The Spurs coach quickly rose to call a timeout 16 seconds into the game to forcefully reinforce that communication is critical to defense.

LAS VEGAS — With point guard Dejoute Murray out as part of a rest program and rookie guard Derrick White still out with a minor left ankle injury, the Spurs entered Tuesday’s summer league game against Portland short on ball-handlers.
Installed in the starting lineup, Olivier Hanlan’s job was simple enough: Don’t overthink things.
Derrick White’s remarkable journey from little-recruited high schooler to bona fide NBA player took another leap forward Thursday, as the Spurs announced their first-round draft pick had formally signed his rookie contract.
The four-year deal could pay White about $8.5 million in total, with the third and fourth seasons at the team’s option, as prescribed by the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Surreal.
That is the only way Derrick White could describe his ascension from a high school player with 1 1/2 college scholarship offers to becoming a first-round pick of the vaunted San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio selected White with the No. 29 pick in the NBA draft on Thursday night.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Faced with a game it could not afford to lose, Colorado came out flat at both ends. The Buffaloes were disjointed on offense, unable to stop Washington State on defense.
Once the second half started, senior Derrick White took over, helping Colorado avoid what could have been an NCAA Tournament-killing loss.
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Derrick White was double-covered and stumbling with his back to the basket in one instant. In the next, he squared up, soared above traffic and let the shot fly.

"It felt good coming off my hands," White said. "I just tried to focus and find the rim."

Washington minus star Fultz in 81-66 loss at Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The Washington Huskies lost fantastic freshman Markelle Fultz prior to tip-off and had no answer for George King in an 81-66 loss to Colorado on Thursday night.
Fultz, projected as a potential top pick in this year's NBA draft, sat out with a sore right knee. It wasn't clear how or when Fultz got hurt. He didn't suit up after watching his team's shoot-around from the bench in sweats once the team's medical staff ruled him out.
White scores 19 to lift Colorado past Stanford 81-74
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Colorado coach Tad Boyle liked the way Bryce Peters looked making his first 3-pointer of the second half so much that he called for another perimeter shot from the freshman guard a few moments later.
