49ers pick up 5th-year option on DL DeForest Buckner
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have picked up the fifth-year option on defensive lineman DeForest Buckner's rookie contract.
49ers DL Buckner finally turns pressure into sacks
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Generating pressure on the quarterback has never been a major problem for DeForest Buckner since entering the NFL in 2016. Turning that pressure into sacks, however, was missing his first two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.
Buckner has finally started to put the whole package together this season, becoming one of the league's top inside rushers and justifying the 49ers' first-round investment made a few years ago.
49ers hope defense gets boost from Jimmy Garoppolo addition
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — While the addition of Jimmy Garoppolo under center dramatically changed the look of the 49ers' offense on Sunday, it had a huge impact on the defense as well.
Garoppolo helped San Francisco to control the game by nearly doubling up the Bears in time of possession, 38:47 to 21:13, which meant the defense played a season-low 36 snaps while putting together one of its best performances of the year.
Oregon left tackle Tyrell Crosby earned first-team all-Pac-12 honors on Tuesday along with sophomore Brenden Schooler, who was honored for his work on special teams.
Later Tuesday, Crosby earned the Morris Trophy as the Pac-12’s top offensive lineman, an award voted on by the conference’s defensive linemen. Washington’s Vita Vea was named defensive lineman of the year.
Crosby is the seventh Oregon player to win the award and the first since DeForest Buckner in 2015.
49ers DL Arik Armstead to have surgery on broken hand
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Defensive lineman Arik Armstead broke his hand during the 49ers' loss in Washington and will need surgery, coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday.
Armstead, a first-round pick in 2015, will miss significant time for a second straight season after having shoulder surgery that cost him the final eight games of 2016. He may go on injured reserve, where he would join fellow defensive ends Tank Carradine (ankle) and Ronald Blair (wrist).
No nostalgia for Goff as he leads Rams back to Bay Area
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Jared Goff knows what to expect Thursday.
The Los Angeles Rams quarterback played at Levi's Stadium in college against future San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman DeForest Buckner. Goff also faced fellow first-round picks Arik Armstead and Solomon Thomas during his college career. And the former California star isn't caught up in his return to the Bay Area and another chance to play in front of familiar faces.
Wilson’s escape act helps Seahawks top 49ers 12-9
SEATTLE (AP) — After 7 ½ quarters of offensive inefficiency, the Seattle Seahawks finally broke the seal on the goal line.
It took some more magic from quarterback Russell Wilson to make it happen and avoid an 0-2 start.
Wilson avoided two potential sacks and found Paul Richardson in the front corner of the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown with 7:06 left and the Seahawks held on for an unsightly 12-9 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

49ers rookie Buckner becoming bright spot in lost season
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Not much has gone right for the 49ers during their second straight woebegone season.
San Francisco (1-12) is mired in the longest losing streak in team history. The defense ranks last in most key statistics.
Then there's rookie defensive lineman DeForest Buckner, who has been a rare bright spot.
DT Dorsey, TE McDonald out for 49ers vs. Cardinals
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey and tight end Vance McDonald are among the players inactive for the San Francisco 49ers against the Arizona Cardinals.
Cornerback Jimmie Ward (quadriceps) and defensive lineman DeForest Buckner (foot) had already been ruled out of Thursday night's game. Dorsey is being held out with a knee injury and McDonald is missing his second straight game with an injured hip.

It has been seven months since Oregon’s triple-overtime loss at the Alamo Bowl ended the Ducks’ streak of consecutive double-digit-win seasons at seven.
In the aftermath of the choppy 9-4 campaign, fourth-year coach Mark Helfrich will reboot with a reshaped staff when fall camp opens Monday.
The Ducks will be flying just below the national radar at No. 22 in the coaches poll as they begin three weeks of critical preparation for the 2016 season, which begins...
SANTA CLARA -- Stanford product Joshua Garnett can report to his first 49ers training camp on time Saturday, having ended a contract stalemate Friday night and agreeing to a four-year pact.
Garnett's deal leaves San Diego Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa as the only unsigned, first-round draft pick.
Garnett is projected to start immediately on the 49ers offensive line, likely at right guard. Free-agent acquisition Zane Beadles worked at left guard throughout the...

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (5-11)
OPEN CAMP: July 31, Santa Clara, California
LAST YEAR: After Jim Harbaugh's departure to Michigan following 8-8 season and first missed playoffs in four years in late 2014, 49ers were even worse last season under first-year coach Jim Tomsula. Promoted from defensive line coaching spot, it was one-and-done before Chip Kelly was hired to replace him. General manager Trent Baalke, going into sixth season as GM and 12th with franchise, has...
