DEMING, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico State Police say two men are dead after a four-car crash between Hatch and Deming.
They say 75-year-old Roy Edwards of Silver City and 23-year-old Alexis Chavez of Deming both were pronounced dead at the scene of Tuesday afternoon's crash.
State Police say a passenger car was traveling on State Road 26 following behind a van that was pulling a flatbed trailer with a vehicle on it.

DEMING, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say a prisoner has escaped from a county jail in southwestern New Mexico.
The New Mexico State Police identifies the inmate who escaped Monday evening from the Luna County Detention Center in Deming as Joshua Mirka.
A State Police spokesman says Mirka was being held after being arrested July 27 on a warrant for alleged probation and parole violations for failing to register as a sex offender.
Federal authorities looking for Deming bank robber
DEMING, N.M. (AP) — Federal authorities and police in one southern New Mexico community are searching for a man who robbed a Deming bank.
The FBI says the man, wearing a boonie hat and a camouflage jacket, walked into the First Savings Bank on Thursday morning. Armed with a shotgun, he demanded money from a teller and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspect drove away in a white SUV. He was described as a white male, about 6 feet tall with a slim build.
DEMING, N.M. (AP) — The former owner of an escrow services business in Deming has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for embezzling more than $800,000 from 12 Luna County residents.
Prosecutors say 48-year-old Anna Delgado also was ordered to pay nearly $660,000 in restitution to her victims.
Delgado formerly owned Mimbres Valley Escrow Services.

2 die in New Mexico wreck of vehicle fleeing Border Patrol
LORDSBURG, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico authorities say two people died after being ejected from a vehicle that struck a road sign, entered a highway median and overturned several times while fleeing from U.S. Border Patrol agents.
State Police said the wreck occurred Thursday on Interstate 10 between Lordsburg and Deming in southwestern New Mexico.
The eastbound vehicle's third occupant was injured and airlifted to a hospital in El Paso, Texas.

Canadian man dies in New Mexico after being hit by a vehicle
DEMING, N.M. (AP) — Authorities in southwestern New Mexico say a Canadian man is dead after being struck by a vehicle on a freeway.
New Mexico State Police say 64-year-old Sandor Tarkanyi of Oshawa, Ontario was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident around 4:30 a.m. Monday.
They say a vehicle driven by Tarkanyi was disabled after striking a concrete barrier at a construction zone on Interstate 10 east of Deming.
Deming man’s secret wealth benefits New Mexico university
DEMING, N.M. (AP) — Cy Cress was a world traveler who visited exotic places and wrote stories about them for U.S. magazines in the years following World War II. He settled down in Deming in 1985, where he lived quietly until his death on Jan. 27 at age 96.
"I was going to try Silver City, and I didn't realize that the kids were coming into college then and rentals were pretty tough to find," he recalled. "So, I went down to Deming."

DEMING, N.M. (AP) — State transportation officials plan to take steps to reduce hazardous driving conditions created by blowing dust along a highway in southwestern New Mexico.
The Department of Transportation plans to use netting and reseeding to promote vegetation growth on a mile-long stretch of U.S. 180 about 15 miles northwest of Deming.

Deming man killed in motorcycle crash
DEMING, N.M. (AP) — State police say a motorcycle rider has died after crashing in Deming.
The crash happened around 10 p.m. Saturday in the area of New Mexico Highway 549 and Pine Street.
According to investigators, it appears the driver, 51-year-old Richard Cowles, lost control on a curve in the roadway and hit a median.
The impact threw Cowles from the motorcycle.
He was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead.
