► 2:45: GM Ken Holland on returning to the playoffs
Detroit — Nobody in the Red Wings dressing room wanted to be there Tuesday. Not like this, anyway. Not like last year, when the tradition-rich franchise's 25-year playoff streak ended and a new reality finally started to dawn.
But better now than later, they agree. And better late than never, right?
"Eventually, there's no other way than to start to rebuild," captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "And we're right in the middle of it."
Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill has been named head coach of the 2018 U.S. men's national team, it was announced Monday. The team will compete in the IIHF world championships May 4-20 in Denmark.
This is the second consecutive year Blashill will head the U.S. national team. Last year, Blashill led the Americans to a fifth-place finish in the world championships in Germany and France, on a team that included Dylan Larkin and Jimmy Howard.
Detroit – Say what you will about Jeff Blashill, he is tough.
Whether it is having grown up the son of a Detroit police officer, enduring all the goals against and disappointment of his years striving to be a professional goalie, the fortitude of repeatedly uprooting his family in search of good coaching positions around the country or another reason, Blashill's molded constitution gives him even keel.
Detroit – The regular season started with a victory and ended with a defeat.
Befitting of this season, for the most part. It was all the stuff in the middle that turned into a disappointing season for the Red Wings.
BOX SCORE: Islanders 4, Red Wings 3, OT
John Tavares scored at 3 minutes, 16 seconds of overtime, giving the New York Islanders a 4-3 victory Saturday.
Henrik Zetterberg, Justin Abdelkader (power play) and Dylan Larkin scored goals and goalie Jared Coreau stopped 36 shots.
Detroit — The coaches decided to make the last practice of the season optional Friday.
Dylan Larkin took the ice, and he and Red Wings practice goalie Josh Block were late, and, dripping perspiration, coming back into the room.
Larkin gave him a stick tap on the back of his right leg pad.
The developing young player, who is the Red Wings' scoring leader, got his shooting repetitions in for the day.
Detroit — It was a fair question — one that Dylan Larkin hadn't even considered, but given the circumstances was worthy of thinking over.
Michigan was going to play for the NCAA basketball championship Monday night.
Were the Red Wings going to be able to watch it?
"I hope they have it on television. I don't know if they will allow that in Columbus," Larkin said after Monday's practice, as the Red Wings prepared to visit the hometown of the Buckeyes for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jackets.
Detroit — As they have in the past several seasons, the Red Wings are rallying late in their schedule.
Some fans urge them to "tank," hoping to improve their limited odds in the lottery before the NHL Entry Draft, and landing Rasmus Dahlin, an outstanding offensive defenseman from Sweden who is universally acclaimed as the certain first-round pick.
To a man, at least publicly, the Wings will have none of it.
Detroit – With two more goals from players they hope are future stars, the Red Wings defeated the Senators 2-0 in a matinee game at a two-thirds full Little Caesars Arena Saturday for a rare, third consecutive win.
Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou scored the goals for the Red Wings.
Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots for a shutout and his 22nd win of the season.
