Rudock among Lions’ cuts as Detroit trims roster to 53
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have cut quarterback Jake Rudock, paving the way for veteran Matt Cassel to move forward as Matthew Stafford's backup.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have desperately tried to improve what has been a weakness, signing and drafting players to improve their running game.
Detroit ranked last in the NFL last season in rushing offense and has been among the league's worst on the ground offensively in recent seasons.
Lions general manager Bob Quinn has made it a priority to fix the problem.
Allen Park — Over the next several days, leading up to the NFL Draft, we'll take a position-by-position look at the Detroit Lions' roster situation and evaluate how the team might address these positions during the event. Today: Running back
■ Current roster: Ameer Abdullah, LeGarrette Blount, Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner, Dwayne Washington, Tion Green
The Lions appear to have the same on-field needs this offseason as the last. Only this time they're also looking for a head coach, though they appear to have someone in mind.
And, while general manager Bob Quinn and the Lions tried to upgrade the offensive line through free agency, the resulting running game remained stuck in the mud. It's one reason why ESPN downgraded the Lions' 2107 offseason from a B-minus to a C-plus in regrading every team's offseason Tuesday (pay site).
Detroit – Detroit Lions rookie tight end Michael Roberts is unexpectedly inactive for the team's season finale against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
Roberts had appeared in all 15 games this season and had played 45 offensive snaps the past two weeks. It's unclear whether the move was disciplinary in nature or the fourth-round pick out of Toledo simply woke up under the weather with a virus that had touched the Lions locker room over the weekend.
Rick Wagner joins T.J. Lang, Travis Swanson on Lions sideline today
Cincinnati – The Detroit Lions will be missing the entire right side of their starting offensive line for Sunday's matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Along with center Travis Swanson, who was ruled out Friday with a concussion, and guard T.J. Lang, who was listed as doubtful with a foot injury, right tackle Rick Wagner will remain sidelined for the third consecutive week with a sprain ankle.
Lions offensive guard T.J. Lang to start vs. Bears
Detroit – The Lions announced they would be down two starting offensive lineman earlier in the week, but at least it's not three. Guard T.J. Lang, who had been listed as questionable with a foot injury, is active and will start against the Chicago Bears.
Defensive end Ziggy Ansah (ankle), who was the other starter listed as questionable, is also active.
Tampa, Fla. — Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who entered the day questionable with a hand injury, will make his 109th consecutive start on Sunday against the Buccaneers.
Stafford practiced on a limited basis throughout the week after having his hand accidentally stepped on by Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs last Sunday.
Baltimore — The Detroit Lions will be without starting running back Ameer Abdullah against the Baltimore Ravens. He had been listed as questionable for the game, with a neck injury, on Friday.
Abdullah is the team's leading rusher with 505 yards on 150 carries. Theo Riddick is expected to take over the bulk of the workload. He's been successful since the team's bye, averaging 4.5 yards per carry the past five games.
Ziggy Ansah active, Dwight Freeney is not for Lions
Detroit – Ziggy Ansah is active for Thursday's Thanksgiving matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Newly acquired defensive end Dwight Freeney is not.
Claimed off waivers Wednesday afternoon, it was determined the turnaround was too short for the 16-year veteran to contribute. Additionally, Freeney is also coming off short rest, having played for the Seattle Seahawks Monday night.
Lions DE Ansah active, Vikings OT Remmers inactive
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Lions defensive end Ezekiel Ansah is active after missing two games with a back injury.
Ansah had been listed as questionable for Thursday's game against Minnesota.
Vikings right tackle Mike Remmers is inactive. He had been questionable because of a concussion. Rashod Hill is starting at right tackle.
Allen Park — Ziggy Ansah is questionable for Thursday's game against the Minnesota Vikings, while return man Jamal Agnew and running back Dwayne Washington have been ruled out.
Ansah, who missed the past two weeks with a back injury, participated in both days of practice this week. In eight games, he's recorded 18 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble.
In the two weeks Ansah was out, the Lions struggled to stop the run. The Browns and Bears both topped 200 yards in those games.
Allen Park — Ziggy Ansah returned to practice for the Detroit Lions on Tuesday, putting the former Pro Bowl defensive end in line to return for Thursday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Ansah missed the past two games with a back injury.
Sitting out for the Lions were running back Dwayne Washington (hip) and return man Jamal Agnew.
Allen Park — There were no real surprises with the Detroit Lions' inactive list for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.
Sitting out are defensive end Ziggy Ansah, linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, wide receiver Jace Billingsley, guards Emmett Cleary and Don Barclay and running backs Dwayne Washington and Tion Green.
Both Ansah (back) and Washington (hip) were ruled out on Friday. Reeves-Maybin (ankle) was listed as questionable.
Lions DE Ansah ruled out against Bears with back injury
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have ruled out defensive end Ezekiel Ansah against the Chicago Bears because of a back injury.
Detroit determined Ansah and running back Dwayne Washington would be inactive at Chicago after they didn't practice for a third straight day. Ansah also missed the previous game, a win over Cleveland. Washington is out with a hip injury.
Offensive guard T.J. Lang is expected to play after missing the Browns game with a concussion.
Ziggy Ansah, Dwayne Washington ruled out vs. Bears
Allen Park — After sitting out a sixth consecutive practice, Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah has been ruled out against the Chicago Bears. It's the second straight game a back injury will sideline the former Pro Bowl pass rusher.
The team also ruled out running back Dwayne Washington, who suffered a hip injury last week. Linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin (ankle) and safety Don Carey (knee) are questionable.
Allen Park — With Dwayne Washington sidelined with a hip injury, the Lions will likely go back to Zach Zenner as the third running back in the rotation this week against the Chicago Bears. But what about Tion Green?
The undrafted rookie has yet to be active for a regular season game this season, but offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter expressed confidence in Green's ability to get the job done if needed.
Detroit’s Lang able to practice; Lions acquire Edebali
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit offensive lineman T.J. Lang participated fully in practice Wednesday after missing last weekend's game against Cleveland because of a concussion.
Allen Park — Detroit Lions guard T.J. Lang returned to practice on Wednesday, giving the team hopes of their starting five offensive linemen sharing the field for the first time this season Sunday against the Chicago Bears.
Lang missed last week's game with a concussion. He suffered the injury in the team's victory over Green Bay on Nov. 6, but symptoms didn't manifest until Wednesday's practice last week.
Lions get close but can’t reach end zone against Steelers
DETROIT (AP) — No matter what the Detroit Lions did near the goal line, it turned out badly.
Detroit's 20-15 loss Sunday night included three crucial second-half possessions by the Lions inside the Pittsburgh 10-yard line. On two of them, Detroit failed to score at all, and on one, the Lions settled for a field goal.
"They wanted to stop us more than we wanted to get in," Lions receiver Golden Tate said.
Detroit – Lions wide Golden Tate is active for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, bucking early reports he would have to miss time with the shoulder injury he suffered against the New Orleans Saints two weeks ago.
Davis practices for Lions after missing game with concussion
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Rookie linebacker Jarrad Davis was on the practice field Wednesday for the Detroit Lions after missing their loss to Atlanta last weekend because of a concussion.
The Lions listed Davis, their first-round draft pick, as limited in practice. Also limited Wednesday were safety Glover Quin, cornerback Jamal Agnew, wide receiver Kenny Golladay, center Travis Swanson, safety Tavon Wilson and defensive end Anthony Zettel.

Joique Bell will graduate, may play for Lions this weekend
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Joique Bell could be headed for one big weekend.
Bell picks up his master's degree in sports administration at Wayne State University on Saturday. The next day, he could make his season debut with the Detroit Lions in his return after they cut him in February.
"It's funny that my first week back here is the same week that I graduate," he said Wednesday.
Desperate for depth in its banged-up backfield, Detroit brought Bell back by signing him Tuesday.
Washington and Rudock shine in Lions’ 31-0 win over Bills
DETROIT (AP) — Dwayne Washington took a handoff to the left and with a burst of speed, the rookie running back got to the outside and up the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown to likely seal his chances of earning a spot on Detroit's opening-day roster.
Jake Rudock probably boosted his chances, too, with three touchdown passes to help the Lions close the preseason with a 31-0 win over Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.
