2018 with Watson and Watt healthy
HOUSTON (AP) — Deshaun Watson's performance in just a few games as a rookie last year has everyone looking forward to what the Houston Texans quarterback can do in a full season.
Perhaps no one is more excited about Watson's potential than DeAndre Hopkins, Houston's top receiver who has suffered through a revolving door at the position since he was drafted in 2013.
"The possibilities, what we can do is limitless," Hopkins said.

Tempers flare as 49ers, Texans practice together
HOUSTON (AP) — There was plenty of intensity on Wednesday when the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers met in the first of two joint practices before this weekend's preseason game.
A little too much in fact, with Houston receiver DeAndre Hopkins and 49ers safety Jimmie Ward being kicked out of practice after getting into a scuffle on the first play of receiver drills.
FANTASY PLAYS: Essentials for drafting the right 2018 squad
Fantasy football is supposed to be fun, but some players stress a lot about their upcoming drafts.
Most notably, they obsess about their first-round pick and who may be available when their turn comes. Don't play the guessing game — try to figure out who will be picked ahead of you. Let the draft come to you, even at the beginning.
Fantasy football players who miss out on the elite quartet of running backs can still make a pair of moves to boldly position for a championship.
Selecting Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins in the first round isn't shocking. After all, Hopkins comes off a 2017 season that saw him catch 96 passes for 1,378 yards and 13 touchdowns. Over the past three seasons, Hopkins has been targeted a whopping 518 times despite the offensive struggles of the Houston offense.
Quavo jokes about tryout with Texans after Heinicke plays
HOUSTON (AP) — Quavo of the Grammy-nominated rap group Migos had some fun on social media this week after it was pointed out that he once held a high school football record that Houston Texans backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke eventually broke.
Houston WR Hopkins to miss 1st career game with calf injury
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston receiver DeAndre Hopkins will miss the first game of his career on Sunday because of a calf injury.
Hopkins has appeared in 79 straight games since he was taken in the first round of the 2013 draft. He will miss the season finale against Indianapolis.
He says: "It's my first game since I've been in the NFL that I'm going to miss. So I'm pretty upset about that."
Last week the fantasy playoffs began with a murderer's row of quarterback matchups — including Russell Wilson and Ben Roethlisberger squaring off against fantasy's two stingiest QB defenses in the Jaguars and Ravens, respectively.
Well, Russ (QB6 overall in Week 14) and Big Ben (QB1) clearly aced their tests. Will two top-shelf WR1s this season — DeAndre Hopkins and A.J. Green — fare similarly well?
Savage’s career game marred by pick in loss to Titans
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tom Savage came in without starting wide receiver Will Fuller, then the Houston quarterback lost wide receiver Bruce Ellington early with a hamstring injury followed by tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz and receiver Braxton Miller with concussions.
Then running back Alfred Blue was forced out by a concussion.
Four offensive players gone, forcing the Texans to mix and match on the fly. Even Savage was evaluated for a concussion at halftime, though he didn't miss a snap.
Titans win for 6th time in 7 games, beat Texans 24-13
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans may not impress many people with how they're playing.
If they keep piling up victories, that's all that matters.
LeShaun Sims intercepted a pass intended for DeAndre Hopkins in the end zone with 1:02 left, and the Titans beat the Houston Texans 24-13 on Sunday to stay atop the AFC South.
Hopkins shines for Texans with toughness and tenacity
HOUSTON (AP) — The right side of his No. 10 jersey was torn almost completely apart and white paint that had rubbed off the field peppered his long dreadlocks.
DeAndre Hopkins had a long day dealing with near-constant double teams and multiple defenders pulling and grabbing at him in Houston's loss to Baltimore on Monday night.
Savage learning under fire for skidding Texans
BALTIMORE (AP) — Tom Savage understands the requirements of his job as an NFL quarterback.
Rule No. 1: Protect the football.
Playing in his 11th NFL game, Houston's former backup put up some decent numbers against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night. He completed 22 passes for 252 yards, including a beautiful 39-yarder to DeAndre Hopkins.
The problem is, Savage lost a fumble, was intercepted twice and failed to throw for a touchdown in a 23-16 defeat.
Texans end three-game skid with 31-21 win over Arizona
HOUSTON (AP) — DeAndre Hopkins admitted that Andre Johnson being at NRG Stadium on Sunday to become the inaugural member of the Houston Texans Ring of Honor gave him a little boost in a 31-21 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
"Andre is always inspiring," Hopkins said. "Just his presence, being out there before the game ... for him to have this day, it definitely brought a spark to some people."
Savage looks to rebound after “cringe-worthy” performance
HOUSTON (AP) — Tom Savage knows he has a lot of work to do to rebound this week against the Los Angeles Rams after what he called a "cringe-worthy" performance in his first start for the Houston Texans on Sunday since Deshaun Watson sustained a season-ending knee injury.
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is among NFL’s best receivers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The list of the league's most productive receivers since the midway point of last season reads as what you might expect, highlighted by Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown right on top.
Mike Evans is there. So are T.Y. Hilton and Brandin Cooks.
But the second-most productive pass-catcher is not Julio Jones or Odell Beckham Jr., DeAndre Hopkins or Stefon Diggs. In fact, the name right behind Brown on the list isn't a wide receiver at all.
Seahawks unsure about status of Thomas with hamstring strain
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks are unsure of the status of safety Earl Thomas after he suffered a strained hamstring late in their win over the Houston Texans.
Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Monday the team won't know until late in the week whether Thomas will be able to play against Washington. Thomas was injured in the fourth quarter of Seattle's 41-38 win over Houston as he tried to chase down DeAndre Hopkins on a 72-yard touchdown catch-and-run.
Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins’ practice absence reportedly due to owner Bob McNair ‘inmate’ comment
Texans Pro Bowl WR DeAndre Hopkins' absence from Friday's practice was related to team owner Bob McNair saying in a closed-door players-owners meeting two weeks ago, "we can't have the inmates running the prison" according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Schefter tweeted Friday that "Texans players wanted to walkout today in response to Bob McNair's comments, per @sarahbarshop. Had to be persuaded."
1.DeAndre Hopkins, Texans vs. Browns
Former Gamecocks receiver Bruce Ellington thriving with Texans and Deshaun Watson
HOUSTON — DeAndre Hopkins knew right away what it meant to get Bruce Ellington on the Houston Texans’ roster and couldn’t wait to tell teammates about his fellow wide receiver.
“Toughness, for sure,” Hopkins said. “I’ve known Bruce a long time. I’ve played basketball against Bruce (in high school) so I know his mentality.”
It works both ways. Hard-nosed versatility is just what a team with a rookie quarterback needs when Hopkins, the Pro Bowl receiver, is blanketed.
Houston’s gets boost with Fuller’s return in 57-14 win
HOUSTON (AP) — DeAndre Hopkins was confident that the return of Will Fuller would help open things up for him and improve Houston's offense.

HOUSTON (AP) — After dealing with a revolving door at quarterback since he was drafted in 2013, Houston's DeAndre Hopkins couldn't hide his glee when asked what it felt like to be a part of the best offensive day in franchise history — thanks to another big game by rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson.

The $49 million guaranteed trumps Julio Jones' $47 million guaranteed with the Atlanta Falcons.
