The Beauregard Parish Police Jury halted the program to allow jurors a chance to re-examine its permit and bounty ordinance, The American Press reported.

Mother charged in death of infant who had severe burns
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — A Louisiana mother and her boyfriend face a murder charge after authorities said the woman's 11-month-old son suffered severe burns and was left untreated for two weeks.
KPLC-TV reports that 24-year-old Shamira Kimbrough and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Christian Coutee, were charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
Man arrested, accused of burning mother’s house over mold
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — Officials in Louisiana say a man set his mother's rental home on fire because it had mold.
The State Fire Marshal's Office says in a Facebook post that 30-year-old Michael McClendon was arrested and booked Saturday into the Beauregard Parish Jail on an arson charge. News outlets report he is accused of burning the house in DeRidder.
Amerisafe: 3Q Earnings Snapshot
DERIDDER, La. (AP) _ Amerisafe Inc. (AMSF) on Wednesday reported third-quarter profit of $19.7 million.
The Deridder, Louisiana-based company said it had net income of $1.02 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to $1.01 per share.
The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 75 cents per share.
James D. Cain Jr. nominated for federal judgeship
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Lake Charles attorney has been nominated for a federal judgeship.
Sens. Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy said Monday that James D. Cain Jr. was nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as a U.S. district judge for the Western District of Louisiana in Lake Charles.
Cain is a Deridder native and the son of former state Sen. James David Cain.

On a per-share basis, the Deridder, Louisiana-based company said it had profit of 88 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 92 cents per share.
The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 73 cents per share.
19-year sheriff’s deputy accused of rape, fired
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — A veteran sheriff's deputy in Louisiana has been fired after being arrested on a rape charge.
Robert Shortridge was fired from the Calcasieu (KAL'-kuh-shoo) Parish Sheriff's Office and was being held without bond in the Beauregard Parish Jail.
News outlets report that he was arrested in connection with the rape of a family friend July 15 at a home in Ragley. He turned himself in to the Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office on Tuesday to face a charge of third-degree rape.

Volunteer firefighter arrested for simple arson
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — A volunteer firefighter for the Longville Fire Department has been arrested on a charge of simple arson.
The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal says 24-year-old Chance Felice of Longville was arrested Monday for allegedly setting an air mattress on fire, which subsequently spread to his home. It was unknown if Felice is represented by an attorney.
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — DeRidder High School senior Cameron Cross suffered a gunshot wound in September and was paralyzed from the waist down. This May, he brought home two first-place medals from the state track and field meet.
"As unfortunate as this situation may be, Cameron represents the 'can-do' spirit of DeRidder High School," said Principal Harry Hooker.
Louisiana veterans advocate for medical cannabis
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — Four veterans representing countless others have been sticking their necks out to advocate for the legalization of medical cannabis in Louisiana.
Bud Clark of Longville served in the US Navy from 1972 to 1975, Paul Bonial of Alexandria served in the Louisiana Army National Guard and then the U.S. Army from 1983 to 1992, Tony Landry of Jennings served in the U.S. Navy from 1988 to 1994, and Brian Greer of Lafayette served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from 1987 to 1991.
Cyclist treks cross-country for first responders
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — A cyclist recently stopped by DeRidder, Louisiana, as he made his way from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast.
Aodhan O'Ferrell is a former firefighter and paramedic now riding his bicycle in an effort to raise awareness for "move over" laws. These are meant to protect paramedics, firefighters and law enforcement from motorists while they are pulled over doing their duty, maintaining public safety.
Louisiana city elects first woman as its mayor
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — A Louisiana city has elected a woman to be its mayor for the first time.
The Lake Charles American Press reports unofficial results from the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office show voters made history Saturday as Misty Clanton won more than 1,460 votes in DeRidder's mayoral race. The results show Mike Harper garnered over 450 votes.

DERIDDER, La. (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says a Louisiana site contaminated with creosote should be added to the Superfund list of the nation's most contaminated sites.
The American Creosote site is south of DeRidder in Beauregard Parish. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality says it was a timber treatment operation for the first half of the 20th century.
A news release Monday says EPA has proposed adding it to the list.

DERIDDER, La. (AP) — Three DeRidder puppies found discarded in a backpack are now awaiting adoption in Wisconsin thanks to a network of volunteers.

Police looking for missing sign, and whoever took it
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — The "Welcome to the City of DeRidder" has been stolen — again.
On La. 27, it can get quite dark at night and there's not much around, making the sign an easy target. The last time it went missing, Police Chief John Gott tells KPLC-TV (http://bit.ly/2m0753x ) they didn't have to search long for it.
He says after a few phone calls, it was magically returned.
Dead identified; State, federal officials look into blast
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — Authorities have identified the three workers who died in an explosion at the Packaging Corporation of America plant in DeRidder.
The Beauregard Daily news reports that the Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office identified those killed as 33-year-old William Rolls, Jr.; 42-year-old Sedrick Stallworth; and 41-year-old Jody Gooch.
Seven others were hurt in Wednesday's blast. Authorities described six injuries as minor and one as moderate.
3 dead in explosion at packaging plant in Beauregard Parish
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — Three people are dead and seven people injured after an explosion at a packaging plant in Beauregard Parish.
Louisiana State Police Sgt. James Anderson says one person who was unaccounted for after the blast at the Packaging Corporation of America facility has been found.
Anderson describes the injuries as moderate to minor. The injured were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
6-year-old boy joins Beauregard Parish SWAT team
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — The Beauregard Parish SWAT team made a 6-year-old boy an honorary team member Tuesday after a surprise visit to his home.
Camdyn Curry's mother, Mel, said that despite her son being diagnosed with autism, he has maintained the dream of one day becoming a police officer and joining a SWAT team.
Beauregard Police Jury Oks $400 raise for jurors
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — Beauregard Parish Police Jury members have voted to give themselves a $400 a month raise.
With no opposition at a public hearing Thursday, KPLC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2ilAM0T ) jurors voted to raise their pay from $1,200 to $1,600 each month.
It's the first raise for the Beauregard Parish Police Jury since 1997.

Renovated 1914 ‘Gothic Jail’ in DeRidder celebrated
DERIDDER, La. (AP) — A historic jail, built in DeRidder in 1914 in the "Collegiate Gothic" design, is open for tours after a renovation.
Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser's office says in a Monday news release that Nungesser joined officials from Beauregard, Allen and Vernon Parish tourism commissions for a ribbon-cutting.
Nungesser's office says the jail was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 but closed the next year.
