Davis Cup: Spain wins doubles to lead Britain 2-1
MARBELLA, Spain (AP) — Spain led Britain 2-1 in the Davis Cup World Group after Pablo Carreno-Busta and Feliciano Lopez beat Dominic Inglot and Jamie Murray 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in doubles on Saturday.
The Spanish pair forced 35 errors to win the match in just under 2 1/2 hours on the outdoor clay at Club de Tenis Puente Romano.
The teams, missing respective stars Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, split Friday's singles.
Serbia & France set up Davis Cup semifinal
Serbia and France won their Davis Cup quarterfinals on Saturday to set up their first match since the 2010 final.
France will host the semifinal in September, and will hope leading stars Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils, and Richard Gasquet are fit and available to face Novak Djokovic and Co, who beat them in the 2010 final 3-2 in Belgrade.
ROUEN, France (AP) — France advanced to the Davis Cup semifinals after veterans Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut won a tight doubles to beat Britain 3-0 on Saturday.
Benneteau and Mahut edged Dominic Inglot and Jamie Murray 7-6 (7), 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.
France will host Serbia in September. They have not met since the 2010 final, which Serbia won 3-2 at home.
Zverev stuns Wawrinka for St. Petersburg title
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Promising German 19-year-old Alexander Zverev won his first tour title Sunday, beating U.S. Open champion Stan Wawrinka in a tight battle in the St. Petersburg Open final.
Zverev took the first set before Wawrinka responded to draw level. The German was a break down in the decider, but fought back to win 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
LONDON (AP) — Wimbledon champion Andy Murray says "it's looking unlikely" that he will play for Britain in its Davis Cup quarterfinal against Serbia this week.
At a news conference Monday at the All England Club, Murray says he plans to give Davis Cup captain Leon Smith a final answer later in the day.
Murray says the two spoke at the champion's dinner Sunday night.
