CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — It might be a short span, but Miami is finally enjoying the best stretch of its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule.
Vasiljevic helps Miami beat cold Notre Dame, 62-47
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Before the Miami Hurricanes headed to the postgame locker room, they assembled along the free throw line and waved their index fingers to a serenade from the pep band.
For one night at least, and against Notre Dame at least, the Hurricanes were No. 1.
Dejan Vasiljevic and Anthony Lawrence had double-doubles and Miami used stout defense to break a five-game losing streak by beating the Fighting Irish 62-47 Wednesday.
Johnson leads Miami past Campbell 73-62
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Zach Johnson scored 22 points to lead Miami to a 73-62 victory over Campbell on Saturday afternoon.
The Hurricanes (8-4) were never threatened after building a 23-9 lead 10:35 into the first half. Johnson hit two 3-pointers that keyed Miami's early run. Johnson shot 5 of 6 from behind the arc. The Camels (6-7) got no closer than 30-24 on a Chris Clemons layup with 4:24 remaining in the first half.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — The exciting but erratic Miami Hurricanes finally found something they do consistently well: win close games.
Coach Jim Larranaga's young, No. 24-ranked Hurricanes have strung together four consecutive victories by a total of eight points, all decided on the final possession, to earn the No. 3 seeding in this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in New York.
Last season: 21-12, lost in first round of NCAA tournament.
Brown’s 3 lifts Miami over No. 18 Virginia, 54-48 in OT
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Bruce Brown had a tough night from the field, and yet, with the ball in his hands and Miami in need of a basket, the freshman guard put his faith in loads of summertime shooting work.
Brown made a 3-pointer with 23.8 seconds left in overtime and the Hurricanes beat No. 18 Virginia 54-48 on Monday night for the Cavaliers' fourth straight loss.
"I caught it in rhythm, and my only thought was to put it up because he was playing a bit off me," Brown said.
New Zealand’s Waardenburg signs with Hurricanes
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — New Zealand native Sam Waardenburg has signed a scholarship agreement with the Miami Hurricanes' basketball team.
The 6-foot-9 Waardenburg will join the Hurricanes immediately and is expected to begin competition with the 2017-18 season.
Waardenburg represented New Zealand in the Under-18 World Championship in Kazakhstan. He was also recruited by Virginia, SMU and Utah.
Well-traveled shooter finds a home with Hurricanes
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Dejan Vasiljevic is a native of Canada with Serbian roots who grew up in Australia and has now found a home as a shooting guard for the Miami Hurricanes.
Vasiljevic is the most well-traveled member of a talented freshman class already playing a significant role for the Hurricanes, who compete in an eight-team tournament in Orlando beginning Thursday.
In Miami's first three games, all wins, Vasiljevic has averaged 11.7 points while going 9 for 18 from 3-point range.
