CHICAGO (AP) — Washington Capitals coach Todd Reirden wanted to show his support for Devante Smith-Pelly.
So he put him on the ice for the opening face-off.
Smith-Pelly got the start Sunday in his first game in Chicago since the black winger heard chants of "basketball, basketball, basketball" while he was sitting in the penalty box during the third period of a 7-1 loss last February. The fans were promptly ejected, and then banned from Chicago's home games.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two losses for Washington played a role in another win for surging Capitals.
John Carlson scored a tiebreaking goal in the second period, and Washington beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 on Tuesday night for its eighth victory in 10 games.
The Capitals were coming off a 3-1 loss in New Jersey on Monday. They also lost 6-2 at Colorado last month.

Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon was already talking about getting aggressive in the free agent market.
Now he has some extra room to do that.
Florida was one of several teams to buy out a player in the last chance this offseason, clearing salary-cap space for the start of free agency Saturday.
The Devils certainly don't want to be a top-heavy team in terms of goal production. So getting a goal from a defenseman for the second straight game and also having versatile Devante Smith-Pelly chip in with his first goal of the season was seen as a good sign.
