Ex-college hockey coach’s court-ordered award now $4.2M
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — A discrimination and retaliation award is growing for a former women's hockey coach who sued the University of Minnesota Duluth.
A federal judge granted a motion Wednesday to award Shannon Miller an additional $460,000 in pay and future benefits. That brings the total award to the former coach to about $4.2 million.

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) _ Allete Inc. (ALE) on Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $61.1 million.
The Duluth, Minnesota-based company said it had net income of $1.18 per share.
The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.15 per share.
The power company owner posted revenue of $448.3 million in the period.

4 charged in oil pipeline shutdown attempt
GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) — Prosecutors in northern Minnesota have charged four protesters who allegedly tried to shut down an Enbridge oil pipeline, but brought the wrong tool.
Itasca County Attorney Matti Adam says charges were filed Wednesday against 40-year-old Brenna Cussen Anglada of Cuba City, Wisconsin; 32-year-old Daniel Taner Yildirim of Viroqua, Wisconsin; 62-year-old Michele Anne Naar and 26-year-old Allyson Elyse Polman, both of Duluth, Minnesota.
Feds OK St. Louis County disaster declaration due to floods
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — President Donald Trump has approved a disaster declaration for damaging waves and flooding in St. Louis County last fall.
Then-Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton wrote to Trump late last year, requesting the declaration for storm damage in October.
Dayton's successor, Gov. Tim Walz, announced the major disaster declaration Tuesday.
Doctor, 6 other men arrested in sex solicitation sting
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — A Grand Rapids physician is among seven men arrested and suspected of soliciting a minor for sex.
Authorities conducted an undercover sting operation and placed ads on various sites know for soliciting sex. Prosecutors say Dr. Ogechukwu Adekweh was among those who responded to an ad and was arrested when he arrived to meet a juvenile female at a Duluth hotel.

Officials nix boundary waters reservations because of glitch
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Federal officials say they are starting over on accepting reservation for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of northeastern Minnesota because of technical issues.
Forest Service officials say only a small number of people were able to receive access to apply for permits, so officials are cancelling reservations that have been processed and are issuing refunds.

Tobacco purchase age is now 21 in Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — You will soon have to be 21 to buy tobacco products in Duluth.
The City Council voted 6-1 Monday evening in favor of an ordinance that sets the minimum age for purchase at 21, instead of 18.
Councilor Em Westerlund co-sponsored the local law. Westerlund says it only makes sense for the city to address the growing risk e-cigarettes pose to young people, predisposing them to a lifetime of addiction. The ordinance goes into effect in 120 days.

2 Duluth men convicted of trafficking teenage girl for sex
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Two Duluth men have been convicted in federal court of trafficking a 15-year-old girl for sex.
A jury in Duluth found 44-year-old Amos Kiprop Koech guilty Tuesday of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor and sex trafficking of a minor. Koech's alleged co-conspirator, 33-year-old Andre Mathis Jr., pleaded guilty to sex trafficking of a minor four days before trial.
Officer shot and wounded in Duluth released
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Police say the Duluth officer shot and wounded in a fatal domestic assault standoff has been released from the hospital.
Authorities say Officer Aaron Haller was treated at the hospital and released after he was hit by gunfire that killed his K-9 partner, Haas. The man involved in the standoff who fire the gunshots was later found dead in the residence Sunday evening.
Field set for Feb. 5 Minnesota Senate special election
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The field is set for what's likely to be a hard-fought special election for a state Senate seat in eastern Minnesota next month.
The seat became open when Democrat Tony Lourey was named human services commissioner. That raised the Senate GOP's majority to two seats, which Democrats hope to cut back to one in the Feb. 5 election.

Life sentence given for shooting death of Duluth student
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — The fourth of five defendants accused of participating in the fatal shooting of a University of Minnesota-Duluth student in 2017 has been sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility in 30 years.
Twenty-three-year-old Deandre Davenport maintained his innocence at his sentencing hearing Monday, telling the judge he didn't have anything to do with the death of William Grahek.

Man who claimed to have a gun arrested on Duluth campus
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Police arrested a man who said he had a gun and was making suicidal threats at the University of Minnesota's Duluth campus.
Officials issued a campus alert Tuesday night after an acquaintance of the man called 911. Local law enforcement officers searched and found the man in the university's planetarium. Authorities say no gun was found. He was taken to a hospital and then to the St. Louis County Jail.
Man rescued after being stranded in ravine in Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Police in Duluth say a man has been rescued after being stranded for days in a remote area near the Superior Hiking Trail.
Officials were called Monday afternoon to an area near the trail and the Lake Superior Zoo about a person needing medical assistance.
Fire crews rescued the 36-year-old man from the ravine. Police believe he may have been there for three to four days.
Assistant Fire Chief Clinton Reff says the victim has hypothermia, but is in stable condition.
