Houston QB Watson surprises mom with home renovation
HOUSTON (AP) — Deshaun Watson's mother spent years encouraging him to chase his dreams.
Now that Watson has achieved one of his biggest goals of reaching the NFL, the Houston Texans quarterback is giving back to her by renovating the home he grew up in.
"She is my rock, my hero," Watson said. "She always was there giving 100 percent each and every day to try to be the best she can be to help her kids be successful."
Offenses took a holiday on wild-card weekend
CHICAGO (AP) — Maybe it was the absence of all those high-powered offenses on byes.
Perhaps it was the jitters for some younger teams, particularly their quarterbacks: Deshaun Watson, Mitchell Trubisky and Lamar Jackson.
Or maybe defense actually still has a place in the NFL, especially in the playoffs.
Browns interview Colts’ Eberflus after wild-card playoff win
CLEVELAND (AP) — Matt Eberflus has a past with the Browns. Maybe he'll have a future as well.
One day after his Indianapolis defense held quarterback Deshaun Watson and Houston's offense to just seven points in an AFC wild-card win, Eberflus became the sixth candidate to interview for Cleveland's open coaching job.
The Colts' dominant performance helped Eberflus boost a resume that already included a two-year stint (2009-10) coaching the Browns linebackers on Eric Mangini's staff.
Texans look to bright future with Watson after playoff exit
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston's impressive turnaround after a 0-3 start ended in disappointment with a loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the wild-card round.
Still, the Texans remain optimistic about their future because they're confident they've finally found their franchise quarterback in Deshaun Watson after years of misfires at the position.
Texans struggle to protect Watson in 21-7 loss to Colts
HOUSTON (AP) — Deshaun Watson was sacked more than any other quarterback during the regular season.
Houston's struggles to protect him continued in the wild-card game on Saturday and it contributed to a 21-7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Watson, who was sacked 62 times in the regular season, was sacked three times and hit eight more times in a disappointing playoff debut. He finished with 235 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception.
Healthy Watt and Watson lead Texans into playoffs
HOUSTON (AP) — Last year at this time, Houston's J.J. Watt and Deshaun Watson were rehabbing after serious injuries cut both of their seasons short and contributed to the Texans' terrible 4-12 season.
Healthy and thriving this season, the stars lead the AFC South champion Texans into Saturday's wild-card game against Indianapolis.
"We talked about times like this when we were in the training room, what we wanted to accomplish and what we were working toward," Watt said.
Texans clinch AFC South title with 20-3 win over Jaguars
HOUSTON (AP) — After the Houston Texans fell to 0-3 with a loss at home to the New York Giants on Sept. 23, they appeared to be headed for a second straight losing season.
Instead, the Texans (11-5) won their next nine games and 11 of their last 13, capped by Sunday's 20-3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, to clinch the AFC South title.
Texans lose to Eagles 32-30, lose control of No. 2 seed
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Deshaun Watson made one big play after another to rally the Houston Texans back from a 13-point deficit to take the lead only to watch the defense let it slip away.
The Texans missed an opportunity to clinch the AFC South and lost control of the No. 2 seed when Jake Elliott kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired to give the Philadelphia Eagles a 32-30 victory on Sunday.
Watson leads Texans to 29-22 comeback win over Darnold, Jets
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The Houston Texans were trailing late and facing a second straight loss after a nine-game winning streak.
Deshaun Watson wasn't having it.
The cool-headed, playmaking quarterback threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins with 2:15 left, lifting the Texans to a 29-22 victory over Sam Darnold and the New York Jets on Saturday night.
Deshaun Watston, Texans rally to beat Jets 29-22
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Deshaun Watson threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins with 2:15 left, lifting the Houston Texans to a 29-22 comeback victory over Sam Darnold and the New York Jets on Saturday night.
After Darnold and Jets took their first lead of the game on Elijah McGuire's 2-yard touchdown run, Watson and the Texans (10-4) answered right back.
Texans take on Jets with sights set on starting new streak
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — With each victory, the Houston Texans increasingly established themselves as a team to beat in the AFC.
Their nine-game winning streak set a franchise record and also raised expectations by the week. So, perhaps their 24-21 loss to Indianapolis last Sunday could, in some way, alleviate some building tension down the stretch.

Texans look for 10th straight win as they host Colts
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans are in a much different place now than the first time they faced the Indianapolis Colts this season when they were 0-3 and desperate for a win.
Ka'imi Fairbairn made a field goal as time expired in overtime to lead the Texans to a 37-34 victory in that game and they haven't lost since, reeling off a franchise-record nine straight wins entering Sunday's rematch.
Big issue: Browns concerned with Newton’s size vs. Panthers
CLEVELAND (AP) — During a meeting this week with his defense, Browns interim coach Gregg Williams used star end Myles Garrett as a model.
And a warning.
A 6-foot-4, 270-pound mass of chiseled muscle, power and speed, Garrett cuts an imposing figure. He's a physical specimen, the kind of athlete that stands out even in a room full of elite humans.
Oh, and he happens to be about the same size as Carolina quarterback Cam Newton.
Texans get 9th straight win, 29-13, win over Browns
HOUSTON (AP) — After the Houston Texans extended their franchise record with a ninth straight win on Sunday, J.J. Watt was asked to reflect on how far the team has come in the past year.
"I was on the couch a year ago so this is a lot better," said Watt, who missed the last 11 games of Houston's 4-12 2017 season with a broken leg. "I was in a lot of pain. So it's good for us to be winning ... this is what it's supposed to feel like. Honestly this is how you dream it up."

Texans look to build on big rushing performance
HOUSTON (AP) — The Texans set a team record by running for 281 yards in beating Tennessee.
Now they will try to keep their running game going against Cleveland when they attempt to extend their franchise-record winning streak to nine games.
Houston's big rushing performance came thanks in large part to the performance of Lamar Miller, who ran for a season-high 162 yards. His night was highlighted by a franchise-long 97-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Texans beat Titans 34-17 for team-record 8th straight win
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans wanted to honor their late owner and founder Robert "Bob" McNair, who died last week at age 81.
They knew the perfect way to do that Monday night was to keep their winning streak going.
Deshaun Watson threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Texans set a franchise record with their eighth straight victory, 34-17 over the Tennessee Titans.
Texans face Titans, go for franchise-record 8th straight win
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans have matched a franchise record for most consecutive wins and are the first team since the 1925 New York Giants to win seven straight games after opening a season 0-3.
Despite this impressive streak, they're far from satisfied and know they'll have to continue to improve to get their eighth win in a row when they host the Tennessee Titans on Monday night.
Houston’s unsung rookie class contributing to team’s success
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans didn't pick until the third round in this year's draft.
That hasn't stopped them from getting plenty of contributions from their unsung rookies, led by Justin Reid, a third-round pick whose 101-yard interception return for a TD helped Houston extend its winning streak to seven games last week.
Texans beat Redskins 23-21 to extend winning streak to 7
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Justin Reid intercepted the ball in the end zone and saw nothing but green grass in front of him.
"I saw the daylight and I have to hit it," Reid said. "I wasn't going to let anyone stop me."
Red-hot Texans visit Redskins in meeting of division leaders
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Jay Gruden occasionally has to remind people his team is in 6-3 and in first place.
"That's a heck of deal after nine games," the Washington Redskins' coach said. "But I'm also excited with the fact that we have not played our best yet, and I think the best is yet to come."
The Latest: Saints hand previously unbeaten Rams 1st loss
The Latest on Week 9 in the NFL (all times EST):
The Los Angeles Rams' undefeated run is over.
Drew Brees threw four touchdown passes and Michael Thomas had 12 receptions for 211 yards and a score in a 45-35 win for the New Orleans Saints over the previously unbeaten Rams.
New Orleans led 35-14 late in the second quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, the Rams rallied to tie it with 21 straight points.

Miami’s defense struggles in loss to Texans
HOUSTON (AP) — Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase couldn't hide his irritation with the team's defense after a 42-23 loss to the Houston Texans on Thursday night.
"We've got to get better fast," he said.
The Dolphins allowed a season high in points on a night Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson matched a career best with five touchdown passes, including ones of 73 and 49 yards.
Watson throws 5 TDs as Texans beat Dolphins 42-23
HOUSTON (AP) — This is the Deshaun Watson the Houston Texans have been waiting for all season.
Watson matched his career high with five touchdown passes to lead the Texans to their fifth straight victory, 42-23 over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night.
The second-year quarterback has played well at times this year but hadn't had a breakout game while dealing with rib and lung injuries over the past few weeks.
Miami’s Osweiler faces team that let him go in Texans
HOUSTON (AP) — When the Texans host the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night it will be a matchup of Houston's quarterback of the future in Deshaun Watson and one of the many failed quarterbacks of the team's past in Brock Osweiler.
It will be Osweiler's third straight start in place of Ryan Tannehill, who is out with a shoulder injury.
Watson plays through injury, Texans beat reeling Jags 20-7
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Deshaun Watson made the 800-mile trip to Jacksonville on a private bus.
He slept, studied film, played games and watched television — all because the Houston Texans were concerned about how air pressure from flying would affect his bruised lung and injured ribs.
Given how little Watson got hit Sunday, he might join teammates for the flight back.
Texans look to improve offense, protect Watson better
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans have turned things around after opening the season 0-3, winning three straight games to move out of the AFC South basement.
There's still plenty of work to do though as their offense has struggled to move the ball and protect quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Houston beat the Buffalo Bills 20-13 on Sunday, but needed an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to do it as they managed just one touchdown on offense for the second straight week.
Watson hit 19 times as Texans beat Bills 20-13
HOUSTON (AP) — Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans got their third straight win on Sunday.
But it came with a price as the already-banged up quarterback took 19 more hits in the 20-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills.
Watson was sacked seven times and took 12 other hits from the Bills. The second-year player, questionable this week with a chest injury, was slow to get up several times and didn't seem to be moving as well as he normally does.
Joseph’s INT return for TD lifts Texans over Bills 20-13
HOUSTON (AP) — On a day Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson wasn't at his best, the defense helped the Texans pull out another win.
Johnathan Joseph's 28-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:23 remaining lifted the Texans to their third straight victory, a 20-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
The Texans trailed by three when Phillip Gaines was called pass interference on Will Fuller in the end zone with 2 minutes remaining, moving the Texans 41 yards to the 1-yard line.
Texans try to limit Watson’s hits as they prepare for Bills
HOUSTON (AP) — Everyone agrees that Deshaun Watson took far too many hits last week against the Dallas Cowboys.
That doesn't mean Houston's quarterback is going to change the way he plays on Sunday when the Texans (2-3) host the Buffalo Bills (2-3).
Many of those hits against Dallas came on runs when he simply refused to slide, something that he won't apologize for.
Watson helps Texans to 19-16 win over Cowboys in overtime
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson has a knack for making big plays, whether it's with his arm or his feet.
But after the quarterback took a few too many unnecessary hits in a 19-16 overtime win against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night, his teammates wondered if maybe he should dial things back a bit.
Fairbairn’s FG in OT lifts Texans over Cowboys 19-16
HOUSTON (AP) — When DeAndre Hopkins had a chance to make a play in overtime on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, Houston's star receiver was intent on redeeming himself after losing a rare fumble in the third quarter.
He did that with a spectacular 49-yard catch and run that got the Texans in scoring range, and Ka'imi Fairbairn kicked a 36-yard field goal to lift the Texans to a 19-16 win.
Texans end losing streak in OT after Vinatieri sets record
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ka'imi Fairbairn took advantage of his final chance Sunday.
The third-year kicker missed a 59-yarder to win the game at the end of regulation, then a 37-yarder near the end of overtime. But the Indianapolis Colts had called timeout just before that one, and Fairbairn finally made the decisive kick as time expired to help Houston snap the league's longest losing streak with a 37-34 victory at Indianapolis.
Texans seeking 1st win against improved Colts’ defense
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson faces a different challenge Sunday.
Yes, he's up against a young defense that is pressuring quarterbacks, forcing turnovers and improving by the week. Sure, he hopes to end the league's longest losing streak by giving the winless Texans their first victory since November.
While Watson won a lot in college and even as an NFL rookie, now he must figure out a solution to the Texans' woes.
Texans WR Will Fuller blossoming with Deshaun Watson
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans receiver Will Fuller has played in six games where Deshaun Watson started at quarterback.
He has had a receiving touchdown in all six of those games.
Fuller and Watson have connected for nine touchdowns in limited action on the field together.
"Just practicing hard and getting our rhythm down in practice," Fuller said of his connection with Watson before Thursday's practice. "I think that's the biggest key — just the way we practice."
Focus on roughing the passer giving NFL a black eye
The NFL is getting roughed up over its amplified enforcement of roughing-the-passer penalties that has generated head-scratching calls — and a season-ending injury to a defender trying to comply with the league's mandate not to land fully on the quarterback.
In the offseason, NFL owners asked the league's competition committee to better protect their prized quarterbacks after Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr broke Packers star Aaron Rodgers' collarbone in 2017.
Texans visit Colts desperate for 1st win
HOUSTON (AP) — A season so promising just a few short weeks ago is on the verge of falling apart for the Houston Texans.
One of only three winless teams in the NFL, the Texans are desperate to get a victory on Sunday against the Colts and try to salvage their season.
"We have to win this game," safety Tyrann Mathieu said. "We just have to win."
Winless Texans search for ways to turn things around
HOUSTON (AP) — With J.J. Watt and Deshaun Watson healthy and back on the field for the Houston Texans, expectations were high they'd turn things around after last year's dreadful season.
Instead, Sunday's 27-22 loss to the New York Giants put them into an 0-3 hole and had coaches and players searching for answers.
"We've got to figure something out," Watt said. "I told the guys in there: 'We're at the bottom. You've got to find a way to claw your way out of the bottom.'"
School head resigns over comment about black quarterbacks
HOUSTON (AP) — A white Texas school superintendent who posted online that "You can't count on a black quarterback" in reference to Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has resigned.
In a letter Saturday to the Onalaska Independent School District board, Lynn Redden says his comment posted earlier in the week on the Houston Chronicle's Facebook page was "wrong and inappropriate."
Webb will be targeted replacing Eli Apple at cornerback
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants cornerback B.W. Webb is going to be targeted by the Houston Texans this weekend.
It's a given.
Starting cornerback Eli Apple is going to miss the game with a hamstring injury and Webb seemingly is going to replace him in the starting lineup. That gives Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson two options. Throw at Pro Bowl cornerback Janoris Jenkins or go after Webb, a five-year veteran who didn't play a down last season in limited time with Cleveland.
Texans blast educator for ‘black QB’ comment about Watson
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans fired back Wednesday at an East Texas school superintendent who wrote: "You can't count on a black quarterback," in the comment section of an online news article where he was criticizing quarterback Deshaun Watson.
