All-Star vote process meant to stop Zaza may stop Wade again

Instead, it might keep Dwyane Wade from being one — again. Luka Doncic and Derrick Rose, too.
Rose returns to Chicago, leads T-Wolves over Bulls 119-94
CHICAGO (AP) — For much of his seven seasons with the Bulls, Derrick Rose was a favorite son of Chicago. He was native born and virtually universally beloved.
Things, though, soured towards the end as injuries mounted. The former franchise player was traded in 2016 and serenaded with boos upon his return a few months later.
The 30-year-old is hoping Wednesday night began a new chapter in his relationship with his hometown.

Coach Tom Thibodeau said Teague, who averages 11.6 points and a team-high 8.3 assists per game, didn't sustain a particular injury, but the inflammation built over time.
Teague had been considered a game-time decision. He missed seven games earlier this season with a left knee injury. Derrick Rose will start in Teague's place.

Vintage Derrick Rose savors career-high 50 points in win
During the 2017-18 regular season, Derrick Rose didn't score 50 points in all of January.
He was hurting, always in and out of the lineup, never in rhythm. Those problems, all his years of problems, seemed so long ago Wednesday night, when Rose was better than ever — finishing with a career-high 50 points that lifted the Minnesota Timberwolves over the Utah Jazz 128-125.

Nik Stauskas is officially a member of the Portland Trail Blazers, after signing his one-year, $1.6 million contract.
There was a time when Derrick Rose was the greatest and most thrilling basketball player on the planet.
One part ballplayer, one part circus act with his unmatched explosiveness and gravity-defying acts around the rim, the Chicago native was hair-raising.
Why Derrick Rose, of all people, can tip Timberwolves-Rockets series in Minnesota’s favor
Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau offered a very matter of fact answer when asked if he had seen anything different out of point guard Derrick Rose in Saturdays 121-105 victory over the Rockets.
Nope. Thibodeau said.
Rockets coach Mike DAntoni also didnt feel much like elaborating on Roses turn-back-the-clock performance of 17 points on 16 shot attempts in 21 minutes in Game 3.
Even Derrick Rose was able to laugh at the joke, even though he made it at his own expense.
Rose had just played a huge role in the Timberwolves 121-105 victory over Houston on Saturday night at Target Center, a game that left the Wolves down 2-1 in the playoff series.
Rose came off the bench to score 17 points. He made eight of 16 shots and added two assists and two steals in 21 minutes.
HOUSTON – In case you’ve forgotten these past 14 years, the NBA playoffs are all about adjusting from one game to the next.
After Game 1 of a first-round playoff series against Houston, the question is how much more the Timberwolves will feature All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns than they did Sunday, which wasn’t much.
HOUSTON Doing what needs to be done, Timberwolves reserve guard Derrick Rose played 24 minutes the most he has played since he signed last month in Sundays Game 1 because Jeff Teague and Andrew Wiggins got into foul trouble.
Roses 16 points led a Wolves bench in the 104-101 loss that outscored Houstons 38-15, while Roses former Chicago teammate, Jimmy Butler, went 4-for-11 from the field and scored 13 points.
Who’s responsible for Timberwolves not getting Karl-Anthony Towns more shots vs. Rockets?
In the aftermath of the Wolves 104-101 loss to the Rockets on Sunday, there were a lot of big opinions.
You could trash the Wolves for letting a winnable game slip away against a Rockets team that did not shoot up to its standards. You could be encouraged by the Wolves fight and defensive strategy in a competitive game. You could loudly scream that there are NO MORAL VICTORIES.
HOUSTON Timberwolves guard Derrick Rose knows a little something about league MVP performances when he sees them, and he witnessed one in Sundays 104-101 loss at Houston, the opening game of a first-round NBA playoffs series.
Tom Thibodeau, Timberwolves turned to veterans to help end playoff drought
HOUSTON Reputations sometimes die hard, and so it is for a Timberwolves team that drafted lottery pick after lottery pick during a 14-year playoff drought that finally ends Sunday night in Houston.
But make no mistake about the Wolves even after they chose to go forward with Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins as their foundation for the future.
When he traded away Ricky Rubio and chose free-agent Jeff Teague over Derrick Rose as his point guard, Tom Thibodeau, Timberwolves coach/president of basketball operations, cited Teague’s durability as one big reason why.
So on Sunday with playoff spots and positioning looming very large, Teague didn’t play against Utah because of a sore knee while Rubio returned to the Jazz’s starting lineup after one game away because of a sore hamstring.
Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeaus commitment to a three-guard lineup that featured newly signed Derrick Rose over the past three games affirms he believes the star he once coached in Chicago remains a genuine NBA talent.
Its also an investment aimed to pay off in the playoffs, if a Wolves team now 4-5 without injured All-Star Jimmy Butler reach them for the first time since 2004, of course.
Newly signed guard Derrick Rose made his Timberwolves debut with 6andfrac12; minutes played during Sundays first half against Golden State, and the best you can say about it is he should get better.
Signed Thursday and reunited with his former Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau, Rose made one of his five shots, committed two turnovers, had one offensive rebound and two assists and was a minus-17 in plus-minus rating, if you trust such things.
