Newcomb goes 6 strong, Albies provides jolt as Braves top SF
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Atlanta Braves are threatening to turn a tight NL East race into a runaway finish.
Sean Newcomb pitched six strong innings, Ozzie Albies sparked the offense with two extra-base hits and Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 4-1 on Monday night.
The Braves moved five games ahead of Philadelphia atop the NL East and reduced their magic number to 15 with their fourth win in five games.
The Giants lost their ninth straight, matching their worst skid since 2006.
Giants activate Strickland, shift Sandoval to 60-day DL
CINCINNATI (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have activated reliever Hunter Strickland from the 60-day disabled list.
Strickland broke his pinkie finger on his right hand when he punched a door in frustration after a blown save against Miami on June 18. He is 3-3 with a 2.84 ERA and 13 saves in 34 games.
Ervin’s leadoff home run in 11th lifts Reds over Giants 2-1
CINCINNATI (AP) — San Francisco Giants pitcher Casey Kelly had a big fan in the Cincinnati dugout — his dad, Pat, is the Reds bench coach.
Starting two days after pitching in relief, Kelly worked into the fifth inning Friday night. The Reds eventually won, 2-1 on a leadoff home run by Phillip Ervin in the 11th inning.
Giants rookie Rodriguez goes on DL with hamstring injury
CINCINNATI (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have placed standout rookie right-hander Dereck Rodriguez on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.
Right-hander Casey Kelly is now scheduled to start Friday in the series opener against the Reds. The move is retroactive to Monday, then Rodriguez was injured during a scrum between the Giants and Dodgers on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. The team says he suffered a Grade 1 strain.
Rodriguez sparkles again, Giants beat Pirates 4-3
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A year ago, Dereck Rodriguez was down in Double-A ball, a converted outfielder hoping to take a new path as a pitcher.
A non-roster invite to spring training, Rodriguez finally got the call to the majors in late May.
Since then, he's sparkled.
Rodriguez threw seven innings of two-hit ball to continue his fine rookie season and San Francisco beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Sunday.
It's been an eventful week in real-life baseball as familiar names like starting pitcher J.A. Happ and closer Zach Britton were traded by their respective teams. Trade deadlines in many season-long fantasy Baseball leagues are quickly approaching, making it important to evaluate your team's needs heading into the final months.
Believe it or not, you can still find value on your league's waiver wire. Here are a few players that can help you in the long and short term.
A look at what's happening around the majors today:
Several top teams in the National League are matched up against fellow playoff contenders. Arizona wraps up a four-game series at Wrigley Field versus the Cubs. Max Muncy and the Dodgers host Atlanta. And it's Milwaukee in San Francisco to face rookie Dereck Rodriguez. The son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez is 5-1 with a 2.72 ERA, and the Giants have won his last six starts.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Dereck Rodriguez had no problems sliding back into San Francisco's starting rotation after a rare appearance out of the bullpen before the All-Star break.
The Giants even hit a couple of home runs Friday night — a rarity these days for manager Bruce Bochy's ballclub.
Rodriguez pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning for his fourth consecutive win, sending the Giants to a 5-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Buster Posey would prefer not to discuss his inflamed right hip, and notes that if it wasn't the reason he has to skip the All-Star Game it might still be a secret that he needs an injection once the first half wraps up this weekend.
It has affected him hitting and behind the plate.
That's what made Posey's game-ending hit all the more impressive.
PHOENIX (AP) — For the second night in a row, a young San Francisco pitcher shut down the Arizona Diamondbacks.
This time, Dereck Rodriguez blanked them into the seventh inning and the Giants made it two straight wins in Arizona with a 7-0 victory Saturday.
Rodriguez's performance came a night after Andrew Suarez allowed one run in six innings during San Francisco's 2-1 series-opening victory. The NL West-leading Diamondbacks have managed just one run in the last 18 innings.
NEW YORK (AP) — Miami pitcher Dan Straily has been suspended for five games for intentionally throwing a pitch at San Francisco's Buster Posey while warnings were in place for both teams.
Major League Baseball also suspended Marlins manager Don Mattingly for one game Thursday and fined Straily and Mattingly undisclosed amounts.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Buster Posey certainly thought he got hit by a pitch in retaliation.
Manager Bruce Bochy is still disappointed the Marlins plunked Evan Longoria last week and the third baseman is now recovering from surgery on his left hand.
Miami's Don Mattingly insists nobody on either side was intentionally hit and became upset that the umpires warned both teams too quickly.
